You obviously haven’t availed yourself of insurance. This was, indeed, an act of God. Even irrespective of insurance. I find your shit offensive.
"Acts of God" are pretty much in every construction and insurance contract. It is a thing, legally even for atheists, and in actuality for everyone.
It’s a figure of speech, like godforsaken or "in the year of our Lord," commonly used in nonreligious contexts. Neither Leavitt nor anybody else means it literally. If they did, it would be extremely insulting to God, insinuating that He made the river crest at a spot teeming with innocent children. Fortunately He’s slow to anger and abundant in kindness.

As with many tragedies like this one, there are multiple horrible things that contributed. But I am irritated with those who are claiming that it was "caused" by cuts at NWS and NOAA. Yes, they're understaffed, and have been since before the first Trump administration. Yes, the cuts are going to have major consequences for forecasting. But in this case, there was sufficient staff (several staffers were called in when it became clear it was going to be a severe weather night) and there were sufficient warnings delivered. They might have come a little later than usual, but that would not be surprising, given the instability of the air mass. It was a combination of an incredibly powerful storm, the fact that it happened after many people were asleep, and the lack of a siren system -- and I'm not even convinced that would have helped, given how fast the water rose.

I think there is a conversation to be had here about the increasing severity of weather events, likely caused by climate change, and what that means to the risk/benefit analysis of emergency response. But that's for another time.

Tell me the truth, prior to this weekend, you are camping along the river, but 25 feet above it, in a cabin that has been there 50+ years. Are you really worried?

I find a lot of things offensive with this post.

First of all - Jeremiah Hassel - the supposed 'journalist'. This moron somehow got a job 'reporting' and has never heard of the term 'act of God'. On top of that, he uses his ignorance to construct a hit piece on Leavitt.

Second - MSN for releasing this piece of garbage. Don't they have editors? Or are their editors as stupid as Jeremiah Hassel? I wouldn't doubt it.

Third, but goes without saying - BJ playacting about being offended when he doesn't even comprehend what complete drivel Hassel has concocted.

MSN is a news aggregator that publishes articles from a variety of sources every day. (Yahoo News is similar.) This particular story originated on the Irishstar.com website. According to their website: "IrishStar.com launched in February 2023 with the tagline: The Voice of Irish America. Our goal is to be a voice that bridges the gap between the two countries in a way that hasn’t been done before. We have reporters in the United States and Ireland with an ambition to shine a light on the Irish in America, their issues and the stories that matter to them."

There’s actually a couple of videos out there, quoting people about how they wanted to refuse the money from the government to upgrade emergency services. Talking about how Biden is a communist and all this other nonsense. Also, how Texans watch out for Texans and no one else can.

Of course, they’ve had Mexican firefighters fish dead kids out of the river very recently, so other folks are apparently now helping out too.

Sometimes disasters just happen. But when you have a view of the world that people from New York City are your enemy, or that you could do everything by yourself, you do put yourself a little bit in a bad spot when bad things happen.

And they’ll happen again. Floods aren’t a conspiracy by the media to take your money, or from cloud seating. They’re gonna happen more and more because the climate has changed because the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

All the more reason to have a government that supports emergency services and tries to stay ahead of climate change.
