Re: The election irregularities as presented thus far
Ossoff's lead is about 17,000 votes (0.4%)with the biggest chunk remaining about 18,000 more mail-in votes in DeKalb County. Earlier batches of mail-ins have gone 85-90% for Ossoff/Warnock, so there's a good chance his lead could be 25,000 or more before the election is over. Biden won the general election (with a 10% bigger turnout) by just under 12,000 votes. Warnock's lead is about 54,000 votes (1.2%).
In November, Perdue finished 88,000 votes ahead of Ossoff (a Libertarian candidate got the rest of the votes), so there will be a 100,000+ vote turnaround in this election in two months in a state that Democrats don't do well in runoffs. In the last Senate runoff in 2008, Saxby Chambliss finished 3% ahead of his Democratic opponent in the general election and 15% ahead in the runoff election a month later.
By the way, more people voted in this runoff than in either the 2016 or 2018 general elections. Over 100,000 people voted in this election who did not vote in November (some because they just turned 18).

Re: The election irregularities as presented thus far
David Perdue has conceded the election and issued a statement to the press congratulating Jon Ossoff. He apparently has not contacted Ossoff personally to congratulate him. Kelly Loeffler issued a similar statement yesterday. I'm not sure what either of them might otherwise have done, but the riots Wednesday definitely took some of the wind out the sails for any legal challenges to the elections.
Before 2020, this sort of statement would be routine in politics, but you can never tell now what a Republican election loser is going to do.

Re: The election irregularities as presented thus far
Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, who is probably the most liberal Republican Senator, called on Trump to resign today. That's not overly surprising, but what she said next was. She said that if the Republicans didn't do enough to distance themselves from Trump, she would have to reconsider whether she had a future with the Republican Party. She could pull a Jim Jeffords, the Vermont Senator who switched from Republican to Independent in 2001 and caucused with the Democrats. That gave the Democrats control of the Senate in 2001 and 2002.
I had personally felt that Murkowski might do this if she could duplicate Jeffords and switch control, but the Dems already have this. She would still be able to get some cushy perks if she does, like a choice committee chairmanship. And it would mean that Schumer would only need to convince her or Joe Manchin to back a proposal instead of just Manchin.
Her choice is easier because Alaska changed its voting laws this year. There is now a top-four all-party primary for state and federal elections, followed by a ranked choice general election. Her chances of winning as a popular independent in this scenario would be very good (she's up for re-election in 2022). She was defeated as a Republican in an earlier Senate primary in 2010 and then ran and won in the general election as a write-in candidate

In addition to the Dominion lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani, another voting technology company, Smartmatic, has filed a $2.7 billion defamation suit against Fox News, Lou Dobbs, Maria Bartiromo, Jeanine Pirro, Rudy Giuliani, and SIdney Powell based on claims of election fraud involving their technology. Smartmatic developed the software used by Dominion in its voting machines.

In completely non-surprising news, the Senate voted to acquit Trump. Seven Republicans (Burr, Cassidy, Collins, Murkowski, Romney, Sasse, Toomey) and all 50 Democrats and Independents voted to convict. Burr and Toomey have already announced that they are retiring in 2022.

Sorta kinda not really. McConnell pretty much said that this is a matter for the criminal justice system to handle, so I expect lots more investigations in addition to the ones going on in New York and Georgia over Donny's criminal conduct. He just wants Democratic prosecutors to do the work for him so he can still make nice with Donny's voters. --Bob

I suspect that there may be federal investigations as well once Merrick Garland is in place as AG. If they can get Trump involved in conspiracy charges, that would be a federal matter. And the way you do that is to start with the low level people and get them to flip.Bob78164 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 3:09 pmSorta kinda not really. By the way, the Georgia investigation is in the hands of the Fulton County District Attorney who is very interested in pursuing this matter.

Speaking for myself, I'm pretty disenchanted with our legal process. But, it is what it is. No real surprises there.

The main legal defense during the impeachment trial was the you couldn't convict him since he's no longer the sitting president.
I suspect that the legal defense in criminal court will be that impeachment and conviction are the only legal remedies for a sitting president who does bad things during his time as president.

Mitch is trying to walk both sides of the fence. He just wants his party back. He was able to get the 45th to turn the judiciary red for him and now wants to be in control again. Dominion has now filed a $1.3 lawsuit against MyPillow and its CEO Mike Lindell, for defamation. As part of its complaint, Dominion alleges that the company is using its defamatory statements as a promotional tool to sell pillows, citing promotional codes on the company's website offering discounts for pillows if people type in coupon codes like "FIGHTFORTRUMP" and "QANON."silverscreenselect wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 1:48 pmIn addition to the Dominion lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani, another voting technology company, Smartmatic, has filed a $2.7 billion defamation suit against Fox News, Lou Dobbs, Maria Bartiromo, Jeanine Pirro, Rudy Giuliani, and SIdney Powell based on claims of election fraud involving their technology. In other legal news today, the US Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from the Pennsylvania Supreme Court that allowed the counting of mail-in votes received three days after the election (this would not have affected Biden's win in the state).
And the US Supreme Court today finally rejected Trump's appeal to prevent the release of his income tax returns to New York State prosecutors. The returns may be used in grand jury proceedings, but will not be made public at this time.

