Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

California joins in:

A group of 'furries' stopped a domestic violence assault and helped police make the arrest
(CNN)Several members attending a furry convention in California on Friday helped restrain a man who was assaulting his girlfriend until police arrested him, according to officials.

Six people witnessed the assault at the annual Further Confusion, or FurCon, in San Jose. Furries are enthusiasts who celebrate characters and stories involving anthropomorphic animals, or fictitious characters that have human traits.
They said the man was assaulting a woman in a car, the San Jose Police Department said in a police report.

Robbie Ryans, 26, was working as a DJ for the convention when he and a friend went outside for a smoke break. "Out of nowhere," Ryans said a blue car stopped in front of them.

"We heard a woman's screams coming from inside and saw the passenger throwing full fists at whoever was driving." Ryans told CNN. "We got up and ran towards the car, my friend pulled open the door and we both held onto the attacker. The girl driver was yelling for him to get out, as he started trying to fight us off."

Hello from the Show Me State...

Meth-Addled Carjacker Kidnaps Man and Goat From Missouri Porn Store

In what is surely an early contender for "most Mad-Libs-ian crime of the 2020s," a meth-addled Oklahoma carjacker is in custody after abducting a man and his pet goat from outside of a porn store in Missouri this week.

(In other words: We're only two days into 2020 and already it's become clear that the surrealist through-the-looking-glass bullshit that permeated the tail end of the 2010s will be following us into the new decade. Great.)

The Kansas City Star reports that the incident happened in the early hours of New Year's Day, when two men and a goat traveling by pickup parked outside of an adult video store in Carthage, Missouri, about four hours southwest of St. Louis.

One of the men went inside the store, while the goat and its owner slept in the truck. When that man awoke, according to KOTV in Tulsa, he found that a carjacker had stolen the vehicle and was pointing a gun at his head.

Brandon Kirby, 40, then allegedly drove the truck through three states — Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma — while doing meth and pistol-whipping his frightened passenger. According to police, Kirby eventually let the man and the goat out of the truck in Creek County, Oklahoma, where the man promptly called 911.

Police were able to contact the truck's OnStar service to track the vehicle and slow it down to about 15 miles per hour, KOTV reports, and they subsequently used stop sticks to puncture the truck's tires in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. After a trooper rammed the vehicle into a ditch, Kirby reportedly fled the truck on foot.

Police say he dropped a mask and a gun while he was running, which they recovered. Kirby was found hiding in some tall grass near a drainage ditch after a brief pursuit on foot.

Kirby was charged with kidnapping, pointing firearms and felony possession of a firearm, according to The Kansas City Star. KOTV reports that Kirby had recently been released from prison, and was wanted in Osage County for second-degree burglary.

"OK 2020, it only took you 4.5 hours to get weird," the Sand Springs Police Department said on Facebook. "Let's slow down on the carjacking-goatnapping calls for the remainder of the year."

No word on the status of that poor goat.

You'll find goats in most Missouri porn shops. But you'll have to pay a quarter to get a peep at them....

Just down the road a spell...

They met on a dating app. Then he robbed a bank on their first date and forced her to be the getaway driver
(CNN)And you thought your worst first date story was bad.
A Massachusetts woman became an unexpected getaway driver after a man she met on a dating app robbed a bank on their first date.
Christopher Castillo, the unnamed woman's would-be Robin Hood, plead guilty this week to armed robbery and three counts of assault and battery on a police officer — all committed on their first date on December 5, 2016 — according to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.
Castillo was sentenced to three years in state prison for the robbery, plus two years in the Bristol County House of Corrections for violently struggling against and spitting on police who tried to subdue him, according to the district attorney's office.

The woman wasn't charged — the "worst date ever" story was enough punishment.

Roving band of herpes-ridden monkeys now roaming northeast Florida
A roving band of feral, herpes-ridden monkeys is roaming across northeast Florida.

The STD-addled rhesus macaques had previously been confined to Silver Springs State Park near Ocala, Florida, but are now being spotted miles away in Jacksonville, St. Johns, St. Augustine, Palatka, Welaka and Elkton, Florida, according to a local ABC affiliate, First Coast News.

Even more worrying: Over a quarter of the 300 feral macaques — an invasive species native to South and Southeast Asia — carry herpes B, according to a 2018 survey, National Geographic reported.

Florida shoplifter clogs toilets to distract store workers
MARION COUNTY, Fla. (CBS12) - Deputies say a woman used an unusual tactic to shoplift from a store in central Florida.

