Game #202: Let’s Make Some Music

Identify the 75 songs in the clues below. Then, match them into 40 pairs according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. Five songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity.

1. I sat on a rug, biding my time,
Drinking her wine.
We talked until two and then she said,
"It's time for bed."

2. On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.

3. And the days go by
Like a strand in the wind
In the web that is my own
I begin again.
Said to my friend, “Baby,
Nothin' else mattered.”

4. Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town.
As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down.
So please don't give a thought to me, I'm really doin' fine,
You can always find me here, I'm havin' quite a time.

5. My thoughts are with you,
Holding hands with your heart to see you,
Only blue talk and love,
Remember how we knew love was here to stay?

6. Before the breathin' air is gone,
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time,
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back somethin' worth rememberin'.

7. Cat's foot iron claw,
Neurosurgeons scream for more
At paranoia's poison door.

8. Is the poverty bringing you down?
Is the mailman jerking you 'round?
Did he put your million dollar check
In someone else's box?

9. Standing in the sunlight laughing,
Hiding behind a rainbow's wall,
Slipping and sliding
All along the waterfall with you.

10. Do you have the time to listen to me whine
About nothing and everything all at once?

11. Don't want to be a fool for you,
Just another player in your game for two.

12. You say Rolls, I say Royce,
You say God give me a choice.
You say Lord, I say Christ,
I don't believe in Peter Pan,
Frankenstein or Superman.

13. Take it, whip it, intermission, let the birds fly (brrr),
I get money, tunnel vision through my third eye (money).
In that skillet, watch me flip it like it's Five Guys (flip it).
Look at my pilgrim, check out the ceiling, look at the blue sky.

14. I don't need to fall at your feet
Just 'cause you cut me to the bone
And I won't miss the way that you kiss me.
We were never carved in stone.

15. Thursday morning was a hot flash-factor,
Her face still focused in my mind,
Test-strip, proof-sheet love is hard to find.
Friday night we'll dance the spotlight grind,
Stop-time heart for me if she's not mine.

16. Blue sky, sunshine,
Flowers bloomin', children sayin' hello.
Row boats, bird notes,
People smilin' ev'rywhere that they go.

17. Hey Satan, paid my dues
Playing in a rocking band!
Hey mama, look at me,
I'm on my way to the promised land.

18. I remember when,
I remember, I remember when I lost my mind.
There was something so pleasant about that place,
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space.

19. But don’t change a hair for me,
Not if you care for me.

20. Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine.

21. Late that night I park my car,
Stake my place in the singles bar.
Face to face, toe to toe,
Heart to heart as we hit the floor.

22. The King of kings is drawing near,
The Savior of the world is here;
Life and salvation doth He bring,
Wherefore rejoice and gladly sing.

23. I feel inclined to blow my mind,
Get hung up, feed the ducks with a bun.
They all come out to groove about.
Be nice and have fun in the sun.

24. One day a mother went to a prison
To see an erring but precious son.
She told the warden how much she loved him.
It did not matter what he had done.

25. So we started to dance.
In my arms she felt so inviting
And I just couldn't resist
Just one little kiss, so exciting.

26. Gold watch, diamond ring,
I ain't missin' not a single thing.
Cufflinks, stick pin,
When I step out I'm gonna do you in.

27. She has many guises,
She'll do what you want her to.
Playing dead and sweet submission,
Cracks the whip deadpan on cue.

28. Cars full of motors, painted green,
Mouths full of chocolate-covered cream.

29. Stay with me.
My love, I hope you'll always be
Right here by my side if ever I need you,
Oh my love.

30. The Way That I Want to Touch You

31. There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea.
You became the light on the dark side of me.

32. I say goodbye to all my sorrows
And by tomorrow I'll be on my way.

33. There's a little gold ring you wear on your hand
Makes me understand
There's another before me, you'll never be mine,
I'm wasting my time.

34. Baby, hold me tight
'Cause you can make it right,
You can shoot me straight to the top,
Give me love and take all I got to give.

35. Now this hot girl, she's not your average girl,
She's a morpharotic dream from a magazine
And she's so fine designed to blow your mind,
She's a dominatrix supermodel beauty queen.

36. It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow.
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lennon's on sale again.

