According to multiple reports, the Mountain West conference is about to throw in the towel on fall sports, including football.
The MWC has made it official. As of now, Brigham Young, which is an independent, still says it will play this year, even though they only have three games remaining after the MWC and earlier cancellations. Army is also hurting (they have only four games left on their schedule). Navy lost Air Force and Notre Dame, but they play in the AAC, which, as of now, is still playing.

Another question is whether and how many bowl games will be played. There are as of now 44 bowls scheduled this year and only 104 FBS schools that haven't canceled. I doubt we're going to be seeing a couple of 3-7 teams playing in Boise, ID.

The University of Massachusetts, which plays football as an independent and had been scheduled to play fellow independent U Conn this season, has canceled fall sports, including football.

Add independent U Mass to the list of schools opting out of fall sports. (At least this doesn't add another hole in the ACC schedule).

FCS powerhouse JMU also punted on the season over the weekend, and FCS newcomer North Alabama (Big South conference) has shut down their practices. This was partially because of several players having to quarantine due to COVID and other players being worried about the ramifications of playing in the upcoming season.

EDIT: Corrected the level of play for JMU and UNA. I miss the simpler 1-A and 1-AA designations.

James Madison is an FCS school. When their conference shut down, they said that they would still play this fall, but with the FCS playoffs being canceled and it becoming increasingly unlikely that they can fill out any meaningful schedule, they are calling it quits as well.

And now it's official. The B1G 10 has cancelled their football season.

And, since the PAC-12 and B1G 10 are always in lockstep, expect the PAC-12 to throw in the towel in the next day or two.

The Pac 12 has gone farther than any other conference I know canceling all sports until the end of the year. That means approximately 1/3 of men's and women's basketball seasons. This would pretty much wipe out their entire non-conference schedules (I assume that they could reschedule a conference game or two if need be during January or February).

On the FCS front, the Big South Conference has cancelled its season; member North Alabama has said it will try to have a four-game season.

The Washington Football Team has announced that there will be no fans in the stands this season.

The Big 12 just announced that it will continue with football with a 9 + 1 schedule. Conference play starts 9/26 with two bye weeks built into the schedule for each team. No non-conference games were listed, but they would presumably be played before 9/26 or during one of the open dates on that team's schedule. Texas/Oklahoma will still be played in the Cotton Bowl.

The Southland Conference, an FCS conference with schools in Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, has canceled its fall football conference schedule but said that individual schools could still play if they wanted. Presumably, some of those schools might be "plus-ones" on Big 12 or other conference schedules that still allow for non-conference games. It's hard to see a school keeping its football program open for two or three games, and, as a practical matter, except for the Big 12 and ACC, a team in any other conference that schedules them wouldn't be that lucrative of a payday, especially considering the smaller crowd size for any games that are likely to be played.

In other COVID news, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says that there will be fans in the stands for Cowboys home games this year. Also, Nebraska has dropped its discussions about possibly playing football this season outside the Big 10. Also, New Mexico State, another school that planned to play as an FBS independent this year, has canceled its season after it shrank to a maximum of four possible games. The Big South Conference is allowing schools to schedule up to four non-conference games if they want, even though the conference season is off. One Big South school, Northern Alabama, says it plans to play in November at Brigham Young. Presumably, it or other Big South schools could wind up on ACC schedules this season as well.

Ironically, North Alabama was scheduled to play an ACC team, Virginia Tech, until that got cancelled with the new ACC schedule. Maybe they'll fill in for one of the five openings now on the ACC calendar.

And add the Southern Conference to the list of FCS conferences throwing in the towel for the fall; it, like other conferences at this level, are hoping to play in the spring. This leaves the Ohio Valley Conference as the only FCS conference still officially open for fall ball.

This also blows up another plus-one game for the ACC, which now has 6 games disappear.

EDIT: Make that possibly two more of the plus-one games or maybe none. I was thinking of the Virginia-VMI game, but it also impacts the Florida State-Samford game. Then again, the SoCon teams might opt to play independently of the conference and still play those games.

EDIT PART TWO: Samford and VMI have both opted not to play their non-conference games, so the ACC is officially up to seven plus-one games with opponents TBD.

The NCAA has now officially canceled fall championships in all Division I sports. This affects 22 sports. The only exception is FBS football, whose championship is not determined by the NCAA. Schools and conferences at both the FBS and FCS levels can continue playing regular season games, however.

And now the last FCS conference, the Ohio Valley Conference, is going on the delay-until-spring bus, though it says member schools can schedule up to four non-conference games.

The St. Louis Cardinals took a bus up to Chicago to play the White Sox today in their first game since July 29, thanks to multiple players testing positive. In some sort of karmic balancing of the baseball scales, the Cincinnati Reds games this weekend with Pittsburgh have been called off due to one of the Reds players testing positive.

Actually not a bus trip, more like a caravan of 41 rental cars.

It looks like the SEC is going to totally blow up the schedule, based upon their teaser of week one. None of these games were scheduled previously for the week of 9/26, and four of the seven consist of the newly added crossover games.

Bama @ Mizzou
Florida @ Ole Miss
Georgia @ Arkansas
Kentucky @ Auburn
Miss State @ LSU
Tenn @ So Carolina
Texas A&M @ Vandy

On the surface, the only one of these games that I would consider competitive would be the Tennessee - SoCarolina game. But this is a weird year, with limited training, so who knows?

The rest of the schedule will get released tonight at 7pm ET.
