Lyrically Speaking - 1/7/21

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Jan 07, 2021 5:38 am

Below are 10 pairs of songs that are all different songs which happen to have the same titles. And the pairs are all together, so 1 and 2 have the same title, 3 and 4 have the same title, etc. This might help you pick up a few cheap points. Along the way, if you can identify which same-titled song in each pair had the highest peak position on what constituted the primary US pop chart at the time of its release, that will get you another point. With 57 points available in this game, you can either clean up or get left in the dust...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 1 point for which song in each pair charted the highest...

1. You can turn this world around
And bring back all of those happy days
Put your troubles down
It's time to celebrate

2. Hear the dogs howling out of key
To a hymn called "Faith and Misery" (Hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war today

3. I call you on the phone
But never get a rise
So sit there all alone
It's time you realize

4. I'm going all the way
Sooner or later
Gotta love somebody

5. And if I had the sun and moon
We will shine them
I would give you
Both night and day
Love satisfying

6. When you talk to me
When you`re moaning sweet and low
When you`re touching me
And my feelings start to show
Ooh ooh ooh

7. You know I can be found
Sitting home all alone
If you can't come around
At least please telephone

8. Oh, girl, as long as I
Been giving my love to you
You should be giving
Me your love, too
But you just keep on acting
Just like a fool
You know it ain't cool

9. I always dug the color of your hair
I always loved the clothes you wear
I can't say that you turn me on
But why'd I stay all night long

10. Looking for a lover
Who won't blow my cover
She's so hard to find

11. Two o'clock this morning
If she should come a calling
I couldn't dream of turning her away

12. Something in the moonlight
Catches my eye
The shadow of a lover
Goes dancing by
Looking for a little
Bit of love to grow

13. When you're with me I'm smiling
Give me all your love
Your hands build me up when I'm sinking
Touch me and my troubles all fade

14. Look around, come to me
I have no answers
But know where I wanna be

15. While they while away the hours
In their ivory towers
'Til they're covered up with flowers
In the back of a black limousine, whoa-ah

16. Where do we go from here
Now that all of the
Children have grown up
And how do we spend our time
Knowing nobody gives us a damn

17. Well-a well-a well-a over the rainbow
That's where I'm gonna climb
Way up high where the bluebirds fly
I'm gonna love you all the time

18. When she gets there, she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can't get
What she came for

19. Say you're leaving on
The seven thirty train
And that you're heading out
To Hollywood

20. Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you're in control

Below are 10 pairs of songs that are all different songs which happen to have the same titles. And the pairs are all together, so 1 and 2 have the same title, 3 and 4 have the same title, etc. This might help you pick up a few cheap points. Along the way, if you can identify which same-titled song in each pair had the highest peak position on what constituted the primary US pop chart at the time of its release, that will get you another point. With 57 points available in this game, you can either clean up or get left in the dust...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 1 point for which song in each pair charted the highest...

** = highest chart position

1. You can turn this world around

1. You can turn this world around
And bring back all of those happy days
Put your troubles down
It's time to celebrate

Holiday - Madonna - WINNER

Lots of early Madge this year already. I feel the need for a big headband with a floppy bow...

2. Hear the dogs howling out of key
To a hymn called "Faith and Misery" (Hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war today

Holiday - Green Day - WAS THIS EVEN A SINGLE?

Speaking of head bands...ha!

3. I call you on the phone
But never get a rise
So sit there all alone
It's time you realize

Nobody's Fool - Cinderella

Yay! I love Cinderella, but it seems like they were always looked at like a cut-rate Bon Jovi so I'm not sure about any chart success.

Although The More Things Change is still relevant, ain't it?

4. I'm going all the way
Sooner or later
Gotta love somebody

Nobody's Fool - Kenny Loggins - WINNER

I know there was a soundtrack song titled this, but I'm not even sure who did it. But when in doubt with 80s movie soundtracks, always go Loggins...

