Lyrically Speaking - 1/8/21

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Jan 08, 2021 5:53 am

Here is the first Player Participation Friday game of the 2021 LSWE, where I asked you all to send me a song for the game based on the following extremely complicated (according to Sprots) theme...

The aliens have landed, and you have been chosen to be earth's ambassador who will show them around the planet. The aliens, as you might expect, aren't too happy with what they see on the third rock from the sun. You notice on the mothership overhead that they're preparing the giant laser that will turn the earth into tiny pebbles... and you only have a few minutes remaining to change their minds and show them that there are redeeming values to humanity! You quickly whip out your music collection and select what song to play for the aliens, which you hope will save the world!

Perhaps not surprisingly, since I tried to be extremely cute with how I described the background situation, most, if not everyone, who played along didn't quite interpret this the way I had planned. That's my fault, so I decided to play along with everyone else and made my own submission sorta match with the vibe of everyone else's songs. 11 of you sent me a song (the other 5 of you are officially on report), so with my entry worked in, that made this game just meet the LSWE minimum of 12 songs! Good luck saving the world...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 5 points for identifying which song I contributed to the game...

1. When the road looks rough ahead
And you're miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said

2. Till forever, on it goes
Through the circle, fast and slow
I know, it can't stop, I wonder

3. All of you brothers over in Africa
Tell all the folks in
Egypt and Israel, too

4. After the laughter has died away
And all the boys have had their fun
No surface noise now, not much to say
They got the bad guys on the run

5. I'll take your part
Oh, when darkness comes
And pain is all around

6. Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her

7. Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If she's gone I can't go on
Feelin' two-foot small

8. So many have tried,
Tried To find a love
Like yours and mine, hmm, mm, mm
Girl, don't you realize
How you hypnotize

9. Nothing seems to kill me no matter how hard I try
Nothing is closing my eyes
Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight
And nothing seems to break me
No matter how hard I fall nothing can break me at all
Not one for giving up though not invincible I know

10. There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

11. The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces
Of people going by

12. And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week

Which song did I contribute to this game?

Edited only to take out an extra inadvertent image.

OK, that was true. Then I saw a typo that would cause LB to make fun of me but not give me my much-deserved JJC points. So I fixed it, causing a second edit.

You've Got a Friend in Me -- Randy Newman

2. Till forever, on it goes
Through the circle, fast and slow
I know, it can't stop, I wonder

3. All of you brothers over in Africa
Tell all the folks in
Egypt and Israel, too

Love Train -- The O'Jays

4. After the laughter has died away
And all the boys have had their fun
No surface noise now, not much to say
They got the bad guys on the run

5. I'll take your part
Oh, when darkness comes
And pain is all around

Bridge Over Troubled Water -- Simon & Garfunkel

6. Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her

Hallelujah -- Jeff Buckley

7. Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If she's gone I can't go on
Feelin' two-foot small

You've Got to Hide Your Love Away -- The Beatles

8. So many have tried,
Tried To find a love
Like yours and mine, hmm, mm, mm
Girl, don't you realize
How you hypnotize

Shining Star -- The Manhattans

9. Nothing seems to kill me no matter how hard I try
Nothing is closing my eyes
Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight
And nothing seems to break me
No matter how hard I fall nothing can break me at all
Not one for giving up though not invincible I know

10. There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

For What it's Worth -- Buffalo Springfield

11. The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces
Of people going by

Wonderful World -- Louis Armstrong

12. And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week

Rocket Men -- Elton John

Which song did I contribute to this game? I dunno, you always surprise me with your choices. And there's like, no 1980s songs among the ones I knew. I'll guess Shining Star.

Kroxquo Bonus: Oops. Looks like that didn't work, and the earth just became another asteroid belt. Name a song with artist to remember our planet by...

Memories -- Elvis Presley

So I thought the point was to talk them out of blowing the shit out of everything...what was the true purpose?

