"Eat my shorts" was popularized by Bart Simpson. But what 1985 film also popularized the phrase?
Whichever John Hughes film came out in 1985, I'm guessing...
Well...which one?

You got it. But I think it was Bender back sassing the principle.
The trivia question on the Retro Rewind at the ballpark a few weeks ago was along the lines of "The opening line from the movie The Breakfast Club came from a song by which artist?" so I had been reading about it recently, which is what brought it to mind, not any particular scene. I like it and should hunt it down and watch it again. Sixteen Candles will always be a favorite guilty pleasure...

The lead vocalist on "16 Candles" (sung by The Crests) went on to another group known as The Brooklyn Bridge and had a hit with "The Worst that Could Happen".

My older bro and I both do the daily rag's crossword, but it usually takes the two of us together to finish the NYT one. Congrats lb, and Cal, and whoever else does it - it is a big accomplishment and deserves bragging rights.

Awesome! I heard Will Shortz say once that the daily puzzles get progressively more difficult during the week and that he felt the Saturday puzzles, although in a smaller grid, are more difficult than the Sunday puzzle. Is that your experience?

I don't know, I only do the two Sunday puzzles in our paper to kill 2 or 3 nights worth of lunchtimes each week....

Well done, LB!
The Saturday puzzles are indeed the most difficult of the week, with Friday not far behind. The Sunday puzzle is generally somewhere around the level of the average Thursday puzzle, but are 21x21 (and occasionally 23x23) instead of the daily 15x15.
Speaking of which, this Friday I'll be off to Brooklyn for my fourth trip to the
American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. Wish me luck; I'll need it this year...
