Seems to me the only risk is if the laptop is DOA on arrival. It might be kind of hard (impossible) to return.
Your warrantee will be from the manufacturer; you just need to know there are authorized technicians nearby.

On the other hand, most of the good stuff is probably already gone ...

I bought a laptop case there on Friday. I paid about $63. When I got it home I found that it was used and had a rip in the fabric where a strap attaches to the case. I'm SOL.

We wandered over to CC today to take a look at flat screen TV's. Everything was marked at 15% off - However, they were selling at 15% off of MSRP. CC almost always sold below MSRP for it's regular pricing. I know that I looked at several of these same TV's before Christmas and they were cheaper then compared to today's "15% off" pricing.

I believe I'll wait.

Circuit City sold its merchandise in bulk to a liquidator who is managing this sale.They will hold prices as high as they can as long as they can (and sometimes supplement the merchandise in the store with other similar merchandise they have bought from other sources). They sell a lot early in the sale to people with a poor idea about going prices who assume they are getting a good deal. A lot of the "good stuff" is sold off in bulk to other businesses and never is available to the general public. What is available at a decent price are often floor models, items that have already been returned, stuff that got banged up in the warehouse and inferior models.

When they closed the Atlanta stores, I bought a bunch of DVDs, CDs, and other low priced items, some of which I gave as stocking stuffer Xmas gifts, but I wouldn't buy anything expensive. I view buying something at a sale like this akin to buying something at a flea market. I wouldn't spend any money that I wouldn't be willing to chalk up to experience if the purchase was worthless. Going through a manufacturer's warranty process without a retailer to support you can be a nightmarish experience.

I would go in and ask if you can plug yours in and boot it up. If you can't, I'd take a hike.

I bought something there a couple weeks ago that I wanted to return. I wonder if they will take it since I bought it when the store was still operating normally? I am so mad because I made a big deal asking about the return policy, and maybe the cashier knew or maybe she didn't...but now I may be stuck.

Haven't been to Circuit City yet -- we were thinking of it yesterday but it was too snowy.

However -- Leah and I did make it to Filene's Basement, since our local store is also closing ( ) We're going to miss it a lot, since that was our first stop for nice shoes at a discount! All the shoes for Karen's wedding were from Filene's, plus, Leah's gotten several cute dresses & outfits there.

They still have a lot of stock left -- and I got a nice Jantzen swimsuit for SIX BUCKS! Leah got 2 pairs of Derion jeans and a pretty blouse for about $25.

But no more annual Running of the Brides wedding gown sale, at least not in Homestead PA

I didn't go since I have a bad cold. While I was in Houston during Christmas they had the same type of commercials for a mega sale, but the items were leather coats for 10$, sneakers for 1$ etc. Has anyone else had a sale like this in their hometown?

The ones we've had like that are typical bait and switch. You pay the admission price to the event, then find out there was ONE laptop for $75. I had a friend who went and was severely disappointed, and said that the electronics were a total scam, and they did have some of the clothing items but they'd be stained or moldy, like if a whole box of sneakers got wet, they'd sell those to you for $5 in all their black and moldy glory. I don't know if that's typical of all those events or not, but I've never wanted to go to one.

Were there lots of TV ads the week before the sale? The ads on TV that were shown in Houston looked exactly like the ones in Chicago except the merchandise was different. I am glad you let me know it was a scam so I don't waste my time going the next time it comes here. The town that I live in sells used laptops for $200, but you have to go to a quarterly sale and get your name on a list. Then when your name is up you can buy one. Our library sells their old equipment for about 90% off retail price. It makes no sense to cut the snow plow budget when the electronic budget is so high.

Ooohh.... Don't go there. I have been to a couple of those and they sell nothing but junque.

When computer equipment was in its hey-day, I used to similar "bargain swaps" at the local areana and got some very good deals on computer equipment. But, these mini-swap meets are nothing compared to that. They sell outdated CDs and DVDs and bottom-of-the-line equipment which is great for kids and people that cannot afford better brands.

Yes - there were tons of ads on tv. Electronics, clothes and cologne if I remember correctly, were the big advertised items.

I went to Circuit City after work to return something, and our store is only at 10% but it was pretty wiped out, except tvs.

They had a testing area set up, according to the signs you had to purchase the item first. Then you go over to that table and do anything you want to get comfortable that your product worked. Then there was an employee stationed by the exit marking receipts as final sale. So if you found it not to work before walking out the door, you could return it, but once you walked out the door it's yours forever.

That is, of course, unless you purchased it before they announced the liquidation, as I did. They are honoring the Circuit City return policy as stated on the receipt as long as it is before that date. Woo hoo!