37. I made a mixtape straight out of '94,
I've got your ripped skinny jeans lying on the floor,
And I know now
That I'm so down.

38. I'll wait in the queue when the trains come back,
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves.

39. Out there in the spotlight you're a million miles away,
Every ounce of energy you try to give away
As the sweat pours out your body like the music that you play.

40. And you'll see daffodils peepin’ over the hills
Or a honey lovin' mama bear.
You just take a left at the bridge,
Go down to Quakerforn Ridge,
And in a minute you're there.

41. Sometimes I get the feelin'
She's watchin' over me,
And other times I feel like I should go,
And through it all, the rise and fall
The bodies in the streets,
And when you're gone, we want you all to know
We'll carry on.

42. From the fields there comes the breath of new mown hay.
Through the sycamore the candle lights are gleaming.

43. Oh I know
That the music is fine
Like sparkling wine.
Go and have your fun.
Laugh and sing
But while we're apart,
Don't give your heart
To anyone.

44. Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his … chest.

45. People around every corner,
They seem to smile and say,
“We don't care what your name is, boy,
We'll never turn you away.”

46. They knew all the right people,
They took all the right pills,
They threw outrageous parties,
They paid heavenly bills.

47. Now think of all the years you tried to
Find someone to satisfy you.
I might be as crazy as you say.
If I'm crazy then it's true
That it's all because of you
And you wouldn't want me any other way.

48. Well I tried to make it Sunday, but I got so damn depressed
That I set my sights on Monday and I got myself undressed.

49. You see a lot more meanness in the city,
It's the kind that eats you up inside,
Hard to come away with anything that feels like dignity,
Hard to get home with any pride.

50. So messed up, I want you here
In my room, I want you here
Now we're gonna be face-to-face
And I'll lay right down in my favorite place.

51. All my dreams came true last night,
All my hopes and fears,
All my dreams came true once more
In tears, in tears.

52. This city desert makes you feel so cold,
It's got so many people, but it's got no soul.

53. They burned down the gambling house,
It died with an awful sound.
Funky Claude was running in and out
Pulling kids out the ground.

54. I spent the evening with the radio,
Regret the moment that I let you go.
Our quarrel was such a way of learnin' so much,
I know now that I love you 'cause I need your touch.

55. Tell me, what am I gonna do?
'Cause it's always been you to dry my tears,
It's always been you to wash away my fears,
It's always been you each night and day.
Now what can I say when love slips away?

56. I can't get any rest,
People say I'm obsessed.
Everything you say is lies,
But to me that's no surprise.
What I had for you was true.
Things go wrong, they always do.

57. The exodus is here,
The happy ones are near,
Let's get together before we get much older.

58. And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get Him to swap our places.

59. I got a box of maple sugar on my birthday.
In March I got a grey mackinaw.
And once I got some grapefruit from Tampa.
Montgom'ry Ward sent me a bathtub and a cross cut saw.

60. I don't want you to tell me just what you intend to do now,
'Cause how many times do I have to tell you, darlin', darlin',
I'm still in love with you now?

61. He has died for those oppressed,
Leaving her his last request.

62. High blood drumming on your skin, it's so tight,
You feel my heat, I'm just a moment behind.

63. Trick or treat, sweet to eat
On Halloween and New Year's Eve,
Yankee girls you just can't be beat
But you're the best when you're off your feet.

64. You sheltered me from harm,
Kept me warm, kept me warm.
You gave my life to me,
Set me free, set me free.
The finest years I ever knew
Were all the years I had with you.

65. Give me a second,
I need to get my story straight.
My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State.

66. The smile from your lips brings the summer sunshine,
Tears from your eyes bring the rain,
I feel your touch, your warm embrace,
And I'm in heaven again. The smile from your lips brings the summer sunshine
Tears from your eyes bring the rain
I feel your touch, your warm embrace
And I'm in heaven again

67. I'm gonna keep my sheep suit on
Until I'm sure that you've been shown
That I can be trusted walking with you alone.

68. We've been through this such a long, long time
Just tryin' to kill the pain, ooh yeah,
But love is always coming and love is always going
And no one's really sure who's lettin' go today,
Walking away.

69. I got real bored on a Friday night, I couldn't find a damn thing to do.
So I pulled out a suit about the same color as my BMW.

