Lyrically Speaking - 1/4/21

#1 Post by The Shithouse Rats » Mon Jan 04, 2021 8:02 am

TELL US WHY.... we don't like Mondays! Actually, we DO like Mondays when they're the day a new LSWE kicks off! You know what we like to do when we stay up all night? Play our instruments! It turns out, that's the theme of this first game of the LSWE which we were given the honor of hosting. Each of the songs below mentions one (and only one) musical instrument somewhere in its lyrics. You can even .. have a bonus point on the Rats if you identify that instrument in each song (Don't tell LB we're giving away extra points for something other than humour.... yes humoUr because we're British! And maybe sucking up).

Oh, and LB says to make sure and watch for the Friday theme request which will be posted shortly after this game goes up! I don't know why, we don't like Fridays either...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 1 point for the musical instrument mentioned in the song's lyrics...

1. Just come on back
If you ever wanna try again
I done told you once, you son of a bitch (or gun)
I'm the best there's ever been

2. Jump up and down and move it all around
Shake your head to the sound
Put your hand on the ground
Take one step left and one step right
One to the front and one to the side

3. Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music
Getting in the swing
You come to look for a King

4. Now shes moving all around the tables luring all in sight
But I know that she cannot see me hidden by the light
Closer closer she is getting nearer, soon she'll be in reach
As I enter into her spotlight, she stands lost for speech.

5. It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers, wild gamblers
That's all in the past

6. The old man said to me
Said, you can`t change
The world single handedly
Raise a glass enjoy the scenery

7. Luther croons
Sly's the original originator
James screams
Marvin was the only innovator

8. Got a beat up glove
A homemade bat
And a brand new pair of shoes

9. Deep down Louisiana
Close to New Orleans
Way back up in the woods
Among the evergreens

10. W.C. Handy
Won't you look down over me
Yeah, I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be

11. There's a place up ahead and I'm going
Just as fast as my feet can fly
Come away, come away if you're going
Leave the sinking ship behind

12. Guess who eats together
At the Carnegie Deli
Bowser from Sha Na Na
And Arthur Fonzarelli

The Shithouse Rats

The Devil Went Down to Georgia -- Charlie Daniels Band -- fiddle

2. Jump up and down and move it all around
Shake your head to the sound
Put your hand on the ground
Take one step left and one step right
One to the front and one to the side

Mambo #5 -- Lou Bega --trumpet

3. Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music
Getting in the swing
You come to look for a King

Dancing Queen -- ABBA tambourine

4. Now shes moving all around the tables luring all in sight
But I know that she cannot see me hidden by the light
Closer closer she is getting nearer, soon she'll be in reach
As I enter into her spotlight, she stands lost for speech.

5. It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers, wild gamblers
That's all in the past

Deacon Blues -- Steely Dan -- saxophone

6. The old man said to me
Said, you can`t change
The world single handedly
Raise a glass enjoy the scenery

7. Luther croons
Sly's the original originator
James screams
Marvin was the only innovator

When Smokey Sings -- ABC -- violins

8. Got a beat up glove
A homemade bat
And a brand new pair of shoes

Centerfield -- John Fogerty -- organ

9. Deep down Louisiana
Close to New Orleans
Way back up in the woods
Among the evergreens

Johnny B. Goode -- Chuck Berry -- guitar

10. W.C. Handy
Won't you look down over me
Yeah, I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be

Walking in Memphis -- Marc Cohn -- piano

11. There's a place up ahead and I'm going
Just as fast as my feet can fly
Come away, come away if you're going
Leave the sinking ship behind

Up Around the Bend -- Creedence Clearwater Revival -- banjo

12. Guess who eats together
At the Carnegie Deli
Bowser from Sha Na Na
And Arthur Fonzarelli

The Hanukkah song -- Adam Sandler -- accordion

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that mentions a musical instrument somewhere in its lyrics (but not title), and name the instrument for 3 total points.

Dance to the Music -- Sly and the Family Stone -- horns

Image Bonus: Play for me...

Spoiler

I had to take my mom to the hospital yesterday, so I was too wiped to even get online. It's always a huge production, but even more so now with all of the Covid protocols you have to go through.
So there will be no time for comments and musing and all that. Yeah, let's see if I can just make a straight answer post...ha!

1. Just come on back
If you ever wanna try again
I done told you once, you son of a bitch (or gun)
I'm the best there's ever been

Devil Went Down to Georgia - Charlie Daniels Band - Fiddle

Summer of 79, ugh! We went on a road trip to Tennessee and if the damn radio wasn't playing Coca-Cola Cowboy, it was playing Devil Went Down to Georgia. Hence, I love almost every single song CDB did....except for this one. I also love CBD, but that's a whole 'nother story...

2. Jump up and down and move it all around
Shake your head to the sound
Put your hand on the ground
Take one step left and one step right
One to the front and one to the side

Mambo No. 5 - Lou Bega - trumpet

I just heard this in an advert the other day, still love it!

3. Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music
Getting in the swing
You come to look for a King

Dancing Queen - ABBA - tambourine

not sure about the instrument, but it rhymes with queen so let's throw it against the wall and see if it sticks

4. Now shes moving all around the tables luring all in sight
But I know that she cannot see me hidden by the light
Closer closer she is getting nearer, soon she'll be in reach
As I enter into her spotlight, she stands lost for speech.

Stop! Stop! Stop! - The Hollies - cymbals

Hey, you could have used this for a theme game of songs with punctuation in them! And, as we all know (don't we?) this song vies with Kerry Ann as my fave Hollies song...

