Re: SSS won't like this story
First, I have no sympathy whatoever for the robber. Anyone who goes around robbing people at gunpoint certainly deserved what he got.
However, I'm not sure this was a lethal situation before the husband pulled his gun. That turned it into one and the husband wound up in the hospital with three bullets in him (if the gunman had been a better shot, there would be two or three dead bodies instead of one).
Admittedly, I wasn't there so I can't gauge what may or may not have happened to lead to the shootout, but in most situations like this. the likely result would have been the couple suffering the loss of whatever cash and valuables they had. Was the husband's life (or potentially both their lives) worth a few hundred dollars?

Everyone's worldview is correct with exactly one person... themselves.

Re: SSS won't like this story
You're making up a different story. Read it again. It clearly states, "Russell said the man took de Caro's briefcase over to the bed of the motel room and began firing at her husband." IANALEO, but I'd say being shot at is a lethal situation and that it occurred before either victim produced a weapon.silverscreenselect wrote:However, I'm not sure this was a lethal situation before the husband pulled his gun. You always ignore other potential results. Successful outcomes lead thieves to get emboldened and, often, more violent. Your handing over some money may lead to someone else losing their lives.silverscreenselect wrote:Admittedly, I wasn't there so I can't gauge what may or may not have happened to lead to the shootout, but in most situations like this. the likely result would have been the couple suffering the loss of whatever cash and valuables they had. Re: SSS won't like this story
That's her version of the story and of course she's not going to say anything that might get herself or her husband into trouble. It's just as possible that the hubby started to shoot first, or that the robber saw the husband pull his gun and started firing. You weren't there; I wasn't there. But when two people in a room have guns the odds of people getting shot goes up tremendously.Estonut wrote: Russell said the man took de Caro's briefcase over to the bed of the motel room and began firing at her husband."
Again, I've got no sympathy for the robber; he brought this whole situation on. But the husband might well have gotten himself and/or his wife killed trying to play hero.

SSS do you really not see the mental gymnastics you are going view to keep your view on guns intact?
Jesus, are you really that un-self-aware?
This was a successful thwarting of a potentially deadly crime because one of the potential victims was armed.
It happens. In real life.

This was a situation in which a man got shot three times (and probably had a few more bullets directed his way and his wife's way) to keep from being robbed.Jeemie wrote:

Police are still investigating the case as a potential homicide (which doesn't mean anyone will be charged). They've released the robber's name but no details about his criminal history. It's apparently a high crime area with 91 separate incidents within a one-mile radius of the motel within the last few months.

The NRA has an endless list of Armed Citizens protecting themselves. It generally appears as a 2-page spread in the magazine-but the above is a link to the online database.

It's too bad the list of accidental gun deaths is about 200 times longer than that.Spock wrote:https://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/armed-citizen/Jeemie wrote:SSS do you really not see the mental gymnastics you are going view to keep your view on guns intact?

You could probably compile a list like that of articles about people winning lottery jackpots. It wouldn't make buying lottery tickets a good investment.Spock wrote:

I wonder, how come the robber didn't notice the assault rifle? Maybe his ski mask was crooked. And why is that neighborhood called Nicetown?

Things change.Nicetown was named for Hans te Neues, a Mennonite immigrant who purchased the land of present-day Nicetown in 1699.

You could call the guy with the assault rifle a zimmerman, too.Hans and his descendants were well known as zimmermen (builders of houses).

Re: SSS won't like this story
Here's the arrest record for Tomorio Walton, the man who was shot. He was wanted for parole violations in Tennessee at the time of his death and it's currently unclear why he was in Albuquerque. Not surprisingly, he had accumulated quite a record in his 27 years on this planet, but based on this report, none of his arrests involved violence. I'm not doubting that Russell and her husband were afraid, but I still think there's a fair chance no one would have been hurt if the husband hadn't had a gun. This could easily have wound up with two or three dead bodies instead of one.

Given the background of the couple, I doubt they would trade your random "fair chance" to the "control your own destiny" in situations they were well trained in.

Getting three bullets in you is not exactly what I would call a good job of self defense. And my comment was specifically in response to the earlier quote that she looked into the guy's eyes and saw he was a killer. That wasn't borne out by his record.BackInTex wrote:Is that your standard of protecting your family? A fair chance? I wonder how the husband would have felt if one of the bullets flying around that room wound up in her head.
