Might not be so bad after all. Of course of your dad's name is Bear you might have to expect something a bit funky!

Shara Grylls, wife of Edward Michael Bear Grylls (reportedly Bear is not a nickname but rather part of his given name), gave birth recently to their third son, Huckleberry Edward Jocelyne Grylls. Now there's a mouthful!

I wonder what they are going to call him? Of course when one of your older brothers is named Marmaduke perhaps you aren't really going to be surprised by your own name.

The one really left out is the oldest boy who has the rather pedestrian name of Jesse.

So far this year, I've met men named Rhoslyn and Joyce. Rhoslyn has some bigtime psych issues in addition to his cancer (wonder why?) Joyce is an old retired BOXER (again, wonder what led him to get into fighting?)

I kept wanting to quote "Trees" but I was professional and didn't.

The former Chief of Police, here in Podunk was Claire Arlene Tabb. Male. Wonder if parents wanted a girl? Really nice guy.

Adolph/Adolf/Adolfo is out of favor for obvious reasons -- but among Hispanic folks, it's still fairly common. Actor A Martinez's given name is Adolph.

He and his siblings have been removed from the parents by the state social service agency. The reasons have not been explained to the public, but the officials claim that the separation is based on more than the children's names.

A local business owner called herself Sioux -- she wasn't Native American either. I think she was probably Sue when she lived back East, Sioux as soon as she crossed the Mississippi.

I tried to find a reason but got only a general "safety concerns" and "other danger." They're probably not cooking up crystal meth, or the landlord would probably know about it, but I still think it's drug-related.

It probably varies from state to state, but here, the files are confidential and peeps at CPS or the Courthouse can get in big trouble for disclosing facts about a specific case to the media - or anyone else not directly connected.

(NB Jocelyn (no "e") is a classic male name for French types, which used to be quite popular in Quebec (remember the hockey star Jocelyn Guevremont -- native of Montréal))

There was a man named Ariel on WWTBAM today. I don't think I've met a boy named Ariel since the Disney Movie came out, i.e. younger than The Little Mermaid.

I also know a young girl named Akira. She had never heard of the director, but she's still in elementary school.

I didn't even bother to count the elderly male veterans named Shirley I've encountered over the years. There were lots. And they were all from West Virginia. My neighbor, who is one of the ubiquitous female Shirleys born in the 1930s when Ms. Temple was cranking out all those movies, says she's always startled when she meets a male Shirley. That Shirley is married to "Cletus" -- who is a decidedly non-slack-jawed very nice gentleman -- a retired banker and pretty darn good golfer too.

Fun "name" story, even if it is fiction: Sharyn McCrumb has a recurring character named Hill Bear. He is not Native American -- in fact, he's your basic good-old-boy deputy sheriff. He was christened with the rather pedestrian name of "Hilbert" and went through life with that until high school, when he happened to take a French class. The teacher had each student use the French version of their name (Pete became Pierre, Jimmy became Jacques, etc.) When it came to Hilbert, she told him, "Oh, your name is spelled the same as in English, but in French it is pronounced 'il-BEAR!'"

Hilbert like that version so much he's been Hill Bear ever since.
