Something so dumb hurts so much

#1 Post by silvercamaro » Sun Feb 22, 2009 8:11 pm

At 10 a.m. today, I closed the car door on my right thumb. Since I am right-handed, I can't even figure out how I managed to do that, but I opened the door with my left hand and went inside to pick up Kay to take her to the airport. I showed Kay and Hermillion the tiny amount of blood that had appeared, and they were kind enough to soak a napkin in ice water to wrap around the wound, which understandably hurt a little.

After dropping Kay off at the airport, I drove to downtown Oklahoma City to help strike the sets and clean up the theatre after the end of the Gridiron Show. The thumb offered only minimal objections.

By the time I had driven the 20 or so miles back home, however, the thumb had begun to swell, three-quarters of my hand was throbbing and the other fourth was numb, with occasional shooting pains aimed up my arm toward the elbow. I was tired. I wanted to take a nap. I couldn't sleep. I got up and took two aspirin, the strongest non-veterinary drug in my house. Within 15 minutes, the aspirin made me nauseous, and I felt dizzy. I headed back to the couch, where I flung myself toward the cushions. I missed, crashing my kneecap into the leg of a nearby table and landing on the floor. Since that seemed more comfortable than being upright, I stayed there for a minute before crawling more carefully up to the couch. I finally managed to nap for about 90 minutes before I again became fully conscious of the throbbing.

The thumb currently serves no useful purpose. My left hand seems to be coordination-challenged, so that's not much help. If the swelling and numbness are still with me tomorrow, I will try to see my doctor.

I fully recognize that this sort of accident doesn't begin to compare with the aftermath of past and future hip and knee replacements and other serious ailments faced by many BBs and family members, so I ask for no sympathy. I wish only to declare that I have found an investment in stupidity with an amazing rate of return in discomfort. I want to get out of the market.

Oh Judy!

Please accept my sympathy anyway.

More cold compress type thingies might help along with the aspirin.

Ouch! Take it from me I know how that much that can hurt......I slammed a car door on two fingers and opened them to the bone. It took me 40 minutes to get to the nearest hospital since I was doing a blue highways trip in northern California. I managed to survive.

I felt terrible. It's all my fault, although I'm sure Rexer will take all the blame. I ordered her to
put it on ice all day, to which she promptly told me she was sure that would never happen. I
even offered her extra strength Tylenol, which I had in my purse, and I was willing to rummage through
my suitcase to find bandaids which I knew I had packed but I just wasn't quite sure where they
were at that particular moment.

I still feel terrible. :( :(

Squirrels are the architects of forests, the planters of trees, nature's own acrobats and show a zest for life that can inspire us. Every day should be National Squirrel Appreciation Day!

Many of these (squirrel) migrations were probably caused by food shortages as well as habitat overcrowding. We solved that for them. We not only reduced their habitat, we reduced the whole species by about 90%. The least we can do now is share a little birdseed with them.

It couldn't possibly be your fault, or Rexer's. I blame the idiot who casually rested one hand on the door frame and slammed the door with the other hand. If I ever catch up with her, by golly, I'll have a thing or two to say.

Don't make me come down there and drive you to the doctor's office myself...

I hope it starts feeling better soon. The good news is that pretty soon the ICE part will be past and you can go jump in a hot tub for some relief.

Oh YIKES. You've been a brave little soldier all day long . . . now getchurself to the dr. and have it looked at. You showed us this morning how your thumb was already starting to bruise. Don't keep letting yourself hurt.

That is all.

That is every bit as repulsive as the guy with the 10-in. ear hair.

Squashing a digit in very painful and messing up the opposable thumb really sucks.

Judy, right now I have a stooooopid infected finger on my right hand that is driving me nuts. This is the second time this year. I also had an infected left thumb.

I also fell backwards off a picnic table last summer, hit the edge of a deck on the back of my head, had 6 stitches and it hardly hurt at all.

Any injury on your hands hurts like hell - you can't stop using them.

If it's not better by morning - get thee to a doctor!

Hope it's better soon.

Ouch!

The three of you together couldn't get in enough trouble this weekend, so you had to make some for yourself? :(

I must say, though, that you type very well with nine fingers.

You are probably just bruised to the dickens, but sometimes the amount of pain in the thumb, especially can develop from:

Bleeding UNDER the nail. Easy to diagnose, big blue glob visible through the nail, and it hurts like the dickens when you touch it.

This is important because it is easily improved by draining the blood.

Classically, warming the end of a paper clip with an alcohol lamp and burning a tiny hole in the nail with it. The blood goes immediately, at least in part and you feel much better. Very high-tech medicine, ,and a favorite with every ER intern.

NB I will try to comment later today on some of the other medical/health-care threads, but I wanted to throw my .02 in now, here, just in case.
