Lyrically Speaking - 1/28/13

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Mon Jan 28, 2013 7:24 am

In a complete and total coincidence (as in, I had no idea when I scheduled the game), today's Encore Monday theme was first presented in the LSWE on 1/28/11. Today, we have TheSearchIsOn's favorite LS format of all time, the short phrase LS! Below are 12 extremely small lyric snippets from songs that span the decades. These l'il bits are, so far as I can tell, unique to only one song that could even reasonably be considered to have been popular. They may seem familiar, but can you figure out what song they come from? This is the PERFECT game for the vague at heart.... :P :P :P

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. Teenage diplomat

2. Sulky smile

3. Thundering velvet hand

4. Melt your popcicle

5. Hungry reggae

6. Five year plans

7. Pocket full of mumbles

8. Gemlike flame

9. Brady Bunch trousers

10. Sixteen Parkside Lane

11. Hurricane Annie

12. Bowel-shaking earthquakes

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that contains a small, unique snippet of lyric, and provide that snippet for full credit.

5 Point Bonus: One of my favorite bits of personal trivia to throw about from time to time.... one of the above artists performed the only concert I have ever gone to in my life. Which one? (Song number is fine for the blind squirrels out there)

My name is short enough to be appropriate, so I don't need to change...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. Teenage diplomat

Blinded By the Light, Springsteen/Manfred Mann

2. Sulky smile

Sarah Smile? Hall & Oates if so...

3. Thundering velvet hand

Something by Fogelberg who my sister loved but his voice plucked my nerves...

4. Melt your popcicle

California Squirrels, Katy Perry

5. Hungry reggae

FM, Steely Dan

6. Five year plans

And another reason this MM works!! Who'll Stop the Rain?, CCR

7. Pocket full of mumbles

...Simon and Garfunkel. The Boxer, I think.

8. Gemlike flame

Probably will know this...

9. Brady Bunch trousers

Parents Just Don't Understand, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince

10. Sixteen Parkside Lane

I want to say Werewolves of London but I know that's not it--the song's in my head because of that %$#@#$ Kid Rock...

11. Hurricane Annie

Aaaaagh! What is this!!!????

12. Bowel-shaking earthquakes

   He can be taught!! The Distance, Cake!

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that contains a small, unique snippet of lyric, and provide that snippet for full credit.

Coincidentally, I had been thinking about this game when I was in the shower yesterday--the phrase "gentian and the indigo" from Find the River by REM popped into my head. I forgot what I kroxed that time--probably "seesaw swingin'" from Walk This Way by Aerosmith. Another Coincidence Alert would have popped up if you had used Bust a Move by Young MC today--that was the Before School Song since I picked one before Erin asked for anything, "you fine fellow"...

5 Point Bonus: One of my favorite bits of personal trivia to throw about from time to time.... one of the above artists performed the only concert I have ever gone to in my life. Which one? (Song number is fine for the blind squirrels out there) For some reason I thought you saw Kriss Kross so I'll have to WAG #9 since they'd be the most likely to perform together, plus I'd give you #9 blindly anyway... :P :P :P :P :P

Moore Street Girls by The Elders: I think there may be a few unique snippets in this song, but I'll go with "sell a map to a salmon". ("Make you buy your dog a dozen roses" would be my second unique snippet choice, but perhaps that's too wordy.)

Mecca Radio has apparently sprung back to life over the weekend. Unfortunately, they have taken a page from the Xmas music department and are playing a night-long loop, which was pretty obvious from listening to it for 3 nights now. Lots of 90's and 00's stuff (even a few songs from last year), with some 80's and a touch of 70's. One of the songs is a Cake song....

