I have made somewhat of a tradition of stupidly and unwisely jumping into the fray to defend the stonee in the past on this Bored, so I figure why stop now.....

Thousandaire, I think, nailed one of my huge pet peeves, though perhaps not quite in the most sensitive and thoughtful way he could have done it. Why do some stories warrant large-scale national attention while so many others do not?

Jon Benet Ramsey?

Lacey Peterson?

Natalie Holloway?

Countless others from the recent past I do not know off the top of my head because the news has gotten so out of hand in the last decade that I can barely stand to watch it anymore.....

Do I care that they were all murdered? Well, yeah, in the sense that I would feel bad if anyone got murdered. But am I going to stop what I'm doing and grab the Kleenex when I hear stories such as this? No.... because if I did, my eyes would be too red to see because senseless shit like this happens all the friggin time!!! It's just that 99.9% of it never makes it out of the local scene.... and the 0.1% that do probably shouldn't either. I feel bad enough when something like this happens in my own backyard (We had Paula Sims about 20 years ago), but should I have my heartstrings tugged at by the "We all know that crap is king" media because they think they found a story that's got such great "human interest" potential that they want to make sure it makes it into every living room in America? Sorry, that's just one of the reasons I find myself watching the garbage that passes for news less and less. I can't stand to be manipulated by a beast that has only their Neilsen ratings in mind. Think about just why this is a national story for a minute.... but the redneck on the other side of town who shakes their 6 month old baby to death gets a 2 minute report on the 10:00 news and is never heard about again.....

So I care that young Caylee Anthony was murdered? Of course I do.... as I would for any such senseless tragedy....

But in the grand scheme of things, should I care more about this than any of the other horrible tragedies that unfortunately happen all the time.....?

I'm not reaching for the Kleenex....

I took it in the spirit in which I felt it had been offered up, and I took it to be a case of overdosing on Pretty White Girl In Danger. Which covers the Jon Benet, Lacee, Natalee, Caylee etc etc etc stories.

I'm sure he cared about her, but every time you turn around it was a case of the headlines screaming Tot Mom In Hot Bod Bid!, and that wasn't even the tabloids. (I made that one up--I should get a job with the Enquirer, huh?)

Maybe the Bored Enquirer....

That would actually be a sweet idea.....

Does that make those who attacked me stoners?

Thanks, lb. I would have explained myself but as John Lennon once said about a Beatles reunion, "If they didn't get it the first time..."

I don't know whether to be flattered or creeped out that people are researching all my posts.

I thought of complaining to a moderator but I could not find a code of conduct for this board. Is there one?

I think you should be creeped out! Since I'm one of the ones who did it!

I wanted to know and couldn't remember if you were M or F -- I was confused by your avatar, and I remain pretty much in a state of confusion all the time. Or, as Casey Stengel said, "You could look it up." So I did.

It's easy to research posts -- I just hit your username and scrolled until I found "my wife." Generally that's a pretty good indicator.

I dunno what the other folkses did. There's also advanced search, which I often use on myself so I quote myself accurately.

I'll be happy to complain about myself to the moderators for you -- I've never met any of them in person but feel as though I know them personally, with the exception of Confessor and TubaDave, since we never chitchat like Bob####s and I do about bridge, or LB and Eyegor about baseball and other stats, or BobJ and I about Colorado since he used to live here, etc. Just say the word! My personalized complaint about myself can be on the way in seconds! :D

I want to complain about the Elwaylove and SteelerNationAdoration that I see on this bored. Will it do any good?

Rather than complaining to a moderator that your words are being used against you, why don't you put a little more thought into what you post in a public forum? Everything you post here can be viewed by a wide range of people with a wide range of experiences and feelings. It is not only BBs, either. There's a reason it's called the World Wide Web. Did you really believe that your statement wouldn't offend anyone?

If a message board had a Code of Conduct stating that nobody could read anybody else's posts, wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose of it being a message board?

If you don't want anybody to read your posts, there is an easier and more direct way to solve the problem than to complain to a moderator. Nobody can read what you don't post in the first place.

I would also like to thank TMITSS for posting his initial message. No, I really didn't care that much because I hadn't read anything about it (I couldn't throw out a newspaper without reading it, so I solved the problem by stopping the paper years ago) and about the only thing I knew about it was seeing a picture on the front of a People magazine quite some time ago when I walked past the checkout stand.

After reading some blurbs, I watched 20/20 and Dateline last night and found the whole thing both very interesting and very emotional. I'm not going to be consumed by it, but I will keep tabs on the case to see how it turns out.

I knew about the relationship. And now I'm gonna have to dig out the sideline photo I have of Melo at a USC football game a few years back.

You know, I just thought that for a few years now I've been saying how much Carmelo Anthony and Lendale White resembled each other (not so much now that Carmelo has been shorn and slimmed down a bit). Maybe after the football season he'll show up at a game to support Chauncey and Pepsi Center will fold in on itself due to the Doppelganger Effect.

Not really. I think all of the moderators are in agreement that folks who show up here either are adults or are willing to be treated as adults, and in either case are responsible for their own on-line reputations. I've been known to offer an occasional suggestion, but it's just that -- a suggestion that the recipient is free to adopt or reject, in whole or in part. I suppose if something that was actually actionable showed up, we might not be so laissez faire about things (Dave, at a minimum, might be compelled to act), but other than obvious spam, I haven't seen anything that comes close to that level.

Having said that, lb articulated what I suspected you meant by your post, but I was too lazy to put my thoughts on paper (er, electrons). I believe you might have been well served to accept some responsibility for the misunderstanding (given the number of people who misconstrued your intent, I think it's clear that some of the responsibility is yours) and then to clarify your meaning. I have found most of the people here receptive to such efforts (see the part above about being adults). --Bob

You'll get no free pre-conceived pass of communicative omission from me. You think you can "say"/post pure, unadulterated crap and then go boohooing to a moderator because another poster researched your previous posts? Puhleeeeeze. You think the search function exists because.............??????

What are you, 12 years old? Wait, let me think about this......no, you're married so I guess that makes you of adult age, chronologically anyway. Must be that stunted male maturity thing kicking in.

And by the way, judging from your other posts, you are no John Lennon.

Actually, posting a "Should I care" sort of response to a post about a subject about which you've become inured or that you think is just another example of news inundation or overblowing of a particular story when there are so many other horrible stories, is either a trolling mechanism designed to incite further posts (which has happened), or, is indicative of a lack of imagination.

One should have responded to a post that one DOES care about, rather than one about, yes, yet another dead baby. Certainly, not your dead baby, or even all the dead people that haven't popped up in the news. But, you're on the innernets, and you obviously read online news and watch tv, so you know about this story. Why else would you comment, albeit facetiously?
Well, then

Since no moderator complaint system seems imminent, I'm just gonna go ahead and offer up my services.

I will accept any and all complaints about how you are being picked on, mistreated, called old or fat, or generally messed with in any way.

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!!!

If you call in the next 15 minutes I'll even throw in my expert advice on how to deal with your problem. I am a certified genius so you know the advice'll be good.

Complain at your own risk - I reserve the right to make fun of you behind your back and to spread rumors of your illegitimate children to other members of the Bored. But don't worry, you can just complain about it to me! 8)

The code basically is, if you post it, others will read it and you will have comments.

Word more carefully, if you seem to be frequently misunderstood.
