I complain

#1 Post by peacock2121 » Wed Feb 20, 2008 6:03 am

a bit about living out here.

This is the opposite of that.

Driving up my driveway yesterday, I had to stop to let the turkeys move out of the way. Can't wait for them to have babies - they are so cute.

The red tail fox (name Jeffery by the neighbor kid) peered in the bedroom door this morning and wandered around under the porch before heading off into the woods.

One of the fawns then followed the fox's scent. It was very cute.

I'm not much for country life, but scenes like those would be nice to see.

We still have a flock of turkeys in the woods around the office. Something spooked them into taking flight the other day. A flying turkey really looks big!

We're not even in the country (2 years ago the land our house sits on was part of a farm and a small field behind the house remains) but in the last two months we've had a Coyote that Daisy tried to chase, 7 deer in the backyard and yesterday a huge hawk of some kind circling overhead. I was worried it was after Bridget for lunch. :)

Most likely a turkey vulture, 5LD. It wouldn't bother Bridget as long as she's moving.

We've got two turkey vutures and a ringtailed hawk in our area, and they've warned us not to let small animals out unsupervised. It could well be a hawk!

My two initial thoughts in response to your subject were "Yes, you do" and "Me, too."

I'm in suburbia, but still have lots of nature around. We feed the birds, so get yellow finches, chickadees, cardinals, juncos, purple finches, etc. When one of the squirrels who also feast in our yard doesn't make it across the street, we say it didn't get run over, it died in the road from a heart attack because it was too well fed.

We also have a flock of wild turkeys in the area, some non-migratory Canadian geese, and the occasional deer. Not to mention the flying squirrel family that lives in one of our trees.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Coyotes come down into my neighborhood and hang around the golf course.

There are also wild bunnies.

There are also ducks that come back every year and raise their young in the community swimming pool. Others live in the water hazards at the golf course.

This bird had the screech of a hawk.....It also had feathered legs.
Growing up in Illinois we had tons of turkey vultures. I don't remember hearing them make this noise. That's why I assumed a hawk of some sort.

Okay, my feeble attempt at being an expert is exhausted.

Some year I ought to sign up for the birdwatching course they offer at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Marley.....no problem. You just probably didn't know I wasn't a real city girl. :)

I grew up in a small farming community.

I'm a city boy myself but grew up in the suburbs of LA next to a city called Dairy Valley (now the city of Cerritos), and yes, it had more cows than people with all the attendant odors. We never thought of tipping them though.
But now living in the heart of LA, I have seen inumerable squirrels on the campus and neighborhood along with some raccoons and the Giant Gambian Rat's cousins. There have been the occasional freed rabbits and screeching exotic parrots. I also have a possum as a sometime guest in my garage.
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

Sounds like the makings of a Disney Classic: The Fox, the Fawn, and the Peacock.

It also sounds delightful. We still get antelope trooping through our lawns regularly, while the deer stay lower, along the creek. I swear, it's like the Crips and the Bloods, they don't cross one another's territory. In the last few years, we've had a bear in a city park (again), a moose on a main thoroughfare, and a cougar in a close-in neighborhood. I went to Albertson's one day last winter and there was a flock of wild turkeys roosting in trees around the store.

Okay, let me call on some real experts...

The feathered legs sounds like the Rough-legged Hawk.

http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBi ... k_dtl.html

Or maybe it's a Red-tailed Hawk.

http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBi ... _Hawk.html

Was its screech more like a drawn-out, downward "kaaaar" or a raspy, scraping, screamed "kree-eee-ar." 8)

We have a Red-tailed hawk living on our property. Not that I know it is one, I just know that Sting acts like he knows it is one.

It roosts on the top of a tree halfway between the tee and the flag on the fish hole.

Marley-
The first style of screech you described, I think. Altho my guess is both would sound similar if you didn't have the other to compare and weren't a "birdie".

We live in the city, but near a creek. We have lots of critters:

armadillo, possum, raccoon, rabbit, Daniel the Squirrel, bats, hawks and....

once in a while, we see a peacock in our front yard. I don't know who it belongs to but it freaked me out the first time I saw it. Maybe see it 7 times a year or so.

Don't be freaked out. That 'bite me' tattoo isn't even real.

I do wonder how you spell that - pishaw!

She has no first hand knowledge.

Not for my trying, mind you.