This is what passes for leadership in the Republican party nowadays.Ron Johnson 3/11/21 wrote:Even though those thousands of people that were marching to the Capitol were trying to pressure people like me to vote the way they wanted me to vote, I knew those were people that love this country, that truly respect law enforcement, would never do anything to break the law, and so I wasn't concerned. Now, had the tables been turned ... and President Trump won the election and those were tens of thousands of Black Lives Matter and Antifa protesters, I might have been a little concerned.

This may be behind the firewall, so the link is below for those who can access the article. The attorneys for the various defendants are now preparing a record of their legal expenses to submit to the judge. The two attorneys who filed the suit plan to appeal.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics ... 2f47e42b45Washington Post 8/4/21 wrote:Federal judge punishes Colorado lawyers for 2020 election lawsuit
A federal judge in Colorado has disciplined two lawyers who filed a lawsuit challenging the 2020 election late last year, finding that the case was “frivolous,” “not warranted by existing law” and filed “in bad faith.” In a scathing 68-page opinion, Magistrate Judge N. Reid Neureiter found that the lawyers made little effort to corroborate information they had included in the suit, which argued there had been a vast national conspiracy to steal the election from President Donald Trump.
He particularly called out the duo, Gary D. Fielder and Ernest John Walker, for quoting Trump in their legal filing, which cited a presidential tweet that claimed without evidence that voting machines manufactured by the company Dominion Voting Systems had “deleted 2.7 million Trump votes nationwide.” Neureiter called that allegation “highly disputed and inflammatory” and said the lawyers made no efforts to verify it.
The two lawyers filed the case as a class action on behalf of 160 million American voters, alleging a complicated plot engineered by Dominion; Facebook; its founder Mark Zuckerberg; his wife, Priscilla Chan; and elected officials in four states. They had sought $160 billion in damages. The case was dismissed in April, but Neureiter ruled that the attorneys had violated their ethical obligations by lodging it in the first place and by peppering their motions with wild allegations that they had made little effort to substantiate. Legal rules prohibit attorneys from clogging the court systems with frivolous motions or from filing information that is not true. Calling the suit “one enormous conspiracy theory,” Neureiter ordered that the duo must pay the legal fees of all the individuals and companies they had sued — 18 separate entities in all — as a way to deter future similar cases.
While the lawyers attached affidavits from various people who alleged the election had been rigged — a common tactic of Trump supporters in the dozens of challenges filed in the months after the election — Neureiter said a close examination of the testimony showed it was “notable only in demonstrating no firsthand knowledge by any Plaintiff of any election fraud, misconduct, or malfeasance.”

Bogus GOP Arizona audit confirms the obvious: Biden won
So, millions of dollars of Arizona taxpayer money confirms what everyone except Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani already knew.Donald Trump's effort to destroy confidence in America's elections suffered a serious setback late Thursday after a draft of the sham review ordered by Arizona Republicans confirmed that he had lost to President Joe Biden in the state's critical Maricopa County. But the ex-President's relentless campaign of lies took on new life as he prompted Texas to review its own vote counts.
Details of the partisan report in Arizona emerged hours before GOP members of the state Senate were due to present the findings of an "audit" that Trump supporters believed would back up his false claims of fraud in a state he lost to Biden last November. But the chairman of the Maricopa Board of Supervisors -- which ran the election and rejected Trump's claims -- said the report proved the election results were sound.
"You don't have to dig deep into the draft copy of the Arizona Senate/Cyber Ninja audit report to confirm what I already knew -- the candidates certified by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, Governor, Secretary of State and Attorney General -- did, in fact, win," Chairman Jack Sellers, a Republican, said.
Critics had warned that the firm charged with doing the audit, Cyber Ninjas, had no experience in elections, had links to Trump's orbit and conducted a bizarre process carried out in secrecy.

Re: The election irregularities as presented thus far
Early voting for the Senate runoff started in earnest today in many Georgia counties despite the best efforts of Republicans, including Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to prevent it. At issue was the 2021 law that shortened the runoff period from nine weeks to four (there were three weeks of early voting before the general election). Previous Georgia law prohibited early voting on state holidays or the day after. Thanksgiving Friday is a state holiday in Georgia. The holiday was originally Robert E. Lee's birthday in January, and because Georgia prohibited celebrating state holidays while the General Assembly was in session, it was celebrated on Thanksgiving Friday, which I'm sure most people preferred. Similarly, President's Day is not celebrated, but Christmas Eve is a holiday instead. Lee's name was removed from the holiday a few years back and now it's just called "state holiday" officially.
In 2017, the law prohibiting early voting the day after a state holiday was changed to remove the word "runoff." As a result, there was Saturday voting on December 26 in 2020. However, this year, Raffensperger claimed that the law barred early voting today, the only Saturday on which it would otherwise be legally allowed. The trial court and Court of Appeals ruled in favor of early voting today, and Raffensperger dropped his appeal. Nevertheless, the Georgia Republican Party appealed to the Georgia Supreme Court, which unanimously turned the appeal down, without comment.
Early voting is mandatory next week, Monday through Friday, and optional today and tomorrow. About 20 counties will have early voting today and tomorrow, including all the metropolitan counties with heavy Democratic constituencies. Our daughter tried to vote today but left after waiting an hour and learning she would need to wait at least another hour. Lines are long in many metro Atlanta counties. She will return on her next day off, Wednesday, and arrive when the doors open at 7:00. Mrs. SSS and I will vote absentee, as in the general election, and I'll drop off our ballots in the drop box Monday.