70. A week without you,
Thought I'd forget.
Two weeks without you and I
Still haven't gotten over you yet.

71. I've been running hot,
You got me ticking, going to blow my top.

72. Yeah, my mama, she told me, "Don't worry about your size."
She ssaid, "Boys like a little more booty to hold at night."
You know I won't be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll
So if that's what you're into, then go 'head and move along.

73. You've got gall, you've got guile,
Step to me, I'm a rap-o-phile.
If you want to battle you're in denial,
Comin' from Uranus to check my style.

74. Painted wings and giant's rings make way for other toys.

75. If you should ever leave me,
Though life would still go on, believe me,
The world could show nothing to me,
So what good would living do me?

OK, let's see here. First, a couple of corrections and adding the artists to several songs that were correctly identified:

28. Everyone's Gone To The Moon is by JONATHAN KING.
32. Correct title is I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City and it's by NILSSON.
34. Fame is by IRENE CARA
36. Life On Mars? is by DAVID BOWIE (question mark is actually part of the title, don't know if that's significant or not)
40. Indian Lake is by THE COWSILLS.
43. Save The Last Dance For Me....Has been done by many but the first, and probably most successful, was by THE DRIFTERS.
56. She Drives Me Crazy is by FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS.
66. My Special Angel is by either BOBBY HELMS or THE VOGUES. The former is the original, the latter the very popular remake.
70. Vacation is by THE GO-GO's.
71. is definitely START ME UP by THE ROLLING STONES.

Now, let's see what else I can come up with:

2. IMMIGRANT SONG-LED ZEPPELIN
3. EDGE OF SEVENTEEN-STEVIE NICKS
5. SEPTEMBER-EARTH, WIND AND FIRE
7. 21ST CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN-KING CRIMSON. NICE!!!
20. SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND-PINK FLOYD
21. LOVE IS THE DRUG-ROXY MUSIC
23. ITCHYCOO PARK-SMALL FACES
29. FOLLOW YOU FOLLOW ME-GENESIS
30. Was this an error? If you inadvertently gave us the title, the artist is THE CAPTAIN AND TENNILLE.
38. WHITE ROOM-CREAM
41. WELCOME TO THE BLACK PARADE-MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE
49. SUNSET GRILL-DON HENLEY
55. LONELY NIGHTS (ANGEL FACE)-THE CAPTAIN AND TENNILLE
58. RUNNING UP THAT HILL-KATE BUSH. Double Nice!!!!
64. EVERYTHING I OWN-BREAD
"#$%&@*&"-Donald F. Duck

First consolidation…

Identify the 75 songs in the clues below. Then, match them into 40 pairs according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. Five songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity.

1. I sat on a rug, biding my time,
Drinking her wine.
We talked until two and then she said,
"It's time for bed."
NORWEGIAN WOOD (THIS BIRD HAS FLOWN) - BEATLES

2. On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.
IMMIGRANT SONG - LED ZEPPELIN

3. And the days go by
Like a strand in the wind
In the web that is my own
I begin again.
Said to my friend, “Baby,
Nothin' else mattered.”
EDGE OF SEVENTEEN - STEVIE NICKS

4. Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town.
As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down.

You can always find me here, I'm havin' quite a time.
COUNTIN FLOWERS ON THE WALL - STATLER BROTHERS

5. My thoughts are with you,
Holding hands with your heart to see you,
Only blue talk and love,
Remember how we knew love was here to stay?
SEPTEMBER - EARTH, WIND AND FIRE

Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time,
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back somethin' worth rememberin'.

7. Cat's foot iron claw,
Neurosurgeons scream for more
At paranoia's poison door.
21ST CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN - KING CRIMSON

8. Is the poverty bringing you down?
Is the mailman jerking you 'round?
Did he put your million dollar check
In someone else's box?

I don't know how this happened, but the version that got posted here does not reflect a final change that's on the version I have on my computer.

THESE are the lyrics that should be at #55:

When ya got a girl who takes her time
You must slow the pace you can't mess with her mind
If she feels the same she'll letcha know
Just prepare yourself or be ready to go

42. is definitely Indiana's state song. The complete title is ON THE BANKS OF THE WABASH, FAR AWAY. The composer is Paul Dresser, in case that becomes important.