5. And if I had the sun and moon
We will shine them
I would give you
Both night and day
Love satisfying

Feel Like Making Love - Bad Company - WINNER

I was entranced with Boz Burrell's fretless bass, but even with that this song got on my nerves so bad after being played ad nauseum BITD I still can't enjoy it

6. When you talk to me
When you`re moaning sweet and low
When you`re touching me
And my feelings start to show
Ooh ooh ooh

Feel Like Making Love - Roberta Flack

I think her biggest hit was Killing Me Softly, so I'm going Bad Co on this one

7. You know I can be found
Sitting home all alone
If you can't come around
At least please telephone

Don't Be Cruel - Cheap Trick

A rare exception to the always go with the original artist

8. Oh, girl, as long as I
Been giving my love to you
You should be giving
Me your love, too
But you just keep on acting
Just like a fool
You know it ain't cool

Don't Be Cruel - Bobby Brown - WINNER

This is a toughie, because Lap of Luxury was Cheap Trick's big comeback and I believe their first foray into videos, but Bobbay was HUGE in his day

9. I always dug the color of your hair
I always loved the clothes you wear
I can't say that you turn me on
But why'd I stay all night long

Take It Easy - Some Fruity English Club Guy

My all purpose artist name for the season, just for you!

10. Looking for a lover
Who won't blow my cover
She's so hard to find

Take It Easy - Eagles - WINNER

Got's to be, since I never heard of the other one and the Eagles (not The Eagles!) WERE the 70s...

11. Two o'clock this morning
If she should come a calling
I couldn't dream of turning her away

Heart and Soul - Huey Lewis and maybe the News - WINNER

I thought you might be able to go with a triple here with Train, but I that was a parenthetical and Hoagy is kind of a cheat since it's a standard

12. Something in the moonlight
Catches my eye
The shadow of a lover
Goes dancing by
Looking for a little
Bit of love to grow

Heart and Soul - T'Pau

I know they were a big OHW so this thing was huge, but Huey Lewis was to the 80s what the Eagles were to the 70s, so....

13. When you're with me I'm smiling
Give me all your love
Your hands build me up when I'm sinking
Touch me and my troubles all fade

Lady - Styx - WINNER

And then there was Styx there to bridge the gap between the Eagles and the News, until Dennis de Young got way too sappy and out there and artsy and Tommy Shaw couldn't take that shit no more.
Which worked out because that gave the world Damn Yankees, one of my fave groups of all time. I've also seen all of the Damn Yankees separately, but never all together

14. Look around, come to me
I have no answers
But know where I wanna be

Lady - Little River Band

This IS LRB, right? I always get them confused with Air Supply. Either way, had you used Kenny Rogers, I'll bet he would have beat both of these entries

15. While they while away the hours
In their ivory towers
'Til they're covered up with flowers
In the back of a black limousine, whoa-ah

Game People Play - Joe South - WINNER WINNER WINNER

Ah, the eternal same name song....

16. Where do we go from here
Now that all of the
Children have grown up
And how do we spend our time
Knowing nobody gives us a damn

Games People Play - Alan Parsons

Even though I refuse to recognize the existence of this song, I'll play along for the pointage

17. Well-a well-a well-a over the rainbow
That's where I'm gonna climb
Way up high where the bluebirds fly
I'm gonna love you all the time

Stairway to Heaven - Neil Sedaka - WINNER

Damn, I haven't thought about this song in ages. Best example ever as the second one in is the one people know...

Added after the next musing, yeah I'm going for it! Even if I'm the only one that gets this wrong, I should still net a Brave Little Toaster point for the effort

18. When she gets there, she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can't get
What she came for

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

But, dammit, now that I think about, this is one of those so obvious it's wrong type things. Because I don't think that Stairway was ever released as a single. It just got played by late night FM disc jockeys who needed a dump or a smoke

19. Say you're leaving on
The seven thirty train
And that you're heading out
To Hollywood

Crazy - Aerosmith

Obviously it was a hit, but I think I saw the video a lot more than I heard it on the radio. Until it became "classic rock" and now I hear it constantly on the oldies stations that I mostly listen to now that I turned against current music for the most part.

20. Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you're in control

Crazy - Gnarls Barkley - WINNER

This, on the other hand, was every third song on the radio in its heyday. Although I wonder if, like the Lady example above, Willie Nelson's would beat both of these...

