Paul said he had been scheduled for a 7 pm audition, but a fire call came in around 4. They got the fire out and just managed to get him to the audition on time. (It wasn't clear to me if they drove him in the firetruck all the way to the audition or just to the subway, but I think it was the latter.) So, okay, firefighters are always welcome contestants on SyndieBAM, but that story would have had a lot more impact if he as a firefighter from Elsewhere, trying to make it to a rare roadtrip audition, instead of in Where Else, when they have auditions all the time.

I wonder if the word "vermin" had Paul (and nearly half the audience) locked into thinking only about rodents? Or have city folk really never heard of a scarecrow?

The show arranged a "Tyson Viewing Party" for Paul. Oddly his wife was at the party and not in the studio.

Paul ran through the answers and eliminated the wrong ones but got hung up on trying to figure out what "TSA" stood for, which really wasn't the point. He finally figured out that it had to be the answer.

I was thinking it might be something fruit-related, since O'Hare was once Orchard Field. I'd JTQ on this one.

Well I've seen scarecrows and I was still distracted by the word "vermin". I don't think of crows as vermin.

As someone how has had to research the meaning of vermin, I understand your confusion. My particular case involved bats
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Everything about a Tyson Viewing Party is odd, starting with its rarity and unpredictability to its obviousness as a product placement: everybody has to wear those bright Tyson tee shirts and sit in between those heaping (but apparently untouched) bowls of Tyson food and those giant Tyson banners in the background. I can't help but wonder if all that food gets whisked away the moment the cameras turn off, like a great Potemkin Village party.

The typical contestant has to wait for an entire day or two for a turn in the studio, without being able to predict when that turn will come. Do they make an exception to that rule when Tyson's throwing a party or do the guests of the party have to wait all that time at the remote location, too?

And in Paul's case, he (and presumably all his friends) are NYC residents. They could just as easily have come to the studio to watch his performance live. Save the remote parties for friends who really are a long way away.

I wonder if people who are offered a Tyson Viewing Party know about its curse?