5. It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers, wild gamblers
That's all in the past

Saxophone

6. The old man said to me
Said, you can`t change
The world single handedly
Raise a glass enjoy the scenery

Saxophone

7. Luther croons
Sly's the original originator
James screams
Marvin was the only innovator

When Smokey Sings - ABC - violin

Thanks for the assist! Even though I like that song, this verse and the chorus are the only words I know.

8. Got a beat up glove
A homemade bat
And a brand new pair of shoes

Centerfield - John Fogarty - Drums

Put me in coach, I don't smoke!

9. Deep down Louisiana
Close to New Orleans
Way back up in the woods
Among the evergreens

Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry - guitar

Ha! Shooting Star was going through my head all day Sunday night and yesterday, so I got all happy when I read the theme because I could krox it....thanks for crushing my dream. Even though I knew the odds of you not grabbing the low hanging fruit were slim and none...and none just left town... I'm still going to demand prescient points!!!!1

10. W.C. Handy
Won't you look down over me
Yeah, I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be

Walking in Memphis - Marc Cohn - piano

11. There's a place up ahead and I'm going
Just as fast as my feet can fly
Come away, come away if you're going
Leave the sinking ship behind

Up Around the Bend - Creedence Clearwater Revival - banjo

How'm I doing with the no commenting thing?

12. Guess who eats together
At the Carnegie Deli
Bowser from Sha Na Na
And Arthur Fonzarelli

The Hanukkah Song - Adam Sandler - harmonica

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that mentions a musical instrument somewhere in its lyrics (but not title), and name the instrument for 3 total points.

Me and Bobby McGee - Kris Kristofferson - harpoon

It's not a harmonica, it's a harpoon! And Veronica is nowhere near it.

Image Bonus: Play for me...

Image

Since my grandfather was a professional trombone player, but the only krox I could come up with also mentions a saxophone so I'll shove it in here). My grandma actually had a newspaper article with a picture of him playing with Glenn Miller, but I haven't been able to find it since she passed.

1. Just come on back
If you ever wanna try again

The Devil Went Down To Georgia - Charlie Daniels Band - Fiddle

2. Jump up and down and move it all around
Shake your head to the sound
Put your hand on the ground
Take one step left and one step right
One to the front and one to the side
Mambo #5 - Lou Bega - Trumpet (While everyone else is calling out all the girls' names, I was always shouting "The TRUMPET!!!")

3. Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music
Getting in the swing
You come to look for a King
Dancing Queen - Abba - Tambourine (A very Mecca earworm of 2020, and the song that inspired this game)

4. Now shes moving all around the tables luring all in sight
But I know that she cannot see me hidden by the light
Closer closer she is getting nearer, soon she'll be in reach
As I enter into her spotlight, she stands lost for speech.
Stop! Stop! Stop! - Hollies - Cymbals

5. It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers, wild gamblers
That's all in the past
Deacon Blues - Steely Dan - Saxophone (This is one of my SD faves, but every time I use it, I realize I don't recognize any of the lyrics outside of the first line or the chorus...)

6. The old man said to me
Said, you can`t change
The world single handedly
Raise a glass enjoy the scenery
Life In One Day - Howard Jones - Flute

7. Luther croons
Sly's the original originator
James screams
Marvin was the only innovator
When Smokey Sings - ABC - Violins (See #3, and for some reason, Smokey Robinson does not make me think of violins...)

8. Got a beat up glove
A homemade bat
And a brand new pair of shoes
Centerfield - John Fogarty - Drum

9. Deep down Louisiana
Close to New Orleans
Way back up in the woods
Among the evergreens
Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry - Guitar (I was damn near finished with this game when I realized I'd neglected to include one of the thousand guitar songs out there. Otherwise, this song probably leads off...)

10. W.C. Handy
Won't you look down over me
Yeah, I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be
Walking in Memphis - Marc Cohn - Piano

11. There's a place up ahead and I'm going
Just as fast as my feet can fly
Come away, come away if you're going
Leave the sinking ship behind
Up Around The Bend - CCR - Banjo (It did not even occur to me until now that I'd included CCR and John Fogarty in the same game...)

12. Guess who eats together
At the Carnegie Deli
Bowser from Sha Na Na
And Arthur Fonzarelli
The Chanukah Song - Adam Sandler - Harmonica

JJC Points:

Weasel gets 3 JJC points for the dobro, which I nearly included (because I love that song), and for an angelic ursine...

frank gets 3 JJC points for being an editor, and for his favorite MTV icon...

Vandal gets a JJC point for Morticia on the harp...

Panic gets a JJC point for the late Mr. Van Halen...

Beebs gets a supermax for instruments of mass destruction...

TBone gets 3 JJC points for Pat Boone and tubadave's college days...

Krox gets 2 JJC points (and full image bonus credit) for mistaking the Shithouse Rats' signature for the IB question...

melly gets a JJC point for the poor orchestra...

Bob gets 2 JJC points for slapstick piano...

mrk gets 3 JJC points for the brass section meeting the woodwinds...

Earl gets a supermax for extraneous diarrh.... comments, Charlie Daniels Band oil, and for Trombone Shorty, who I hope is some relation to Crewcut Shorty...

Sprots gets a JJC points for playing a reverse keyboard backwards...

Be sure to check your points! I'm notoriously bad at remembering when I assign extra points to Kroxes and sometimes just automatically go for two...

Points:

Weasel 28+3
frank 32+3
Vandal 29+1
Panic 26+1
Beebs 0+5
TBone 35+3+5
Saucy 4

Seriously, lb??? You get negative JJC points for not knowing the difference between Morticia Addams and Lily Munster...

Ahhh, crazy old 60s sitcoms in B&W because they'd look ridiculous otherwise. Such heady times we lived in back then....

Fanny Fun Fact: The reason Billy Wilder shot Some Like It Hot in B&W was because Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis looked so egregious in colour that suspension of disbelief was impossible...
