Donald Trump 0 for 2 Against E. Jean Carroll

A federal judge ruled today against Donald Trump on the issue of defamation in a second case brought against him by E. Jean Carroll. After a jury found Trump guilty of assaulting Carroll and awarded her $5 million in damages, the judge in this case said that finding was conclusive here. Since this defamation case arose when Trump accused Carroll of fabricating her rape claim, he is now liable for defamation based on the falsity of that claim. The case will proceed to a jury on January 15, 2024, solely on the issue of damages. (Carroll is seeking over $10 million this time.)

This is actually the third lawsuit by Carroll. The first one was about defamatory comments made by Trump while he was president. Initially, Justice Dept. lawyers defended Trump in that case, not because he was innocent but because they generally defend presidents against lawsuits. They decided in July that they would no longer be involved in that suit.
