Oh yeah. That's just common knowledge. Everyone knows it's appendicitis.

Ron said this was a perfect dysentery question. I'm glad it wasn't a distractor, he might have picked it.

I suppose the "reportedly" and that sign and associated datums probably justify the answer, but my recollection is that appendicitis as the origin of death from acute abdominal sepsis was only sorted out in the early aseptic - anesthetic era of surgery in the later part of the 19'th century. The analysis of a previous case record would be fraught with guesswork.

But.....

What Ron has achieved is a heck of an accomplishment. Congratulations!

My guess on the answer was greatly helped by the "reportedly" aspect of the question. I figured that a person's injuries could tell you fairly conclusively if death was due to gunshot wound or wild animal attack, but a medical illness diagnosis would be only conjecture. Between typhoid fever and appendicitis, the latter would have distinct symptoms that would lead historians to that conclusion, and typhoid fever would be less likely to be distinguished from other possible fatal infections.
I'm still not certain if I would have had the guts to go for that answer if I was in Ron's "shoes".

Great job getting to the point, Ron! Enjoy the $$$!

Ron, I was really pulling for you to go all the way. Oh, and if I may ask, I get the "fresh" part of your bored handle, but why "shoefresh"?

Answer
D: Appendicitis
The "dysentery" answer made me wonder if you've played too much Oregon Trail.

Without having the rest of your stack to review I don't know if I would have made it this far, but had I done so, I'd have gotten this one. I'm not sure why I knew it, but elwing (my wife) knew it as well, so it must have been something we read about during the bicentennial celebration of the expedition.

Hmmmm. Yeah, that's a good analysis for finding clues in the question wording. Can we count on the question writers when this much money's on the line, though?

You are correct.

Of course, there was more than one wild animal on the Great Plains. :) "Reportedly" would cover that they think that it was a moutain lion, but it could have been a coyote, bear, feral dog, or even bison.

I am trying to figure out if I had learned about the appendicitis during our celebration of the Corps of Discovery or from my older two kids' reading a book for school about Merriwether's dog, Seaman.

I was totally distracted by reportedly, thinking maybe it was a tip towards a gunshot's "report", but also thought a little bit of the idea you had that everything else could be more clearly explained, so one of the two diseases.

This one would've thrown me, for sure. Unless I had recently seen that sign, of course. ;)

Unbelievable job, Ron......congratulations! You must be thrilled!

Shoe was a nickname my sister gave me when I was six years old, and it has just stuck. I told TPTB about my nickname for possible inclusion in the show, but knew it would never happen, because the nickname came from my sister mishearing lyrics in a song about female masturbation...

... and I still have this nickname.

That is a horrible avatar. It will not win.