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another pair of songs with artists that are different songs but with the same title. (Just 2 points for this Krox)

Love Song - Tesla and Sara Barielles (age before beauty)

I like both of these songs, but for different reasons. Or maybe not so different, once I think about it. I wanted to use Memories by Maroon 5 because it's my favorite recent song but, believe it or not, I can't remember if the Streisand song is Memories or Memory. Also considered back to back Hoyts, but the Christmas song Joy to the World is like a standard in the cheat category.

Image Bonus: Show me someone or something with a more familiar namesake.

I wanted to go with Milton Bradley to try and get your baseball bias, but I know I'm not going to get the IBB twice in one week, so I went with my favourite

Image

Do you know how surprisingly hard it was to find this? I kept coming up with nothing but the ointment and pictures of out athletes. Didn't help that, for some reason, I thought he played for the Jets. I don't know why, I just pictured him in green and white. Maybe that was his college colours? I need to investigate...

1. You can turn this world around
And bring back all of those happy days
Put your troubles down
It's time to celebrate
Holiday - Madonna (#16)

2. Hear the dogs howling out of key
To a hymn called "Faith and Misery" (Hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war today
Holiday - Green Day (#19)

Madonna's song was on the charts in my Top 40 heyday of early 1984, and I can't believe it didn't climb higher than that... but it still edged Green Day. Despite that being one of the better known songs of the 2000's, those charts were so full of rap posses and American Idol rejects that rock songs didn't stand a chance...

3. I call you on the phone
But never get a rise
So sit there all alone
It's time you realize
Nobody's Fool - Cinderella (#13)

4. I'm going all the way
Sooner or later
Gotta love somebody
Nobody's Fool - Kenny Loggins (#8)

My favorite Loggins movie theme, and it was the least popular of the four big soundtrack hits he did in the 80's. Bad sequels yielded some of the better soundtrack songs, i.e. "On Our Own" being my favorite Bobby Brown song...

5. And if I had the sun and moon
We will shine them
I would give you
Both night and day
Love satisfying
Feel Like Makin' Love - Bad Company (#10)

6. When you talk to me
When you`re moaning sweet and low
When you`re touching me
And my feelings start to show
Ooh ooh ooh
Feel Like Makin' Love - Roberta Flack (#1)

Flack had THREE number one songs. Bruce Springsteen never had any. Life isn't always fair...

7. You know I can be found
Sitting home all alone
If you can't come around
At least please telephone
Don't Be Cruel - Elvis Presley (#1) or Cheap Trick (#4)

8. Oh, girl, as long as I
Been giving my love to you
You should be giving
Me your love, too
But you just keep on acting
Just like a fool
You know it ain't cool
Don't Be Cruel - Bobby Brown (#8)

Yes, I made sure this worked for Cheap Trick as well, especially since I knew SOMEONE would answer them. That's OK, their version is better. Even if it............. doesn't really have a pregnant pause.

9. I always dug the color of your hair
I always loved the clothes you wear
I can't say that you turn me on
But why'd I stay all night long
Take It Easy - Andy Taylor (#24)

10. Looking for a lover
Who won't blow my cover
She's so hard to find
Take It Easy - Eagles (#12)

Yeah, despite being one of the anthems of the 70's, that Eagles song wasn't even a Top 10 hit. Still, it beat out Andy Taylor's fucking epic song (another bad 80's movie soundtrack theme!) and that's a goddamn shame...

11. Two o'clock this morning
If she should come a calling
I couldn't dream of turning her away
Heart & Soul - Huey Lewis and the News (#8)

12. Something in the moonlight
Catches my eye
The shadow of a lover
Goes dancing by
Looking for a little
Bit of love to grow
Heart & Soul - T'Pau (#4)

It always amazes me that the T'Pau song gets missed so often when I use it. At least around here, it's still in the variety music stations' rotations. And yes, it beat out Huey! I pointed out when I featured "Jacob's Ladder" on my blog a few years ago that, if you use "The Power of Love" as the barrier, early Huey is better remembered than late Huey. Yet late Huey was a much bigger chart success than early Huey. Just goes to show that our memories don't always match up with the reality of history...

