August Lyrically Speaking Day 15: Pandora Friday

August Lyrically Speaking Day 15 – Pandora Friday

25 songs from my latest weekend with Pandora. The seed for the channel this time was Thomas Dolby, so this is like a trip down MTV memory lane. There are 4 instances of the same group being represented twice, and once where the same group is here three times (it’s not Thomas Dolby, either.) 1 point for title, one point for artist. We’ll even put a 2 point krox bonus on this one – what’s your favorite song (title and artist) from the decade of the 80s that is not on here?

1. "good heavens Miss Sakamoto - you're beautiful!"
I -
I don't believe it!
there she goes again!
she's tidied up, and I can't find anything!
all my tubes and wires
and careful notes"

2. I've seen you on the beach and I've seen you on TV
Two of a billion stars it means so much to me
Like a birthday or a pretty view
But then I'm sure that you know it's just for you

3. She'll be my mirror
Reflect what I am
A loser and a winner
The King of Siam
And my Siamese twin
Alone on the river
Mirror kisses
Mirror kisses

4. Stabilizers up, running perfect
Starting to collect, requested data
What will it effect, when all is done

5. Under the ruins of a walled city
Crumbling towers and beams of yellow light
No flags of truce, no cries of pity
The siege guns had been pounding all through the night

6. Too many shadows, whispering voices
Faces on posters, too many choices
If, when, why, what?
How much have you got?

7. Funny how I blind myself
I never knew
If I was sometimes played upon
Afraid to lose

8. Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am free again
Whenever I'm alone with you
You make me feel like I am clean again

9. There's emptiness behind their eyes, there's dust in all their hearts
They just want to steal us all and take us all apart, but not in

10. There's a pain
A famine in your heart
An aching to be free
Can't you see
All love's luxuries
Are here for you and me

11. What you gonna do when the Love burns down?
What you gonna do when the flames go up?
Who is gonna come and turn the tide?
What's it gonna take to make a dream survive?

12. The cloud is moving nearer still
Aurora Borealis comes in view
Aurora comes in view

13. Oh, things that you say
Is it a life or just to play my worries away?
You're all the things I've got to remember
You're shying away

14. I see you've sent my letters back
And my LP records and they're all scratched
I can't see the point in another day
When nobody listens to a word I say

15. 'Cause love's such an old-fashioned word
And love dares you to care for
The people on the edge of the night
And love dares you to change our way of
Caring about ourselves

16. And we're not little children
And we know what we want
And the future is certain
Give us time to work it out

17. The broadcast was spreading
Station to station
Like an infection
Across the nation

18. Lower the curtain down in Memphis
Lower the curtain down all right
I got no time for private consultation, yeah

19. (We should know better) Dream of better lives the kind which never hate
(We should see) Trapped in a state of imaginary grace
(We should know better) I made a pilgrimage to save this human's race
(We should see) Never comprehending a race that's long gone by

20. You shouldn't have to sell your soul
In black and white
They really really ought to know
Those one track minds

21. Lipstick cherry all over the lens as she's falling
In miles of sharp blue water coming in where she lies
The diving man's coming up for air cause the crowd all love pulling dolly by the hair, by the hair
And she wonders how she ever got here as she goes under again

22. Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain

23. Yesterday I got so scared
I shivered like a child
Yesterday away from you
It froze me deep inside
Come back come back

24. Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down

25. Stalked in the forest, too close to hide
I'll be upon you by the moonlight side
Do do do do do do do dodo dododo dodo
High blood drumming on your skin, it's so tight

Since no song I know is on here I have a lot of choices. I'll go with Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper.

My record on Fridays this month:

1st week: 0 for 25
2nd week: 22 for 25
3rd week: 0 for 25

***EDITED: Forfeiting my Krox bonus for this one...how could I screw THAT up? Easy...just pick a song that somehow wound up in my '80s mix despite being released in 1993 ("Laid", by James). My favorite '80s song, for the record - at least the one that would best fit in this mix: "Love Is A Stranger", by Eurythmics.

Krox: Sheesh, you want me to pick one out of a couple of hundred songs from the 1980s as my favorite? I don't have one particular favorite, so I'll just pick a song from my birth year (1980) that probably hasn't been used in any game of LS before. "Hold On to My Love" by Jimmy Ruffin, which was recorded in 1980... but written and originally recorded by Robin Gibb a year earlier.
"[Drumpf's] name alone creates division and anger, whose words inspire dissension and hatred, and can't possibly 'Make America Great Again.'" --Kobe Bryant (1978-2020)

She Blinded Me With Science-Thomas Dolby

2. I've seen you on the beach and I've seen you on TV
Two of a billion stars it means so much to me
Like a birthday or a pretty view
But then I'm sure that you know it's just for you

Rio-Duran Duran

3. She'll be my mirror
Reflect what I am
A loser and a winner
The King of Siam
And my Siamese twin
Alone on the river

Starting to collect, requested data
What will it effect, when all is done

Krox:

All You Ever Think About Is Sex - Sparks (I don't really have a favorite band from any era - there's always quite a few. My favorites from the 80's were always Squeeze, Midnight Oil and Peter Gabriel. I could have easily used U2, INXS, Split Enz/Crowded House or (more locally) Berlin, Motels or Missing Persons. I chose Sparks because they came to mind as Dolbyesque, perhaps their late 70's stuff more than what they were doing by the 80's.)

So many great songs from the '80s it is hard to pick just one for the Krox bonus. I guess I'll go with a song by one of the most under-rated bands of the '80s: "Stand or Fall" - The Fixx
President, Big Taste Nation

13. Oh, things that you say
Is it a life or just to play my worries away?
You're all the things I've got to remember
You're shying away

14. I see you've sent my letters back
And my LP records and they're all scratched
I can't see the point in another day
When nobody listens to a word I say

15. 'Cause love's such an old-fashioned word
And love dares you to care for
The people on the edge of the night
And love dares you to change our way of
Caring about ourselves

16. And we're not little children
And we know what we want
And the future is certain
Give us time to work it out

17. The broadcast was spreading
Station to station
Like an infection
Across the nation

18. Lower the curtain down in Memphis
Lower the curtain down all right
I got no time for private consultation, yeah

19. (We should know better) Dream of better lives the kind which never hate
(We should see) Trapped in a state of imaginary grace
(We should know better) I made a pilgrimage to save this human's race
(We should see) Never comprehending a race that's long gone by

20. You shouldn't have to sell your soul
In black and white
They really really ought to know
Those one track minds

21. Lipstick cherry all over the lens as she's falling
In miles of sharp blue water coming in where she lies
The diving man's coming up for air cause the crowd all love pulling dolly by the hair, by the hair
And she wonders how she ever got here as she goes under again

22. Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain

23. Yesterday I got so scared
I shivered like a child
Yesterday away from you
It froze me deep inside
Come back come back

24. Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down

25. Stalked in the forest, too close to hide
I'll be upon you by the moonlight side
Do do do do do do do dodo dododo dodo
High blood drumming on your skin, it's so tight
