Lyrically Speaking - 1/6/21

#1 Post by Ody » Wed Jan 06, 2021 7:41 am

Hello, it's Ody. Do you remember me? I don't get to post much anymore since dragging LB away from the computer is next to impossible. I had to use my claws to slice an artery to get this screen time I have now. So while LB's busy applying a tourniquet to his ankle, I'm going to post this LSWE game I wrote for you all. It's got a theme to it that most of you can probably relate to. Be sure to take this time to send me some scritches and love since I doubt I'll be allowed out of the new jail LB bought for me for a few years after this stunt. Purrrrrrrr.....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 3 points for the theme...

1. I used to be such a
Sweet, sweet thing
Til they got a hold of me
I opened doors for little old ladies
I helped the blind to see

2. Then the first snow came
And she ran out
To brush the snow away
So it wouldn't die

3. He let go a laugh, let go a laugh
Shook back his clothes all around

4. I call you on the telephone
My voice too rough with cigarettes
I sometimes feel I should just go home
But I'm dealing with a memory
That never forgets

5. Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains, I don't care
Cause it's all right

6. Cause they told me when I was younger
Saying, boy, you're gonna be President
But just like everything else those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went

7. Just finish cleaning up your room
Let's see that dust fly with that broom
Get all that garbage out of sight
Or you don't go out Friday night

8. Staring at the fire
For hours and hours
While I listen to you
Play your love songs
All night long for me, only for me

9. You should take it as a compliment
That I got drunk and made fun of the way you talk
You should think about the consequence
Of your magnetic field being a little too strong

10. Give me the ring on your finger
Let me see the lines of your hand
I can see me a tall dark stranger
Giving you what you hadn't planned

11. The girls are all jocking
At the other end of the bar
Having drinks with some no-name chump
When they know that I`m the star

12. Or you can tell your friends
Just what a fool I've been
And laugh and joke
About me on the phone

No Meow Mr. Nice Guy - Alice Cooper Group

And we have the first Alice sighting of the year! Yay!!!11 Also, SWIDT?

2. Then the first snow came
And she ran out
To brush the snow away
So it wouldn't die

Honey (Blech) - Bobby Goldsboro

The exception to the rule of not adding parentheticals to song titles. After #1 I thought this might be a list of my faves. I was wrong, oh so wrong...

3. He let go a laugh, let go a laugh
Shook back his clothes all around

Mr. Bojangles - Jerry Jeff Walker

Hey! We're back to my favourites! Although, ironically (or contrarily) this is one of my least fave from JJW. I also see the theme (I don't remember Honey having pets, but it must've been a dog because a cat wouldn't have stuck around for that sappy shit).

4. I call you on the telephone
My voice too rough with cigarettes
I sometimes feel I should just go home
But I'm dealing with a memory
That never forgets

You Better You Bet - The Who

5. Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains, I don't care
Cause it's all right

Touch of Grey - Grateful Dead

Spelling counts!

6. Cause they told me when I was younger
Saying, boy, you're gonna be President
But just like everything else those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went

Little Pink Houses - John Cougar Mellencamp

There should be a side game where you get a bonus if you hit the right name combo for the song release date...

7. Just finish cleaning up your room
Let's see that dust fly with that broom
Get all that garbage out of sight
Or you don't go out Friday night

Yakety Yak - Coasters

8. Staring at the fire
For hours and hours
While I listen to you
Play your love songs
All night long for me, only for me

Our House - Crosby Stills & Nash

Another good side bet candidate...

9. You should take it as a compliment
That I got drunk and made fun of the way you talk
You should think about the consequence
Of your magnetic field being a little too strong

10. Give me the ring on your finger
Let me see the lines of your hand
I can see me a tall dark stranger
Giving you what you hadn't planned

Devil Woman - Cliff Richard

I had to pause at this point to try and get Witchy Woman out of my head...

11. The girls are all jocking
At the other end of the bar
Having drinks with some no-name chump
When they know that I`m the star

Funky Cold Medina - Tone-Loc

Woot!!!11

12. Or you can tell your friends
Just what a fool I've been
And laugh and joke
About me on the phone

Achy Break Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus

Okay, way more good than bad here, even with Honey stinking up the joint...

Theme?

Cats. And Dogs. And Cats and Dogs.

Obviously my stringent requirements force me to come up with a krox including both. If Alice and Charlie Brown can do it, so can I!

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that fits the theme of today's game.

