Rib-cracking fun
Not. Went out last night to feed our flying squirrels, and I went flying instead. The pelting snow from the other day, which had been nice and rough and crunchy and easy to navigate, had melted on the surface and refrozen. I got to the deck steps, slipped and landed on the edge of a step with all my weight on my lower left back. The ER X-rays showed three cracked ribs.
I am home, on Percoset (which isn't really doing a lot of good, other than making me a bit more spacey than usual), and moving very gingerly. I hope I don't have to sneeze. Burps are bad enough.
Could have been much worse. I didn't land on the spine or damage the kidney. The doc says about six weeks to heal fully. To quote Pavel Chekov, "I'll live, but I won't enjoy it." Can't even manage a hug from GW. Ow.

Thank you very much for going to such great lengths to feed the squirrels! I will see if my attorney can get you a discount off next year's NSAS membership for you trouble....
Squirrels are the architects of forests, the planters of trees, nature's own acrobats and show a zest for life that can inspire us. Every day should be National Squirrel Appreciation Day!

Many of these (squirrel) migrations were probably caused by food shortages as well as habitat overcrowding. We solved that for them. We not only reduced their habitat, we reduced the whole species by about 90%. The least we can do now is share a little birdseed with them.

Oh, man--ribs are no fun. It hurts to sit, stand, sleep, take a decent breath, and don't even think about coughing!

I've slipped and fallen hard twice so far this winter but have just gotten huge bruises.

To feed some squirrels???!!! You must re-think this policy immediately.gsabc wrote:Not. Went out last night to feed our flying squirrels, and I went flying instead. Do you have duct tape? You could always wrap your rib cage with that. It cures everything....or so I'm told.
Seriously, I hope you heal quickly and feel better soon.

A little late on that warning. I knew coughing would be bad, but not THAT bad. I'm now keeping some hard candy with me at all times to stave it off.minimetoo26 wrote:Oh, man--ribs are no fun. It hurts to sit, stand, sleep, take a decent breath, and don't even think about coughing!

Re: Rib-cracking fun
That's probably not a bad idea, but the hair on my body says otherwise. They didn't send me home with a rib belt, though, so the damage probably isn't positioned properly for it or the tape to do much good.kayrharris wrote:Do you have duct tape? Whoever said laughter was the best medicine never had broken ribs. But this was worth it.ulysses5019 wrote:Don't forget to spray liberally with Windex.kayrharris wrote:Do you have duct tape? You could always wrap your rib cage with that. It cures everything....or so I'm told.

Thanks for the concerns. I like it when GW stays home with me, but I wish I were capable of doing more than sitting around with her watching DVDs.

Re: Rib-cracking fun
Hope you feel better soon! I have never broken/cracked a rib, but have known several people who have.
From what I understand, a cracked rib won't feel better with immobilization, that only works for a broken rib that needs to be held in place. But you could try an Ace bandage to see if it helps. I think rest and drugs will get you through it, the first couple of weeks are the worst then you'll start to feel better. Hopefully by then it will also start to warm up outside!
