Based on what I heard on the radio this evening, I don't believe that his illness was public knowledge.

Most accounts today call it a "secret battle," but I have now found articles from the time of his previous album's release (2013) which indicate that health rumors were rampant at the time.

There will, of course, be tons of stories about him circulating now. I found this one interesting. The part of a James Bond villain was written with him in mind, but he (along with 2 other rock stars) turned it down. It was ultimately played by Christopher Walken.

I was stunned when I heard this today. Three days ago, he released a new album. Two days ago was his birthday. Then, boom...gone. Another musical icon of my youth has left the building.

I do recall, back in 2014 when he put out his first album in almost 10 years, that there were stories going around that he was in bad health, accounting for his low profile. But those stories were dismissed as exaggerating his issues, that he was basically fine.

Apparently not.

Most every band I was ever in played Suffragette City and Rebel Rebel. I can't say he's near the top of my favorite artists, but he is well represented in my cd collection and on my iPod. Starman and Heroes are particular favorites, along with the previous two mentioned.

RIP Ziggy Stardust/Major Tom/Thin White Duke/etc. etc. etc.

The entire sequence of that video was in each of the three Christmas CD's we played on loop at Mecca. The audio is burned in my brain, but that's the first time I got to see where it came from...

For any Bowie fans who haven't seen this movie, I would strongly recommend Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. It's the only Bowie role that I felt he was completely playing a character and not (as in the would-be Bond film), some version of himself.

Although I know the real Tesla was known as quite the eccentric, I thought that Bowie's portrayal of him in The Prestige was pretty straight up, more of a focused guy who was more trying to solve a problem (The Teleporter device), with a minor touch of reserved paranoia (justified because of Mr. Edison's minion's efforts). I didn't think of it as Bowie-esque, but thought he played it very well.

The Bloom County comic strip has a tribute running right now with Steve Dallas dressed like him. I'm so glad he brought the strip back and with him putting out on Facebook, he's free to print whatever he wants.
