Stephanie's fellow dancers come on stage to root her on and pump up the audience. They then fill all of the seats in the first row of the audience, except for Stephanie's dad, Lou, who sits in the middle of them.

I knew this instantly, and I was pretty sure it was because of WWTBAM. Sure enough, from Nov. 1, 2010 transcripts:

Answer
A: Earthquake
This is at least a WWOQ, but I suspect we may be seeing Stephanie again, as the concertgoers didn't actually cause an earthquake. They just made enough movement to resonate with nearby apartment buildings, which had to be evacuated. It's a bum question.

Indeed, and sinkhole is a wicked distractor. Added to the fact that it's a 1992 event, so not anything in current events.

Everyone had assumed Stephanie would go first since she was the "pseudo-celebrity" backstage, so even she was taken aback when Ron was called first. The Millionaire lawyer gave us an especially serious spiel about not looking into the audience or interacting with the audience too much because there "may" be someone in the audience that vagueyvaguevaguelawyerspeak. I'm guessing he was talking about the dancers.
In this town, don't we love it now, everbody's waiting for the next surprise!

especially when Britain's Health Protection Agency (those risible arf and saftey people, if you follow the british right at all), writes "our seismic network showed there had not been an earthquake". If there had, this would probably be now a far more famous event.

If one were to construct a 10 point glowing vegetable scale, this one is a 9/10.

I thought they might perform a dance but all they did was come onstage, clap, and then take their seats.

This is why I read the shoe threads here on the Bored.

I'm surprised the audience response was so high.

Probably because the Speaker is 3rd in line for the presidency.

Wow. I didn't think she'd get this one wrong. Even if it were "sinkhole" there would have to had been earth tremors before the sinkhole developed, right?

If I had been on stage, I'd have asked for clarification about the size of the earthquake. I could picture an audience causing a blip on a seismograph, but getting anywhere up on the Richter Scale is absurd.
