John Brophy, longtime minor league hockey player and coach - though he did have stints with the Birmingham Bulls (WHA) and the Toronto Maple Leafs - has died at age 83. He had 1027 victories as a coach, second to Scotty Bowman.
He had an 18-year playing career in the Eastern Hockey League, accumulating almost 4000 penalty minutes, and was widely considered as the inspiration for Paul Newman's Reggie Dunlop character in Slap Shot.