Meanwhile, the weekend kind of got away from me (Your Denver Nuggets!!!!11 had two afternoon games) and I wasn't on the computer and forgot about LSWE (I know!) so no time for comments on this one. Let's see how that goes...

1. When the road looks rough ahead
And you're miles and miles
From your nice warm bed
You just remember what your old pal said

You've Got a Friend in Me - Randy Newman

I used to love Randy Newman when he was a shit shirring satirist, then he spent decades Oscar hunting and it, I don't know, kind of took away the edge...

2. Till forever, on it goes
Through the circle, fast and slow
I know, it can't stop, I wonder

Have You Ever Seen the Rain? - Creedence Clearwater Revival

3. All of you brothers over in Africa
Tell all the folks in
Egypt and Israel, too

Love Train - O'Jays

Aw this always makes me think of Clem and Scrubs (not necessarily in that order...ha!)

4. After the laughter has died away
And all the boys have had their fun
No surface noise now, not much to say
They got the bad guys on the run

5. I'll take your part
Oh, when darkness comes
And pain is all around

Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel

You know, I always liked Simon and Garfunkel, even though they were kind of hippy dippy sixties folk troubadour types, but this is like their Honey to me. I know, why don't I ever actually like the hits and instead go for the album cuts??

6. Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her

Hallelujah - Bon Jovi

I know I mention this every time it shows up in LS (which is like every year but I haven't played for several), this is (now was, I guess) Leonard Cohen's favourite version. I really hate when people (mostly on singing comps) treat this like some religious, praise God gospel song, when it's really pretty much the opposite..

7. Here I stand head in hand
Turn my face to the wall
If she's gone I can't go on
Feelin' two-foot small

Hide Your Love Away - Beatles

Now we're talking! My favourite Beatles song, (which needs no parenthetical, thank you). It's deceivingly simplisitic, but very personal to me.

8. So many have tried,
Tried To find a love
Like yours and mine, hmm, mm, mm
Girl, don't you realize
How you hypnotize

9. Nothing seems to kill me no matter how hard I try
Nothing is closing my eyes
Nothing can beat me down for your pain or delight
And nothing seems to break me
No matter how hard I fall nothing can break me at all
Not one for giving up though not invincible I know

10. There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield

Do I get an 'oh, that's cute" point for guessing my own song?

11. The colors of the rainbow
So pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces
Of people going by

Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

I would go for the gorgeous version Iz did, but it's too late and I'm in too much of a hurry, to figure out the spelling... my quick take would be Kamakawio'ole. (And I'm not even looking back to see how atrocious that is...

12. And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week

Rocket Man - Elton John

Which song did I contribute to this game?

I'll say number nine, because you like all this weird 90s shit that I don't know. Plus number 9, number 9, number 9....ha!

Kroxquo Bonus: Oops. Looks like that didn't work, and the earth just became another asteroid belt. Name a song with artist to remember our planet by...

Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major BWV 1068 - J.S. Bach

I know it's not a typical LSWE entry (but remember, I'm the one that had a whole game with an instrumental bonus in it...ha!), but this is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard and it never fails to move me. I'm tearing up right now just hearing it my head...

Image Bonus: It came from outer space.....

Image

Yeah, I know everybody is going to use something from this movie, but I don't care. I'm still shell shocked over Milton Bradley...

Getting so much resistance from behind
For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield

12. And all this science I don't understand
It's just my job five days a week
Rocket Man - Elton John

Which song did I contribute to this game?

#4 - It's A Mistake

Speaking of mistakes.... this game started off as me basically wanting you to give me the one song that is so epic, it basically justifies the existence of music and even humanity itself. Then I had to throw in the alien story, and that thought got lost while everyone concentrated on pacifying the invaders. Like I said, my fault for getting too cute. I'll try to keep things simpler in the future, and not just for Sprots...

Image Bonus: It came from outer space.....

And speaking of Sprots.... I'm going outside the box on the IBB this time and giving it to her for the Northern Lights, which technically do come from outer space. Congratulations, and I only did it as a favor to ES...
