The Revenant

We saw The Revenant today. Observations:

1) This is the most brutal, savage movie I can recall seeing in a long time. Not necessarily the most violent, but, but the violence is so intense with people biting, kicking, and clawing at each other (not to mention DiCaprio getting attacked by a bear in an extended sequence).

2) It's a very good movie that might have been great if it hadn't gone for some mystic supernatural stuff involving DiCaprio seeing his dead wife in visions from time to time. Admittedly, a guy torn up as much as he was might well see things, but the film overdid it.

3) DiCaprio is good in the movie, but it's not his best work. However, this is the same situation Al Pacino was in when he won the Oscar. Everyone feels it's DiCaprio's turn and no one else had a blow-the-doors off performance that would dazzle the viewers.

4) Tom Hardy was better than DiCaprio, but he's probably going to get shut out at the Oscars once again. No one has as many excellent performances as him over the last 2-3 years and for various reasons, he's got nothing to show for it.

5) Having seen everything that's a possible Best Picture nominee now, if I had a vote, I'd vote for Spotlight as Best Picture.

Given my tastes-this movie is tops on my list to see-I have seen nothing bad about it. However, I suspect that I will be grinding my teeth throughout the movie on one count. His bear attack took place in northwest South Dakota near Lemmon and he crawled to Fort Kiowa on the Missouri River in south-central South Dakota.

My bet is that those sequences in the movie take place in more "Scenic" areas and probably do not use the Great Plains as a backdrop.

The Black Hills would grit my teeth also. I don't think he got even close to the Black Hills-he was hit in far northern south Dakota and headed east/southeast from there. His was a "Great Plains" adventure all the way.

Yes, I totally get why the film-makers would choose to film in more scenic/mountainous country.

I mentioned the Black Hills as being the highest area I'm familiar with in South Dakota. The setting of the movie definitely didn't have a "Great Plains" feel to it.

Now that I've read Bob's post, I'm really curious what scene was filmed in Tierra del Fuego.

As far as the family trip this year-we are going to California. Mrs. S is anal about going to California on the "6"s.

86-went between Jr and Sr year in high school-stayed with relatives for 3 weeks-was ready to move out there.

96-I got off easy-Crossed the Ca/Nv border for a few minutes in a rental car.

06-Big family trip.

16-Fly to San Fran-drive south.

Don't know if you saw my post or not, but that is our 2016 vacation. We are renting a house in Big Sky, a big house, for two families. We will base there for 5 days and visit Yellowstone, Glacier NP, and Grand Tetons.

Driving from Houston to Mt. Rushmore first, then over to Big Sky. Coming back by way of Utah and Los Alamos, NM.

BiT is already planning an epic "Griswold" vacation: 5 hours driving from Big Sky to Glacier NP, "there it is, kids, uh huh, uh huh," and 5 hours driving back to Big Sky on the same day.

I don't think he needs any more detours on this trip.

Not to walk in a cave. We've done caves. We would have done a spelunking tour of Carlsbad in 2014 with my son's Boy Scout troop had the Scoutmaster made the reservations sooner. By the time he got around to it only the standard public tour was available. The scouts opted to stay at Balmorhea State Park and swim that day while the Scoutmaster and I went and toured/hiked Ft. Davis.

Easy mistake-we are going to Yellowknife, NWT, not Yellowstone. We did that trip in 2014.

Be very cognizant of crowded conditions in visiting Glacier. Yellowstone tends to disperse crowds-Glacier confines crowds due to everybody being drawn to the central axis road. We visited during mid-July maximum crowds and we were all looking forward to stopping at the summit visitor center and walkning some trails and so forth. We absolutely could not find a place to park-either in the lot there or in the satellite lots about 1/4 mile away. We had to give up that idea.

Yes, I think so. That would be cool. This is mainly her trip-so I am just going along. We are flying this year instead of driving-we usually do the Great American Road Trip-but not this year. The only thing I have put my marker down on is that I want to visit Santa Maria-the birthplace of the tri-tip. She wants to do a day in San Fran-which I will go along with-drive along coast to LA. The 2 youngest want a day in Disneyland-they barely remember the 2006 visit. Our maid of honor lives in San Diego area so we will spend a day there-I would like to do the San Diego Zoo-but we will see.

To turn this back onto the original topic, at Glacier's east visitor center-I bought a couple of books on the Blackfeet-they were the nemesis of the early mountain men such as Hugh Glass.
