Did I mention that I got my AARP application in the mail?

I think it's pretty funny, and I've been making jokes about the Early Bird at Denny's, getting my fedora and directions to the dog track...

...Mrs. Buff is failing to see the humor.

Did you mail it in?

I plan to send my registration in, although my eligibility doesn't start for another couple weeks! 8)

Five year memberships are only $39.95 (instead of the annual $12.50 rate) -- what a deal!

I'm not eligible until October but I will be mailing it in--I'm too damn cheap to pass on all those discounts.

My in-laws were very excited when people started offering them senior rates for movies.

It annoys me that I belong to AARP yet can't get a Senior's Discount anywhere around here. Seems I have to be 60 for the movie discount.

AARP does give better hotel rates than AAA.

And here I have been tossing all those applications sent to me over the past 5 years in the trash. You mean there really are benefits to signing up?

There are!

Read their web-site.

How old does one have to be to qualify for AARP?

I'm not sure if this is a compliment or a slam (I mean it as neither) but I have always pictured you as much younger than that. Unless I'm off on my AARP notions.

Take it as a compliment. Jeff's parents were in their early 50's when they started getting discounts. They just looked like they were 60.

I agree with you, Sir G. If I really want a discount off the rack rate at a Ramada Inn or whatever, I can get that with an AAA membership. Why would I want to pay extra for the stigma of flaunting the fact that I'm an an old fart? Heck, they even ditched the title of their member magazine. If I can no longer read "Modern Maturity" while I'm eating my Early Bird Special at Denny's, what's the point of joining?

I am sentimental about Modern Maturity for a special reason. That was the name on the check when I made my first article sale to a national magazine. I think I might have been all of 22 years old at the time.

I think if I married an 18 year-old and joined AARP, my teenage wife would qualify for an AARP membership as my spouse. But I haven't tried using that as a pickup line.

My son got his application in the mail a couple of weeks ago and he's only 25.
It said they can't understand why he has turned down their previous offers, although we can't remember getting any other applications in the mail. :)

I get the magazine - whatever it's called - I thought it was called AARP magazine - whatever.

I read it from cover to cover - great bathroom read - and - each month I get something from it that makes a difference in my life.

The last thing I remember is exercises that are simple to do that increase balance.

We lose balance as we age and it can cause falls that are preventable.

What about the other way round? I'm not 50, but I've been retired since the age of 36. If so, I've been missing out on discounts for a couple of years. And I'm so freaking cheap I'd use them, too.

Nope - you lose.

You gotta be 50, or married to someone who is.

They've got an answer for that!

http://www.aarp.org/about_aarp/contact/ ... pform.html
Q: What if I am too young to join as a full member of AARP?
A: For those under 50 who support the association's goals and objectives, we offer an associate membership. Once an individual celebrates a 50th birthday, the associate member automatically becomes a full member, receives a membership card, and can take advantage of all of our benefits and services.
But that sounds like associate members don't qualify for the discounts. :(

I should be getting my AARP app in the mail any day now, as I have that big 5-0 birthday this summer.

My husband, who is 10 years older than I, has been getting them for years and throwing them away. He's not that old!!!!!

I think I'll join just to annoy him!