Della and the Dealer - Hoyt Axton

Della and the dealer and a dog named Jake and a cat named Kalamazoo. I actually came up with two but, as much as I love Bobby Bare, Hoyt always takes the prize. Plus they have names, extra bonus points for me!

Damn, Jerry Jeff and Hoyt....where's JJ when you need him???

Image Bonus: If you know the theme, show me a fitting image!

Okay here's my actual entry to include both requirements

Image

But I couldn't resist this one, it's so Earl...

1. I used to be such a
Sweet, sweet thing

I helped the blind to see
No More Mr. Nice Guy - Alice Cooper

2. Then the first snow came
And she ran out
To brush the snow away
So it wouldn't die
Honey - Bobby Goldsboro (I don't think I've ever actually heard this song before... but I know it has a reputation with some of my players, so I try to use it whenever I can!)

3. He let go a laugh, let go a laugh
Shook back his clothes all around
Mr. Bojangles - Lots of people, including some dude with a guitar who was singing for people at Royal Gorge in 1996

4. I call you on the telephone
My voice too rough with cigarettes
I sometimes feel I should just go home
But I'm dealing with a memory
That never forgets
You Better You Bet - The Who (The first video ever played twice on MTV. Now you know...)

5. Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains, I don't care
Cause it's all right
Touch of Grey - Grateful Dead

6. Cause they told me when I was younger
Saying, boy, you're gonna be President
But just like everything else those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went
Pink Houses - John Cougar Mellencamp (The entire era from Johnny Cougar to the strange symbol I'm sure he used for a time in the 2000's will always be listed as JCM by me [or BCM for Weasel]...)

7. Just finish cleaning up your room
Let's see that dust fly with that broom
Get all that garbage out of sight
Or you don't go out Friday night
Yakity Yak - Coasters

8. Staring at the fire
For hours and hours
While I listen to you
Play your love songs
All night long for me, only for me
Our House - CSN And Sometimes (But Not This Time) Y

9. You should take it as a compliment
That I got drunk and made fun of the way you talk
You should think about the consequence
Of your magnetic field being a little too strong
Gorgeous - Taylor Swift (Sorry, a Mecca earworm I just had to throw in...)

10. Give me the ring on your finger
Let me see the lines of your hand
I can see me a tall dark stranger
Giving you what you hadn't planned
Devil Woman - Cliff Richard

11. The girls are all jocking
At the other end of the bar
Having drinks with some no-name chump
When they know that I`m the star
Funky Cold Medina - Tone Loc (Alex from Stroh's immortalized!)

12. Or you can tell your friends
Just what a fool I've been
And laugh and joke
About me on the phone
Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus

Theme? - Cats and Dogs as PETS in the lyrics (I didn't dock you for just saying cats and dogs, but the intended theme was PETS, and I didn't want to venture beyond the two main furry companions. I gave Krox 1 point for just dogs...)

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that fits the theme of today's game. - Again, since it's early, I took anything that mentioned a cat or a dog, even if it didn't do so as an animal, let alone a pet. I won't be as lenient in later weeks...

Image Bonus: If you know the theme, show me a fitting image!

It was a grand battle of the cat memes! This one came down to Earl and Weasel, and since the Squirrel already won an IBB this year, I'm awarding it to Weasel this time. Had he included the Murder Button meme first, it would have been a gimme anyway...

JJC Points:

Weasel gets 3 JJC points for the murder button...

Vandal gets 2 JJC points for me fortunately recognizing the "meme" being played on there (Even if I can't tell my gothic housewives apart)...

Panic gets 2 JJC points for the inner thoughts of cats and dogs...

frank gets 2 JJC points for mouse murdering song...

TBone gets 2 JJC points for Augie Doggie, not to be confused with TR fave Augie Ojeda...

Beebs gets a supermax for Wee Eddie and crunchy fried crickets...

melly gets a JJC point for copying off of Frank's paper...

Sprots gets 2 JJC points for finding something almost as cute as ES...

Earl gets a supermax for extraneous parentheticals, being obsessed with Starplane artists, dog cushions, and thinking I'd ever write a game themed around her favourite songs...

Points:

Weasel 27+3+5
Vandal 10+2
jarnon 1
Panic 30+2
frank 24+2
ear 11
TBone 30+2
Beebs 0+5
melly 26+1
Saucy 4
Sprots 25+2
Krox 16
Hottie 11
Earl 32+5

8.Our House - CSN And Sometimes (But Not This Time) Y

Depends on the interpretation. You are correct in saying Young did not contribute to the song, although it is credited to CSNY on the 45, and it's from the album Deja Vu, which is credited to CSNY.
