Tariffs

The massive coming together of the majority of Canadians is heartening. We are so united as a country right now.
Groups on FB sharing Canadian made products vs US products. Blue sky posts supporting our actions, even some Twitter support.
Most premiers support retaliatory tariffs. My premier is targeting energy exports, liquor (from specifically red states), opening talks with other countries about our lumber and minerals. All government entities are to immediately stop buying anything from the US.
I care about and respect most of you here, and will interact on the main page, but for those die-hard supporters of Maga isolationism and cruelty, I pity you. Targeting your allies is so STUPID.
Other countries will cut the US off soon too, and it will take a lot to get any trade back. There is really no respect for the US in the world.

Mexico has blinked.
Mexico, US reach deal that puts Trump tariffs on hold
Mexico and the United States have reached a one-month agreement to stave off tariffs and a trade war, the threat of which sent global markets tumbling early Monday.
The tariffs on Mexico were set to go into effect Tuesday. By midday Monday, Trump's 25% tariff on Canadian goods and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods still appeared on course to begin Tuesday.
Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo said her country will send 10,000 National Guard troops to its northern border, while President Donald Trump agreed to work to slow the flow of American weapons south of the border.
Trump had promised 25% tariffs on all goods from Mexico before the two leaders worked out an agreement early Monday in a phone call.

Quite a
blink. You'll notice that the agreement doesn't call for 10,000
additional troops. So Sheinbaum can withdraw 5000 troops, and be in compliance. As if anyone would be verifying this, anyway. They just wanted another opportunity to say tariffs work.
And how much money did short sellers make off the stock market tumble? How much did regular investors lose?
BTW, Mark Cuban called this last Friday.

Do you have a reading comprehension problem? Tariffs didn't accomplish anything positive, other than the equivalent of a photo opp. And they created even more ill will with the people of Mexico and Canada.

I think it would be fairer to say that the threat of tariffs works - depending, of course, upon what is meant by "works". During the campaign Trump said that tariffs would be used to help pay for child care and allow for lower taxes. But it all that is happening is that a threat is levied and then removed, I don't see how the tariffs "worked". Seems to me that what HAS been accomplished could easily have been done through other means.

But they never have. That's the difference.
Here's some of the things that HAVE been accomplished in, what? two weeks?
Mexico caved
Panama caved
Colombia caved
Venezuela caved
Canada panicking
Mass deportations
Hostages are home
DEI programs ended
Bureaucracy slashed
FBI purges are underway
USAID funding cancelled
Gender ideology eliminated
DOGE already saved billions
51 intel agents lost clearance
Border crossings drop by 93%
Reservoirs filled up in California
You may not agree with these things, but the vast majority of your fellow Americans voted for the guy who said very clearly that he was going to do these things. So I would advise you to sit back and see how it comes out in 4 years.
Unless your side decides to do a real insurrection.

No. Insurrections are only for cunty sore losers (that’s you btw).
Anyway, I think it would be curious how a tariff with Canada would poll. Only the most dyed in the wool Trump morons who exist to take marching orders from Donnie think it’s a great idea, when a two weeks ago, they didn’t know anything about it.
That’s the other thing I’m loving about this. Suddenly Trumpers are all experts on trade and why Canada, perhaps our oldest ally, is now somehow bad.

This is a great point. Trump has talked about this External Revenue Service as an ongoing thing. Of course, we don’t need that, as we already had a department that did that. But he set up the expectation that he’s going to tax other countries to sell us stuff, and a lower taxes on people, presumably rich people.
But if Canada does… whatever the hell they’re supposed to be doing to stop Mexican fentanyl, does the tariff stay in place?

Listen to President Trump. He addressed this. You're not going to hear it from your biased 'news' sources. He believes they do not engage in free trade with us. We do not need their cars, lumber, energy, etc. A lot of drugs get carried across the Canadian border. We protect them with our military. Trump is speaking again with Trudeau as I write. Let's see what happens.

I predict that within the next two months, there will be pictures of Mexican National Guard members posing beside packages of (purportedly) fentanyl. It will be hauled as a great victory here and elsewhere. No one will demand proof that it's actually fentanyl, or even drugs.
Claudia Sheinbaum is not stupid. She knows she has for years of this to deal with, and she knows how to play the game. You all, however, seen to be buying in to the propaganda. So yes, I'll wait and see. And I'll post about the results. And you all will claim that it's somehow a great victory.

Geez, Mr Kelley. You've finally and suddenly figured out that a lot of government actions are PROPAGANDA? But NEVER on your side.
I think our side will trust but verify. Trump doesn't seem to worry about hurting anyone's feelings. And he ain't running for anything.
