Meredith Vieira will solo host tonight's Olympics coverage

#1 Post by Ritterskoop » Fri Feb 14, 2014 10:52 am

She'll be the first woman to serve as solo U.S. host (she co-hosted and corresponded already earlier in these Olympics).

Bob Costas still has pink eye, hopes to return for the second week.

Roomie wants to know is Meredith the first woman to host a game show? I said she may be the first to host a successful one, though I'm prepared for folks to dispute what constitutes success. I wouldn't be surprised to find out Betty White hosted something decades ago.

I think Vicki Lawrence hosted a game based on Charades (or maybe Pictionary) back in the '70s or '80s. --Bob

Arlene Francis is the original trail-blazer for women on game shows. In the 1940s, Francis hosted a radio game show titled Blind Date, and when the show moved to television in 1949, Francis was along for the ride. She was the very first female game show host on TV, and hosted Blind Date for three years before becoming a permanent fixture on the panel for What's My Line? for over 17 years.

Betty White won an Emmy for hosting a game show. There have been other women besides Meredith to host game shows.

Betty WHite hosted Just Men in 1983 and won an Emmy for the NBC game show that lasted 13 weeks. Vicki Lawrence hosted WIn Lose or Draw for two years on NBC Daytime 1987-89(Bert COnvy and Robb Weller hosted the syndicated version of the show between 1987-90). Those are the only two women hosts of network daytime. Louise DUart, ANnie Wood, Anne Robinson, Carnie WIlson, SHerri Shepherd and Brooke Burns are among the other women to host US game shows

She was on "What's My Line?" from its start while hosting "Blind Date" until it moved to the DuMont network and she was replaced with Melvyn Douglas.
