The leaders said nothing substantive after the meeting. Yet I’m a bit hopeful because:

Trump consulted with Zelensky and European allies before meeting Putin, and he said future meetings would include more parties
Trump indicated that if Putin is recalcitrant, the meeting would be very short, and it wasn’t
Rubio and Witcoff accompanied Trump
- Rubio has supported Ukraine for years
- Putin couldn’t show Trump the queen of diamonds
