Idol Chatter 3/3

#1 Post by Ritterskoop » Tue Mar 03, 2009 11:26 pm

Advancing from this group:

the M: Jorge, who surprised the heck out of me
the F: Lil, duh
the N: Scott

Wild cards: they will bring back 3 of the 27 who didn't advance, unless they sneak Danny's friend Jamar back in from the previous round, because they blew that one. But I am not clear on their rule on this one. In early seasons, they said the wild card could come from any round, but I am thinking this year they must have made the top 36.

from group 1: Anoop, Ricky
from group 2: I don't see anyone obvious. Maybe Matt G. or Mishavonna
from group 3: Ju'not, Felicia

I wager Anoop's high vote total beats anyone else in this group, and he gets that spot. There will be a big male-female imbalance because the Ns have been male (assuming I am right about Scott tonight), so they may lean toward Felicia. I would say Ju'not of the remaining names.

Anoop
Felicia
Ju'not

I find it curious that the groups were arranged so that the standouts from each group would not be competing against other until they faced off in the Top 12. It seems the judges do have a clue here.

No question that Lil gets the female nod here. The others were pretty weak compared to her.

As for the guys, I am torn between Jorge and Ju'not. Jorge was powerful but I like the way Ju'not carried the song. I would be happy if Ju'not made the third high cut if not the top pick. I thought Scott was pretty good and he should land a record deal somewhere as he is even better when behind the piano. But, I would be surprised if he advances here. I think Kristen would have been the female pick had it not been for Lil. So, there a chance she would land the third spot.

Question to those in the know. If the contestants make it this far but do not advance to the Top 12, can they try again next year? There are some youngun's in here that, with a little seasoning, could definitely improve and be more competitive next year.

Von did a good job toning it down. He was actually pleasant up there.

Taylor was the one I was going to keep my eye on. No longer. That wasn't anything remarkable.

I absolutely adored Alex and he really should have sang the song straight without the growls because his voice was lovely. That qualified as a straight-up train wreck, though.

Arianna missed so many notes it doesn't matter what song she picked. It was like something from a pageant, only worse. She really is cute as a button, though!

Ju'not did a cool arrangement and had a great smooth tone and vibe. The voice was shaky and off in places and he looks older than he is, but it may have been good enough.

I have to confess I like Kristen's arrangement and performance. It was karaoke, but good karaoke. Heinous dress, though.

Nate. I can't describe him other than drag-show karaoke. Not bad, but TMTH.

Felicia has a great, strong voice. She missed some high notes. She looks like she dropped a bit of the baby weight between Hollywood and now and restyled herself and looked hot. I hope Homegirl gets a wild card spot because the voting is dominated by men.

Scott wasn't great, but better than before. Kinda boring song. Bruce Hornsby should be sung behind a piano, or not at all.

Kendall was adorable and knew exactly what she wanted to project and either she missed most of the notes, or the backup singers did. Or they both did. It was wretched.

Jorge had me cringing when he picked such an overdone song and looked like a lounge singer, but Hot Damn! The boy can sang. Loved him. He may get through in third place.

Lil did pretty much a copy of MJB and didn't get called out for it. She's in easily, though.

F: Lil
M: Scott
N: Can't figure if it will go to Jorge or Ju'not. Both have a better chance at a WC than most males because of the diversity thing.

I loved that he told them that he couldn't think in English when he was excited, so he just answered them in Spanish.

I also liked that Simon stepped back from the whole "Don't sing with your accent" thing.

I felt the same way re: Simon. His comment that it was patronizing to be so excited that the accent wasn't there was right on the mark.

I have a rooting interest in that Ju'Not is a local-ish guy. I'm hoping he sneaks in tonight. Lil and Scott are locks in my view, and the next spot should go to Jorge, Ju'Not, or Von. I can't see a female making it through, which brings up a dilemma for next week. All three of the "next highest vote-getters" will probably be males, so I think AI will do all it can to ensure that there will be some more female representation in the final 12. Not sure how they will do that, unless the way they pick them is via the judges (have they announced how the WCs will be picked?)

I found this:

At some point after the American Idol results show this Wednesday night all four judges will pick 2 contestants from the three weeks of semi-final rounds to compete in the Wild Card round. There may be an extra contestant thrown in there too, for good measure making it a contest between either 8 or 9 contestants.

It sounds as if the results may be revealed during the same show much like the way the auditions worked. If a contestant gets three yes’s from the four American Idol judges, Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi, and Simon Cowell then they will move onto the finals. But what happens if four of them get three yes’s? There are only three spots to be had.

I guess it all still remains to be seen. Hopefully they will make it very clear this week during the competition so that everyone knows what is going on far enough ahead of time. I am sure the contestants participating in the American Idol Wild Card round would like to understand how the competition works as well.

I TOTALLY AGREE! And they have been "hinting" that they could bring someone back from other than this round.

His dismissal was the only one I truly regretted ...

I'm a total Von fan. I've heard some of his stuff on youtube, and he's really terrific as well as adorable.

Liked Ju'not, Kristen, and Jorge. Even liked Kendall - I didn't hear the problems referred to. Lil is good, but doesn't thrill me for some reason. Scott - he is simply not good enough, sorry.

