Carole King, who wrote half the songs worth writing, ever, mashes up "Beautiful" with Sara Bareilles' "Brave" - it isn't technically perfect, but I am coming to prefer character over polish. Except not so much in the Highwaymen performance, which made Blake Shelton look like a genius.

I agree! Of course, I haven't heard of 90% of the performers including Daft Punk. It's always an enlightening experience when I watch the Grammy's.

I like Daft Punk. I found them roundaboutly by watching a scuba video that had Dead Maus music in the background. I started poking around and found Daft Punk and then found out my son is a big fan and there you go. You do have to like the Euro-techno stuff at times to enjoy them, but some of their tunes are just beautiful.

Totally agree with your picks and I also enjoyed "Just Give Me a Reason" by Pink and Nate Reuss.

I'd say there's a good chance that this was the first year since the 80's when I not only knew all of the nominees for record of the year, but actually liked all five songs. The Mecca CD's and my radio station starting to lean towards more recent songs may have something to do with that, but I had been saying for a while that 2013 was one of the best years for new music in a long, long time....

I was sure I would not like Carole King and Sara singing together but I really enjoyed it. I like Kacey and her song Arrow. Her dress was teeny tiny.
I didn't like Beyonce's song and her hair. Wow has she been on a super fitness journey. A little too much IMHO. Hunter was great too. Willie needs to lose the braids at his age.

I remember the good old days when Beyonce actually would perform live at major events and not just lip synch.

On teh flip side, Madonna really should have tried lip-synching because she sounded (and looked) terrible.

I did not see the whole show, as I started seriously channel surfing after the first hour or so, but Lorde and Hunter Hayes set the bar pretty high for those that followed. The Daft Punk jam was an authentic "Grammy Moment".

On teh flip side, Madonna really should have tried lip-synching because she sounded (and looked) terrible.

I thought that about a number of performers. I think I now have enough of a sample size that I can safely say that Taylor Swift is absolutely horrid as a live performer. Anyone can have an off night, but I've never heard her have an "on" one, Katy Perry isn't much better.

Paul's voice, sad to say, is pretty well shot. Not off key, but shot. He is still capable of writing a hummable melody or two after all these years, though. I got a warm fuzzy seeing Yoko & Sean bopping along to Paul & Ringo.

The Daft Punk tune is not my usual cuppa, but it is undeniably catchy. I tell myself I shouldn't like it, but I kinda do. I was groovin' on it when they joined Stevie's "Another Star" to the main song.

Can't say I've felt the love that so many have felt for Lorde. Just doesn't do it for me.

For those who care, the Boneys are still in the process of being weeded out and assembled. It will be a while.

Don't you dare dis my girl! I've seen Taylor in concert twice now and she's been better than anyone else I've ever seen, including the Beatles in 1966! I think the problem with her live TV performance has been in miking her properly.

I agree that Taylor was a little off-key at one point. And I'm very "permissive" about stuff like that.

Stranger still, to me anyway, was the beginning of the Lorde song; am I right in that the song requires a syncopated finger-snap throughout? I've never actually heard the whole song before, just sections of it. At any rate, the Grammy live performance had the snaps off-time at the very beginning (they were where they should be later); when you've already syncopated the snaps relative to the timing of the singing, you've really got to maintain them consistently, I would say? Was it supposed to start like it did on the show? It sounded like the song was dying right there, & Lorde looked confused.

And that dark lipstick was, in my opinion, of course, awful. She kind-of looked mummified.
