I don't think "The Lord of the Rings" is a character at all. The poem that begins the trilogy (I believe the poem is called "The Lord of the Rings" also) suggests that "The Lord of the Rings" is the One Ring itself. Earendel can say if I'm being picky or totally off base. Still, given the popularity of the books and movies, you'd expect most of the audience to get this question right.

I'm answering this after reading the thread discussion, and I was surprised there was even a question. I said Sauron as soon as I read the question. I cringed when I read the audience response, but I guess they haven't seen all the movies six or eight times, in pieces at least.

At first I was bemoaning the audience's lack of knowledge, but then I realized that Sauron is directly called "The Lord of the Ring" only twice in the books (and in dialogue that I don't think made it into the movies).

Well, since you put it that way...

The poem states that there is One Ring that controls all the others, and in the books it's called the "Ruling Ring" on several occasions. However the One Ring was created by Sauron alone which would make him the "lord" of the rings. As I said in another post, that term ("Lord of the Rings") is used only twice in the books.
