The Rangers stand alone

#1 Post by danielh41 » Mon Oct 06, 2008 9:56 pm

With the Rays clinching their ALDS tonight and the Rockies' postseason success last year, the only franchise left in baseball to have never won a playoff series is the Texas Rangers (Washington Senators from 1961-71). Of course, I am counting the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals win in the divisional playoff series in the strike-shortened season of 1981...

Go Rangers...

I thought this was a hockey thread. The NY Rangers are, in fact, alone atop the NHL right now at 2-0.

Dallas has a baseball team? That will come as a surprise to many in the Metroplex judging by their attendance.

Yes, the Rangers play in Arlington, right next to where the Cowboys new football stadium is going up.

I'm sure that the Rangers' ineptitude over the past 36 years is Rexer's fault...

That was supposed to be a Houston crack on Dallas. I guess I didn't do it right if you thought I didn't know the Rangers were in Arlington.

On second thought, maybe that makes the joke even better.

The Rangers have been so bad for so long that I didn't think anything about someone not knowing that the Dallas area had a team. Pretty sad, huh?

They actually did make the playoffs three times in the late 90s, but they were just road bumps for the Yankees all three years.

Now, that's funny.

I am surprised, but not astonished.

Yes, the 1981 MTL-PHI was a real playoff series, and a very good one. Only the First Half vs Second Half proposition, which left out the best team over the whole shortened season, STL, was really unpopular

Thus, the playoff formula was relegated back to AA leagues, and such.

At that time, also, after the experiment of a third round, the fan feeling was in favour of leaving things with two rounds only. But, evidently, not so much as to prevent a three round system just over a decade later.

Slightly off-track but etaoin made me think of it. There are some rumors that Major League Soccer is considering a split season in the future. They are common in Latin American soccer with some countries having two champions per year but others having a playoff between the seasonal winners.

Most of those league take the break in the winter (Dec-Jan) and call the fall season the Apertura (the opening) and the spring season the Clausura (the closing).

Most of those leagues around the world have an off-season June to mid August.

MLS is supposedly considering a break from mid-June to the end of July because of the number of international tournaments then and the heat in much of the U.S. The suspicion is that if this happens then the MLS Cup playoffs would have the first half winners taking on the second half winners in some format.

Some pros and some cons to the system. I'd be surprised if it happens but you never know.