The happy ones are near,
Let's get together before we get much older.
BABA O'REILLY?

Updating the consolidation to see where we stand. It may (or may not) be significant to know that Song #55 was originally "Lonely Nights (Angel Face)" by Captain & Tennille before the final edit...

Identify the 75 songs in the clues below. Then, match them into 40 pairs according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover for yourself. Five songs will be used twice, each time in a different capacity.

1. I sat on a rug, biding my time,
Drinking her wine.
We talked until two and then she said,
"It's time for bed."
NORWEGIAN WOOD (THIS BIRD HAS FLOWN) - BEATLES

2. On we sweep with threshing oar,
Our only goal will be the western shore.
IMMIGRANT SONG - LED ZEPPELIN

3. And the days go by
Like a strand in the wind
In the web that is my own
I begin again.
Said to my friend, “Baby,
Nothin' else mattered.”
EDGE OF SEVENTEEN - STEVIE NICKS

4. Last night I dressed in tails, pretended I was on the town.
As long as I can dream it's hard to slow this swinger down.
So please don't give a thought to me, I'm really doin' fine,
You can always find me here, I'm havin' quite a time.
COUNTIN FLOWERS ON THE WALL - STATLER BROTHERS

5. My thoughts are with you,
Holding hands with your heart to see you,
Only blue talk and love,
Remember how we knew love was here to stay?
SEPTEMBER - EARTH, WIND AND FIRE

6. Before the breathin' air is gone,
Before the sun is just a bright spot in the night-time,
Out where the rivers like to run
I stand alone and take back somethin' worth rememberin'.
OUT IN THE COUNTRY - THREE DOG NIGHT

7. Cat's foot iron claw,
Neurosurgeons scream for more
At paranoia's poison door.
21ST CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN - KING CRIMSON

8. Is the poverty bringing you down?
Is the mailman jerking you 'round?
Did he put your million dollar check
In someone else's box?

9. Standing in the sunlight laughing,
Hiding behind a rainbow's wall,
Slipping and sliding
All along the waterfall with you.

About nothing and everything all at once?

11. Don't want to be a fool for you,
Just another player in your game for two.

You say God give me a choice.
You say Lord, I say Christ,
I don't believe in Peter Pan,
Frankenstein or Superman.

Look at my pilgrim, check out the ceiling, look at the blue sky.

Stop-time heart for me if she's not mine.

Some of these group names have been identified in forms I hoped they wouldn't - but it doesn't affect the validity of the Tangredi, just its elegance.

After 17 days, I doubt there's much chance of anyone else stepping in to identify the unknowns. Frank's comment on groups has me curious to see what else is hiding in this puzzle, since there are some rather unique acts among what we already have...

13. Take it, whip it, intermission, let the birds fly (brrr),
I get money, tunnel vision through my third eye (money).
In that skillet, watch me flip it like it's Five Guys (flip it).
Look at my pilgrim, check out the ceiling, look at the blue sky.

STIR FRY - MIGOS

35. Now this hot girl, she's not your average girl,
She's a morpharotic dream from a magazine
And she's so fine designed to blow your mind,
She's a dominatrix supermodel beauty queen.

LIQUID DREAMS - O-TOWN

37. I made a mixtape straight out of '94,
I've got your ripped skinny jeans lying on the floor,
And I know now
That I'm so down.

SHE LOOKS SO PERFECT - 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER

55. When ya got a girl who takes her time
You must slow the pace you can't mess with her mind
If she feels the same she'll letcha know
Just prepare yourself or be ready to go

COOL IT NOW - NEW EDITION (I should feel embarrassed, but other than the Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike part of the rap, I never did pay much attention to this song)

Some technical things that might relate to Frank's comment:

8. Pop Life was credited to Prince and the Revolution

11. NSYNC has been billed as 'N Sync and *NSYNC according to Wikipedia

To me, though, the most likely candidate is that a lot of these bands are listed without a leading "the" -- like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, etc. If this is it, it might be a huge clue to the Tangredi, as well.

Prince and the Revolution adds another "X and the Y" band to the decent number that are already in the game.

I thought I might have had it when I started focusing on the odd songs, like On the Banks of the Wabash.... but there's no Little River Band song in the game.
