My favorite supermarket is closing

Whole Foods bought out either 6 of the 10 or 4 of the 10 Johnny's Foodmasters in Mass (I heard a radio report but obviously didn't memorize it exactly). I figured the one in my old neighborhood (Inman Square, Cambridge) would not be one, because it is a small building & while the neighborhood has gotten trendier in recent years, it ain't all that Whole-Foodsy yet. Johnny's has fresh meat & veg for lower prices than comparable supermarkets, & a few items that are so low-priced or unique to that particular store that I go there especially for them, even though I don't live as near any more.

Nope, today it had an "everything must go" sign on it.

I'm going to look up the news on the other 2 Johnny's I can get to, & pray they're not on the kill list too.

Oh crap, oh no, they're closing all 10 stores http://arlington.patch.com/articles/joh ... -locations. Another good company bites the dust, & I go into panic mode on where I will get certain things. At a price I like, or at all.

A quick Google shows that only six are going to become Whole Foods store but the other four are closing as well. A liquidator was quoted as saying one was going to be a Stop & Shop.

For lowest prices, try Market Basket if there's one near enough to you. Consistently lower prices overall than Stop & Shop, Shaw's, Hannaford and the other local chains. Good luck on finding the unique items, though.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

I'm lucky to live in an area where there are 4 grocery stores and two warehouse clubs on a two mile stretch of the main road out of the neighborhood. I can easily shop the sales and take advantage of extras like rebates and fuel points and double coupons without running all over the city. The Trader Joe's and Whole Foods opened in an area closer to the beach (and the expensive Fresh Market) so my places didn't get run out when they came to town. If I'm out that way for a restaurant and run into a store in one of the chains I frequent I'm floored by how much more things cost in that neighborhood compared to mine even though the stores have the same name. I can't imagine what the Whole Foods would cost.

Fortunately, there isn't a Mecca anywhere near me. Unfortunately, there isn't a Costco either (OK, there is a Costco I could get to if I wanted to enough to trek to it). I get intimidated by GigantiStores, anyway. Not so much I will never go in, but I don't enjoy it.