According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the woman clogged the toilets at a Family Dollar store to distract store workers as she walked out with more than $400 worth of store merchandise.

Deputies said the woman packed laundry bins with goodies, before going to the bathroom to do her business there. As the clerks went to investigate the bathroom issue, she slipped out the emergency door.

Investigators said she dumped all her stolen items in the trash.

The sheriff's office believes she had an accomplice. After dumping the items, she went to talk to someone in a dark-colored SUV. The driver pulled around to the back of the store as if to help gather all the stolen items from the dumpster.

When a store employee spotted the woman, she took off.

The sheriff's office is now looking for the woman.

Woman accused of leaving her boyfriend in a suitcase to die
WINTER PARK, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida have arrested a woman accused of zipping her boyfriend into a suitcase, recording his repeated cries for help and leaving him locked inside until he died, according to sheriff’s office documents.

Deputies with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office took Sarah Boone, 42, into custody on second-degree murder charges in the death of Jorge Torres Jr., 42, the agency said in a statement Tuesday.

Boone called 911 Monday afternoon from her Winter Park home and told dispatchers her boyfriend was dead, news outlets reported. Investigators said she claimed they had been drinking the night before and agreed it would be funny if Torres got into the suitcase during a game of hide-and-seek, according to court records obtained by news outlets.

Boone reportedly admitted she zipped Torres into the suitcase, went upstairs to bed and awoke the next morning to find him still inside and unresponsive, the documents alleged.

The sheriff’s office said Boone’s statements didn’t line up with video evidence found on her phone showing a blue suitcase facing downward with Torres trying to free himself. In the video, he called for help and yelled that he couldn’t breathe, authorities said.

Boone could be heard laughing and saying: “That’s what I feel like when you cheat on me,” investigators wrote in the documents.

I think it's an offshoot of the saying, "One death is a tragedy; a million is a statistic." At this point, there are about 2,000 deaths in the U.S. from the coronavirus and maybe 20-30,000 serious hospitalizations. So, the vast majority of people in this country don't know anyone who has had a health problem... yet. And it's easy to think that this is all just some kind of flu or something that's only a problem up in New York City. And as long as they are getting mixed messages from their officials, including the governor of Florida, it's easy for them to keep thinking that way. What they do understand is that they are out of work or they can't go to a bar or bowling alley or theater because of this coronavirus and that's something they can relate to easier than a relative handful of deaths of strangers.

Take another look at the picture and come up with a better explanation. I'm not saying that everyone feels that way; just enough to fill up a beach in Florida and a number of other places where there are still similar incidents going on.

Brunswick, GA, is about halfway between Savannah and Jacksonville, so it's very close to the Florida border, close enough to capture the Florida essence.
A [Brunswick] man allegedly became overzealous Saturday night while questioning a longtime friend’s commitment to Christianity, stabbing him 12 times with a screwdriver at home... Miraculously, the victim was released soon after being flown by helicopter to Savannah Memorial University Medical Center. The [victim] suffered stab wounds to the face, neck and abdomen.

[The suspect] and the victim have known each other for a long time, police said. The two apparently began arguing at a home in the 100 block of Fairman Avenue. Police found blood on the floor of the kitchen, which was in disarray, the report said. “He and the victim got into an argument over whether or not the victim was a Christian,” [a police spokesman] said. “It developed into a physical altercation, and Ronald Potter stabbed the victim 12 times. They’ve supposedly been friends for over 20 years.

I recall that, at one of these parties a few weeks ago, the planners (who had NO explosives experience) set off an explosion that was so big and powerful that it sent shrapnel through the Grandma-to-be, killing her.

Holy crap! It was in October, but it feels like it was a few weeks ago. This article also references another incident in AZ that may be the one that BJ mentioned:

A man in Florida encased his arms in barrels full of concrete outside the governor's mansion in Tallahassee on Friday in protest of the state's continuing to hold prisoners amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Tallahassee police arrested Jordan Mazurek, 28, around 10:30 a.m. after they cut him out of two 55-gallon drums of concrete that were connected by PVC pipe. Mazurek was first seen outside the mansion, where Florida Gov. Ron Desantis, a Republican, lives, at 6 a.m.

Mazurek wore a surgical mask and sat between the two black drums painted in white letters — one said "stop the massacre," while the other read "free prisoners now" — in protest of the living conditions of those who remain imprisoned amid the pandemic. At least four Florida inmates have died and thousands have been quarantined by the state, the News Service of Florida reported.