Looking forward to wild card week!

I don't like over-the-top Von but he restrained himself and sounded good. Taylor was bland and forgettable (I thought "bland " before Simon said it).
I was disappointed in Alex. A severe miscalculation on his part. Aryanna was the victim of a terrible arrangement. SHe never found the pocket and was either ahead of the band or behind it throughout. Ju'Not has great tonal quality although he was pitch-challenged at times. Kristen sounded like a Holiday Inn Lounge Singer. Nathaniel sang ok but looked and acted like he had been time-warped from 1979 Studio 54..too "faaaaabulousss!" for me. I really hate "NoOne" which to me is 4 minutes of Alicia Keys yelling, so maybe I'm not the best judge, but I was not too impressed by Felicia. She has a strong voice, but it cracked and strained anytime she came close to a semi-high note. I really really want to root for Scott but he was pretty mediocre on a song by one of my favorite artists (Bruce Hornsby). Kendall was just plain awful. She was seldom on pitch. Jorge WAS on pitch, but it was almost TOO polished, if that makes sense. Kinda like Jack Jones on The Tonight Show singing a song that used to be cool until every "song stylist" got their hooks into it. I am not a fan of Mary J. Blige or that type of music, but I recognize the one to beat, at least at this early stage of the game, when I see and hear her.

I think Lil is in. I think Scott will ride his likability into the Top 12. The 3rd finalist will be either Ju'Not or Jorge. I'm guessing Jorge, as the judges fawned over him more than Ju'Not.

Felicia looks a little like Courtney Cox tonight.

Von looks like the love child of Ace Ventura and Jimmy Neutron. What's up with that hair?

No big surprises in the Wild Card selection; except maybe for Tatiana. She has a good voice but, oh, the drama!

There were a couple I would have liked to see get in like Matt and Mishavonna but, that's life.

I hope they "bring it" tomorrow and stay out of the 60's and 70's. Although I like that music, I don't think it will get them very far if they hope to get into the Top 12.

Spoiler
What a surprise......NOT.

Shouty McShouterson could join Shrieky McShriekerson in the Top 12.

One of the two Drama Queens (the other being Nathaniel, NTTAWWT) makes it through. At least they picked the one who could sing.

Anoop gets retribution for being in a really tough semi group.

I think picking Megan was a mistake, picking Tatiana was a HUGE mistake (despite the fact that she can sing), and NOT picking Ju'not was the biggest mistake of all. He definitely deserved it over Shouty McShouter-Von.

Von toned down nicely and sounded decent. I think Ju'not having to leave rehearsal sunk his battleship--if the guy is going to have continual breathing problems he's better off without the stress of competition. I can really do without Tatiana but I'm happy to see Jesse, Anoop, and Ricky get another chance.

Megan is a nothing-burger. Jasmine is at least young and cute.

I completely disagree re: Von. While 2/3 of his performance last night was Shout-Free (which is admittedly an improvement over Hell Week), the other 1/3 was just as shrill and annoying as always. Loud <> good.

Adam "Shrieky McShriekerson" Lambert was 100x worse, IMO, but that could be because I actually LIKE the song he butchered, and I can't even remember what Von yelled last night, only that he yelled a good bit of it.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

As for Ju'not, not advancing him to the WC because he had an asthma attack during rehearsal (not during a performance, but during the rehearsal) is just wrong. Had Scott not made it through by the voting, you don't think he wouldn't have gotten a shot at the WC just because he was blind, do you? Ju'not's performance of a song I don't particularly care for (I'm not a fan of the Plain White T's) was worthy in and of itself. I definitely think he was better than Jorge.

Being blind didn't affect his ability to sing, just dance. He's not going to keel over and need medical attention in the middle of the show unless Tatiana knocks him down on the way to the camera.

I'm no fan of Adam. Von I can take or leave, but he does know how to turn it off, and did.

But until the asthma actually DOES affect his singing ON THE SHOW (and not in rehearsal) it should be a non-issue. If Ryan hadn't mentioned his attack last night, nobody would have known about it. They're pre-emptive "Oh, he won't be able to take it" isn't supported by his performance at any point where it mattered. I just think it's wrong for them to deny him a spot because the *potential* that he might have problems exists, especially when his performance was arguably the best male performance of the night, and America (as usual) got it wrong.

I guarantee you that the judges had NOTHING to do with Tatianna coming back. That was an edict straight from the producers, who know they have this year's Sanjaya. This is a ratings grab, pure and simple. Love her or hate her (and trust me, I cannot stomach her in the least), she is about the only "personality" who stands out in what has thus far been a pretty lifeless season. Although ratings are still high, they ARE falling. Tatianna is train wreck TV, and people will not be able to keep themselves from tuning in to see if she finally has the ultimate meltdown on National TV.

I THINK the judges pick the final 3. If America votes, she's gone again. If the judges pick, settle in for AT LEAST another week of Tatiana TV. The producers will do everything in their power to keep her in there as long as possible. It will help the ratings in the short term perhaps, but in the long run, I believe we're looking at the moment where A.I.

I was and still am disappointed about Tatianna.

Amazing how she was able to give them the side of herself she says she never saw until Hollywood week - the side they said they fell in love with.

They can bite me.

Not in a good way.
