Kid Brag
My oldest swam in the District Junior Varsity swim meet today.
3rd place - 200 yard freestyle
2nd place - 500 yard freestyle
3rd place - 4 x 50 yard freestyle relay (they were seeded 9th!)
2nd place - 4 x 100 yard freestyle relay
All medals.
Next year she conquers the varsity meet.
I officiated. Disqualifed one relay team for an early takeoff. They would have been 4th to my daughter's teams 2nd place 4 x100. Didn't disqualify any individuals.
10 high schools competed. Daughter's high school took 2nd for girls, 2nd for boys, and 2nd overall.
1st place overall team took 1st for girls and 4th for boys. Rich school where many of the kids swim year round for the premier swim club in this area. Those are the only ones to beat my daughter.

Heartiest congratulations to your daughter! She's going to be even better next year. I pity her competitors.BackInTex wrote:My oldest swam in the District Junior Varsity swim meet today.

Thanks for doing that. I know that many swim meets depend heavily on parents to take the training and officiate properly.BackInTex wrote:I officiated. . . .
I saw one young man get DQed right at the start of his relay leg for doing a fraction of the wrong stroke. He didn't let up, even though he knew he'd messed up and lost the race. He and his teammates were well coached.
Well done to your kid! Swimming is a great sport (one where you can't participate with a beer in your hand. . .) except for those dang 6 a.m. practices.

My roommates were all swimmers in college. Yup, 5:30am workouts. My best friend is the head swim coach at Princeton. Let me know when she's ready to pick out a university.

So much about this post that I appreciate and celebrate!
Hooray for the activity - swimming is great for the body.
Hooray for the accomplishment - love it when hard work gets a medal.
Hooray for your involvement and what it takes from you for her to excel.

Wow, that will be a nice connection, even if Princeton doesn't want her. I'm sure he knows others. She would love to go to school on the east coast. I'll have to remember that. She is in marching band, playing the flute.
Swim team
Honor role taking all honors courses
Will have her Girl Scout Gold Award (similar to Eagle Scout).
Did well enough on the PSAT to make the cut for a special course designed to help kids achieve National Merit Scholar status.

You mean she doesn't want to go to USC? Back to Princeton. If you didn't know, the Ivy League schools offer no scholarships. My friend tells potential recruits that if they have a 1400 or better on their SAT (old school SAT), 4.0 or better with AP classes and can afford $50,000 a year, then he is interested in having them swim for Princeton. But if your daughter ever gets to that point and wants to go to an east coast school then I'm sure my friend would be glad to help.

Congrats to the (not-so-) LittleBiT!
And a tip of the toupee to you for helping out. There are way too many parents that think these things run themselves. (And does it seem like these same parents are always the most obnoxiously vocal ones at any given competition?)
I can see that happening...yes I can. What grade is she in this year?BackInTex wrote: Next year she conquers the varsity meet.

Huh? What do you mean Ivy League schools don't offer scholarships? Princeton is #2 on the list of schools offering the highest percentage of scholarships.ulysses5019 wrote:You mean she doesn't want to go to USC? Back to Princeton. They don't offer athletic scholarships, although many of their athletes are eligible for academic scholarships.Bob Juch wrote:Huh? What do you mean Ivy League schools don't offer scholarships? Yes, true. BiTKid should have no trouble getting an academic scholarship.silvercamaro wrote:They don't offer athletic scholarships, although many of their athletes are eligible for academic scholarships.Bob Juch wrote:Huh?
