OPINION: No wonder Republicans want to drop citizenship mandate for Arizona voters
By Laurie Roberts, Arizona Republic,
It’s fascinating to watch the Arizona Republican Party’s sudden interest in allowing voters who haven’t proven they are U.S. citizens to cast ballots in this year’s state and local elections.
Normally, party leaders drop onto the fainting couch at the mere mention of “federal-only” voters — people who have affirmed, under penalty of perjury, that they are U.S. citizens and thus eligible to vote in federal elections.
For two decades, Arizona residents have been required to provide documented proof of citizenship in order to register to vote in state and local elections.
And for two decades, Arizona’s GOP leaders have slimed those “federal-only” voters, calling them “illegal aliens” and insisting that everybody should have to prove their citizenship in order to vote.
And if some U.S. citizens cannot? Oh, well.
