RIP Tab

Coca-cola is discontinuing its original diet soda, Tab, along with several other underperforming brands by the end of the year. Since the introduction of Diet Coke and, later, Coke Zero, sales of Tab have been minimal. The biggest benefit to keeping Tab really has been to deny shelf space in groceries to competing soda brands.

I was recently surprised to discover that Tab still existed.

I had a boss who was a big fan of Tab, to the point that she kept several 12-packs in her office because the building vending machines didn't carry it. She will be very sad to hear this announcement.

The last time I saw a can of Tab was when me and my Dad used to collect aluminum cans for recycling when I was a kid. This was at least 30 years ago.

Coke's third class citizen to Pepsi and Dr. Pepper where I live anyway, so maybe they never bothered to sell it here after Diet Coke became a thing...

So will I now be more or less confusing when I travel to the Lou's Cafe in 1955?

One of my first jobs had a Coke machine in the employee break room, and Tab was the only sugar free drink in it. I didn't drink coffee and there was no microwave or hot plate for tea. So I drank 3 or 4 Tabs a week for a while.

"Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" had a "Not my job" quiz about Tab this week (it was a clip from a previous show). According to the show, the marketing director for Coca-Cola said "If God had intended Tab to have saccharine, he would have made it that way." Also, Coca-Cola produced a "Tab Clear" that was expressly made terrible so that it would destroy the rival "Pepsi Clear".
