Lyrically Speaking - 1/5/21

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Tue Jan 05, 2021 4:51 am

No matter how much I unravel the classic format that dominated the LSWE's heyday, I just can't seem to part with Tuesday Wordplay. It's perfectly fine to have a theme on Wednesday, or a Merry Man host on Monday.... but songs that all have a common word in the title? That's stuck on Tuesday, maybe the most underrated day of the week to those not named Wimpy or Sheryl Crow. Here's the first Tuesday Wordplay of the 2021 LSWE...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. I heard you on the wireless back in fifty-two
Lying awake intently tuning in on you
If I was young it didn't stop you coming through

2. Born a man-child of the sun, yeah
Yeah, saw my work had just begun
Yeah, found I had to stand alone, yeah
Well, bless it now, I've got my own
Oh, yeah, oh, yeah

3. It's a cool place and they say it gets colder
You're bundled up now but wait 'til you get older
But the meteor men beg to differ
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture

4. Come on, shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right

5. I hear your name whispered on the wind
It's a sound that makes me cry
I hear a song blow again and again
Through my mind and I don't know why

6. Til the sun that loves you proud
When the system tries to bring you down
Every hand to shine tonight
You dont need darkness to do what you think is right

7. Oooh, it's a killing machine
It's got everything
Like a driving power
Big fat tires and everything

8. Johnny made a record
Went straight up to number one
Suddenly, everyone loved to
Hear him sing the song

9. Love songs written for you
It's been going down for years
But to sing what's in my heart
Seems more honest than the tears

10. Just think of all the moments that we'd spent
I just can't let you go for you, you were meant

11. You can come as you are with just your heart
And I'll take you in though you're rejected and hurt

12. It's life, Jim
But not as we know it
Not as we know it
Not as we know it
It's life, Jim
But not as we know it
Not as we know it, Captain

1. I heard you on the wireless back in fifty-two
Lying awake intently tuning in on you
If I was young it didn't stop you coming through

Yeah, saw my work had just begun
Yeah, found I had to stand alone, yeah
Well, bless it now, I've got my own

You're bundled up now but wait 'til you get older

Judging by the hole in the satellite picture

4. Come on, shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right

5. I hear your name whispered on the wind
It's a sound that makes me cry
I hear a song blow again and again
Through my mind and I don't know why

6. Til the sun that loves you proud
When the system tries to bring you down
Every hand to shine tonight
You dont need darkness to do what you think is right

7. Oooh, it's a killing machine
It's got everything
Like a driving power
Big fat tires and everything

8. Johnny made a record
Went straight up to number one
Suddenly, everyone loved to
Hear him sing the song

9. Love songs written for you
It's been going down for years
But to sing what's in my heart
Seems more honest than the tears

10. Just think of all the moments that we'd spent
I just can't let you go for you, you were meant

11. You can come as you are with just your heart
And I'll take you in though you're rejected and hurt

12. It's life, Jim
But not as we know it
Not as we know it

That's stuck on Tuesday, maybe the most underrated day of the week to those not named Wimpy or Sheryl Crow. Here's the first Tuesday Wordplay of the 2021 LSWE...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. I heard you on the wireless back in fifty-two
Lying awake intently tuning in on you
If I was young it didn't stop you coming through

Video killed the radio star

2. Born a man-child of the sun, yeah
Yeah, saw my work had just begun
Yeah, found I had to stand alone, yeah
Well, bless it now, I've got my own
Oh, yeah, oh, yeah

Star

3. It's a cool place and they say it gets colder
You're bundled up now but wait 'til you get older
But the meteor men beg to differ
Judging by the hole in the satellite picture

Star

4. Come on, shine your heavenly body tonight
'Cause I know you're gonna make everything all right

Lucky Star, Madonna

5. I hear your name whispered on the wind
It's a sound that makes me cry
I hear a song blow again and again
Through my mind and I don't know why

Star

6. Til the sun that loves you proud
When the system tries to bring you down
Every hand to shine tonight
You dont need darkness to do what you think is right

Star

7. Oooh, it's a killing machine
It's got everything
Like a driving power
Big fat tires and everything

Star

8. Johnny made a record
Went straight up to number one
Suddenly, everyone loved to
Hear him sing the song

Star

9. Love songs written for you
It's been going down for years
But to sing what's in my heart
Seems more honest than the tears

Star

10. Just think of all the moments that we'd spent
I just can't let you go for you, you were meant

Star

11. You can come as you are with just your heart
And I'll take you in though you're rejected and hurt

Star

12. It's life, Jim
But not as we know it
Not as we know it
Not as we know it
It's life, Jim
But not as we know it
Not as we know it, Captain

Star Trek, Nichelle Nichols

Video Killed the Radio Star - Buggles

2. Born a man-child of the sun, yeah

Well, bless it now, I've got my own
Oh, yeah, oh, yeah

All Star - Smashmouth

Lucky Star - Madonna

5. I hear your name whispered on the wind
It's a sound that makes me cry
I hear a song blow again and again
Through my mind and I don't know why
Waiting For A Star To Fall - Boy Meets Girl (Sorry, no Annie Bonus on the artist)

6. Til the sun that loves you proud
When the system tries to bring you down
Every hand to shine tonight
You dont need darkness to do what you think is right
Everybody Is A Star - Sly & the Family Stone

7. Oooh, it's a killing machine
It's got everything
Like a driving power
Big fat tires and everything
Highway Star - Deep Purple (Never knew the name of this song until I needed it for this game...)

8. Johnny made a record
Went straight up to number one
Suddenly, everyone loved to
Hear him sing the song
Shooting Star - Bad Company (Earl must have been soaking up this Mecca earworm the past six months...)

9. Love songs written for you
It's been going down for years
But to sing what's in my heart
Seems more honest than the tears
Dark Star - Crosby Stills & Nash

10. Just think of all the moments that we'd spent
I just can't let you go for you, you were meant

Not as we know it
Not as we know it
It's life, Jim
But not as we know it
Not as we know it, Captain
Star Trekkin' - The Firm (No, not the "Radioactive" Firm. I was introduced to this by a fellow blogger after I featured a squirrel six years ago that was sporting some "cling-ons." Even though I'm not a Trek fan by any means, the earworm was too catchy, and the claymation-like video was too cool not to check out over and over again. I rated this #19 in my Top 30 Novelty Song countdown I ran in 2018...)

Image Bonus: If you know the word, show me a fitting image!

Solid, but no real homerun images for this one. I'm picking Earl for the IBB, and probably as much for the saying it three times thing than the image itself...

mrk gets a JJC point for expanding my limited SNL recurring character archive...

Saucy gets a JJC point for being more than present...

Earl gets 3 JJC points, none for presciency, but for educating me about that Rolling Stones song and another GC native I was oblivious to (though my mental archive of famous GC alums rarely gets past Dal Maxvill and the late Kevin Greene)...