Hmmm...went back to the original game, and that was when I wasn't playing! I think I had been absentee for January and looked at the game when I returned in February. This one had bumped forward into the next month with discussion afterwards. So I know what I WOULD have kroxed back then!

edited for superfluous content...and this heading
These lyrics are totally unacceptable. The way I play this is the words generate a tune in my head and then I name that tune (I can name that tune in two notes)

And tell that Interpreter guy that my butt got all sunburned last year when he went off to work for that squirrel again last summer. I hope this season he gets his ass kicked. And I know about asses. The Sun is too glorious down here in Oaxaca (well really on the coast) to make things up for JJC points

1 Blinded by the Light - springsteen
4 California Gurrls - katie Perry You would think she was singing about me
6 Who'll Stop the Rain - CCR you just don't get political commentary in music any more, do you
7 The Boxer - Simon and Gerfunkel
10 Taxi - Harry Chapin Actually, this phrase appears in another song, also by Chapin. Several years after Taxi he released a sequel, brilliantly named

wait

wait

wait for it

Sequel, which also contains that address. Interestingly, even though one song is well known and the other forgotten, I believe they both did about the same on the charts from what I've read

12 The Distance Cake If Mini misses this one.......

Krox - sorry, but I make it a practice not to do anything this short

Bonus WAG #9

AND for the cheater!! So very little to google -- what a game!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. Teenage diplomat

Blinded by the Light, Manfred Mann. This is a GREAT song for cheaters and why Gladys Knight was totally cheated out of the money for her charity. This implies that the show gave her the money later: "In one celebrity episode, Gladys Knight was in the hot seat and had a question along the lines of Which of these artists never wrote a number one song? The choices were Sting, Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen. The answer that the Millionaire producers were looking for was Springsteen. In fact, Springsteen wrote the number one hit 'Blinded By the Light,' by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. Regis acknowledged this later after the error was brought to the attention of the show."

2. Sulky smile

Family Man, Daryl Hall and John Oates

3. Thundering velvet hand

Leader of the Band, Dan Fogelberg. This is the answer to the bonus, and long time posters (and cheaters) have a big advantage here, see below.

4. Melt your popcicle

California Gurls, Katy Perry

5. Hungry reggae

FM, Steely Dan

6. Five year plans

Who'll Stop the Rain, CCR

7. Pocket full of mumbles

The Boxer, Simon and Garfunkel

8. Gemlike flame

Kyrie, Mr. Mister

9. Brady Bunch trousers

Parents just don't understand, Will Smith

10. Sixteen Parkside Lane

Taxi, Harry Chapin

11. Hurricane Annie

Sign O' The Times, Prince

12. Bowel-shaking earthquakes

The Distance, Cake

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that contains a small, unique snippet of lyric, and provide that snippet for full credit.

Midnight Train to Georgia, Gladys Knight and the Pips -- He pawned all his hopes. . .

5 Point Bonus: One of my favorite bits of personal trivia to throw about from time to time.... one of the above artists performed the only concert I have ever gone to in my life. Which one? (Song number is fine for the blind squirrels out there)

FWEET! FOUL! Non-cheaters are all gonna put 13, except there is no 13, so they're gonna put 9!

It's #3: Dan Fogelberg (I love a lot of Fogelberg's music, and not just because he's the only musician I have ever seen in concert, have I mentioned that about 5423789033 time before?)
(That may be better than my one and only concert being Dan Fogelberg.... you may want to file that away in case it comes up again someday.....)
Dan Fogelberg (I missed the opportunity to ask which if these artists is the only one I've ever seen in concert. The answer.... Fogelberg, after my mom won tickets off the radio when I was only 9...)
Dan Fogelberg is the answer to a personal trivia question of mine I like to stump people with....Who is the only musician I've ever seen in concert? My Mom won tickets off the radio to a concert he held here back in 1984 (Part of his tour he held after releasing "Language of Love"). She couldn't get anyone else to go with her, so she took me. Even though I was only 9 at the time, I was still familiar with a lot of his older songs... though I didn't realize until the concert that he had been the one who sung them....

Blinded by the Light - you're probably looking for Manfred Mann, but the Bruce Springsteen original is way better.

2. Sulky smile

3. Thundering velvet hand

4. Melt your popcicle

5. Hungry reggae

6. Five year plans

Who'll Stop the Rain - Creedance Clearwater Revival

7. Pocket full of mumbles

8. Gemlike flame

9. Brady Bunch trousers

10. Sixteen Parkside Lane

Taxi - Harry Chapin

11. Hurricane Annie

12. Bowel-shaking earthquakes

Monster Mash - Bobby "Boris" Pickett - graveyard smash

I'll guess 10 - since I got to see Harry Chapin twice, an absolutely amazing performer and greatly missed.

Obviously I'm not liking the concept any better this time around. Several are vaguely familiar but I suspect I never heard the lines that clearly when they were sung.
