Believe it or not, in real life I'm the person who figures stuff out and organizes things and answers questions and basically Gets Things Done. I just come here to be silly and put my brain on idle. Or park....
Well, at least I'm genuinely <fill in the blank with the appropriate adjective you may have for me>..... and it takes no special effort on my part to put my brain in park......

Yeah, well uly's avatar was inspired by a hanging curveball I left up there for you yesterday, although you weren't around to knock it out of the park. It's in the Weasel portrait thread....

I'm doing this without looking it up, but somewhere in the 90s is right.Sisyphean Fan wrote:I think Colorado got casino gambling around 90, but just for mountain towns. I know South Dakota had it a few years before that in Deadwood.littlebeast13 wrote:sunflower wrote:Wow...okay no LA, OK or CA casinos in this book. So I'm thinking maybe it's really only good for Vegas!!
There is info about every state but as far as coupons: Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico.
Boy how times change. It was just 18 years ago that I did my Econ report on gambling, and outside of NV and NJ, I think Iowa had just become the first state to legalize it on riverboats. Now it's everywhere and not just on the water.....

The casino gambling pretty much killed parimutuel gambling and that used to be huge here.
The law provided for low-stakes gambling ($5 maximum bet), but casino gambling had to pre-exist on an Indian reservation. So as soon as Colorado's first Indian casino opened up, Black Hawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek were in business.
Some high-dollar developers wanted to open up a casino in Manitou Springs, but an absolutely brilliant piece of legislation said that the local county had to vote in favor of it first. So these fatcats tried to get a constitutional amendment passed which would allow a statewide vote to override the local vote. In a display of common sense that is sometimes lacking amongst Colorado voters, they stomped it flat.
After seeing the above-mentioned towns changed very much for the worse, I can't imagine anybody new coming on board, but who knows . . .