13. When you're with me I'm smiling
Give me all your love
Your hands build me up when I'm sinking
Touch me and my troubles all fade
Lady - Styx (#6)

14. Look around, come to me
I have no answers
But know where I wanna be
Lady - Little River Band (#10)

Nothing much to say here... two crappy songs by bands I otherwise love. Had I spent a little more time thinking on this game, I wouldn't have had to even throw such a gimme pair in here as pulling from all the "Lady" songs...

15. While they while away the hours
In their ivory towers
'Til they're covered up with flowers
In the back of a black limousine, whoa-ah
Games People Play - Joe South (#12)

16. Where do we go from here
Now that all of the
Children have grown up
And how do we spend our time
Knowing nobody gives us a damn
Games People Play - Alan Parsons Project (#16)

I don't even think I actually know the South song. I wanted to put The Spinners in here, but they have that GD parenthetical in the song that made it messy with the theme of identical titles. Early LSWE players may remember the APP song always wound up dropping somewhere in the game each year, and entirely by coincidence. This is probably the first time I've used it in a long time...

17. Well-a well-a well-a over the rainbow
That's where I'm gonna climb
Way up high where the bluebirds fly
I'm gonna love you all the time
Stairway To Heaven - Neil Sedaka (#9)

18. When she gets there, she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can't get
What she came for
Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin (#DNC)

At some point before I yanked the cable a year ago (maybe even for one of my LSWE finales), Music Choice played the Sedaka song, and the seed for this game was planted. I'd never heard it before. This pair also inspired the chart position bonus point, since I wanted to see how many people would just assume Zeppelin had the bigger "hit." I'm such an evil game meister...

19. Say you're leaving on
The seven thirty train
And that you're heading out
To Hollywood
Crazy - Aerosmith (#17)

20. Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you're in control
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley (#2)

Even at the time, people must have known that Aerosmith song was a piece of shit. You'd never guess it wasn't a #1 by how often it gets played now. And the pop charts hadn't been totally taken over by the rap and R&B crowd by then, so 90's Aerosmith has no excuse for not being chart successful in its own time...

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another pair of songs with artists that are different songs but with the same title. (Just 2 points for this Krox)

Even before Earl pointed it out, I had caught TBone's Black and/or White mistake. It earned some JJC points, though, because it just proves that anyone and everyone slips up sometimes...

Image Bonus: Show me someone or something with a more familiar namesake.

Quite an interesting selection of doppelgangers here. I might have given Earl a second IBB had she used Milton Bradley, but instead it'll go to Frank for the audacity to assume that anyone even remembers who those Renaissance artist hacks were these days...

JJC Points:

Panic gets 2 JJC points for quite a pair, and for the other Anne...

Vandal gets 3 JJC points for mere cats...

Weasel gets 2 JJC points for the Krox (Warwick's Heartbreaker is a huge guilty fave) and for the other other Anne being less famous...

Sprots gets 2 JJC points for Castle Rock, which my Mom, being the big Stephen King and Colorado fan, always assumes was THE Castle Rock in the stories...

frank gets 2 JJC points for the more well known Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael...

TBone gets 2 JJC points for the B&W oopsie and for our 22nd and 24th President...

Krox gets 2 JJC points for the non-rhymin' Simon...

mrk gets 2 JJC points for a glass tiger...

melly gets a JJC point because although the image isn't retrievable, I knew what she was going for and it's interesting that she has a golfing namesake...

jarnon gets a JJC point for the other Apple...

Earl gets a supermax because I had to tally her points manually on a piece of paper while I stopped to read all of the comments. And I'd never heard of Ben Gay before, but looking him up, his one season was just after weekends at Mecca pretty much did in my being able to really follow football...

Bob gets 2 JJC points for missing the majority of the coin flips in the game...

Vandal 35+3
Weasel 41+2
Sprots 31+2

Flipped over to Baseball Reference after I saw Vandal's RIP posted, and noticed this obscure old player in the birthdays section. Would've worked perfectly with the more famous namesake theme of this game...

Rusty Kuntz is a legend, though, in a Dick Trickle kind of way. I doubt many people had heard of Mr. Weiser before....
