There are no Sonics around here either, or Long John Silver's, but the commercials/ads are relentless. Sheesh. Have never tried a Sonic, but do love L.J.S. Teases.

Recently discovered that the local Krispy Kremes packed up and left.

My sister and dad always swore that the best burger they ever had was a Whattaburger in San Antonio. I think they walked down the Riverwalk every day they were there just to get one.

I've never even heard of that!! Is that a chain?

My favorite (among fast food-ish places) is hands down 5 Guys. I especially love their fries. But we have a few gourmet burger places around here, those are my real favorites.

We still have one of the Krispy Kremes from the 60's here, and the kids love to watch them make the doughnuts and get the fresh, hot ones that just melt when you eat them. We only go once or twice a year though--usually after we go to one of those drive-through Christmas light displays and maybe some random time, usually when it's cold out. It's not a treat if you do it all the time.

The only good thing about dragging down to the pediatrician's downtown office is that it's right next to Doumar's, which has car hops if you want to eat in the car and fresh-squeezed limeade that is the best in the world. They still have a "machine" (it's not really a machine, but more like a device) that makes the original hand-rolled ice cream cones from the St. Louis (I think) World's Fair and they fire up that bad boy in the parking lot and make fresh cones. It burn either wood or charcoal. I forget. I don't remember eating a burger there, because they have the greatest pork sandwiches on Earth so I get one sliced with slaw and one sliced deluxe (with lettuce and tomato) or a steak sandwich when I'm there. The food comes wrapped in waxed paper and stabbed with a toothpick to hold it all together.

Old-fashioned, nothing fancy, and the greatest place in the world for fast food in my book. But I still haven't tried In-and-Out burgers even though I go out West at least once a year. I may have to rectify that this year.

I don't know, I didn't go with them on that trip, but I got the impression that it was a regional type chain.

If you're at NYNY or the MGM go west on Tropicana and just past I-15 is the In-N Out.

I usually get a free room from the Harrah's chain, but end up at MGM at some point. I've been thinking about checking out the Pinball Hall of Fame sometime, too. Have you ever gone, and is it worth the visit if so? And is it near the In-N-Out, more importantly? I try to consolidate all trips off the monorail line since getting around town is such a pain sometimes.

I drove right by In N Out last time I was there. Not this time. I'm going to have some free time around my work obligations, so I plan on having some fun!

Whataburger has become my favorite fast-food chain since I moved to Texas. Good burgers made to order with thousands of combinations. Also open 24 hours and they serve breakfast items along with everything else from 11 pm to 11 am.

It is in these states: Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Back when we had parents still living in Oklahoma, one of the places that I absolutely had to visit while there was Whattaburger. I wish they'd expand their operation and open one here.

Yeah, our Krispy Kreme left a while back. The building became a Citigroup office, which also left. I think there still might be one at Mohegan Sun, but I'm not sure. It's unfortunate, I did like their donuts.

We do have a Long John Silver's, but it's inside the Taco Bell. When faced with the choice, I would pick Taco Bell...always. I have never eaten at LJS.

I will have to try the Steak n Shake burgers next time...although in the big quest to conserve calories, if I had to choose I think the shake will still win out!
Krispy Kreme was one of the big late, late night hangouts in college when crawling back from a club in downtown Atlanta. I know many of them have closed recently but that store has been there for as long as I can remember. It is a couple of blocks east on Ponce from the Fox and when I was kid it would be a big hairy deal for all of us to pile into the station wagon and drive to the "big city" to shop at the downtown Rich's store and go to the "family" movie at the Fox theater, afterwhich we would make the traditional stop for donuts. That's some 40 years ago which is completely impossible because there is no way I am that old!

I see the picture of a Krispy Kreme store on wiki with the signature red "hot donuts" light (that drew us like moths to the flame on those late nights so long ago...) is that very same store on Ponce in Atlanta.

Ah, so many memories! Most of which are now little more than a blur.

Come to think of it, most of those late night stops in college were kind of a blur even as they were happening...

This thead is making me hungry.

My opinions:

Sonic - Do not underestimate the power of tater tots. Decent hamburgers, but the ice cream is the real draw here, especially the Sonic Blast (I like mine with Reese or Oreos.) The Cherry Limeade is also a product of divine inspiration.

In-N-Out - Back in 2003, I was in Los Angeles for a week on vacation. I think I ate at In-N-Out Burger nearly every day. About a year ago, I was in Oakland for basically one full day. I drove around for nearly half an hour looking for an In-N-Out Burger. Cheap, greasy goodness. 'Nuff said.

Steak and Shake - Once upon a time, I made it a point to go to Steak and Shake every single time I visited family in Illinois. In 2001, I was in Indianapolis for about three days, and I think I ate maybe two meals somewhere other than Steak and Shake. Their Steakburgers are the best, and those thin little fries are pretty good too. I highly recommend the Frisco Melt. The first Steak and Shake in Texas opened a few years back, about 20 minutes away from me. I was there on Opening Day. It took an hour to get through the drive-thru. I didn't care.

5 Guys - I have actually been here once. It was last November, when I was in Indianapolis for a weekend, visitng friends, and they took me here. Greasy Nirvana.

Whataburger - One of my favorites ever. The burgers are excellent, and they'll make them just about any way you can imagine. The fries are tough to beat. And they have the BEST chicken strips and gravy......Mmmmmmmmmmm.

Krispy Kreme - Best. Glazed. Doughnuts. Ever. Especially when they're freshly-made and still warm. For filled doughnuts, I recommend Dunkin Donuts, though.

Damn. This post is proof that I need to go on a diet, lol. 8)

Five Guys rocks! In fact, I might have to go there tonight. Just don't make the mistake I made the first time. A "cheeseburger" or "bacon cheeseburger" is in fact a double burger. A "little cheeseburger" or "little bacon cheeseburger" is your normal single burger, and more than enough for me. And always, always get the fries! :)
