Fred Phelps has gone to his eternal reward

#1 Post by themanintheseersuckersuit » Thu Mar 20, 2014 10:19 am

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I don't really want to know, but sometimes I wonder anyway what made him into a person who wanted to inflict such pain and misery on the bereaved. Or maybe, what made him into a person who didn't care that he was inflicting pain and misery along with his hateful preaching. Maybe now we can close this particular miserable chapter and move forward in peace.

Can't say I'll miss him. --Bob

Not any female ones anyway.

George Takei

I take no solace or joy in this man's passing. We will not dance upon his grave, nor stand vigil at his funeral holding "God Hates Freds" signs, tempting as it may be.

He was a tormented soul, who tormented so many. Hate never wins out in the end. It instead goes always to its lonely, dusty end.

I would attend his funeral holding a sign that reads, "God is Love." (and perhaps Fred is discovering that now.)

Fitting, since that was essentially the moral of the Twilight Zone episode Takei appeared in, "The Encounter"...

And "The Mystery of the Missing Handbasket" has now been solved. I honestly cannot imagine being filled with so much hatred for others.

Whether the words are his or not--that is a phenomenal way to look at the situation.

I wish I could be as amazing as George Takei. He has an incredibly loving spirit, in spite of (or maybe because of) his time in the internment camps.

I think I read that there won't be a funeral for Fred Phelps. Perhaps his family was afraid that people wouldn't follow George Takei's sage words.
