Q3 - FROM THE FRENCH
B - If you were playing a game show entitled "DES CHIFFRES ET DES LETTRES"
which might you most likely expect to do:
1 - identify pop tunes
2 - slide on inflatable beach toys
3 - do mental arithmetic
4 - recite poetry
G - In a correctly done French menu, a dish identified as an "ENTREE" would most likely correspond to this sort of a dish
1 - soup
2 - appetizer
3 - starter
4 - main course

the game show would translate as letters and numbers.
in fact, the two main challenges are mental arithmetic, and a scrabble-like search for the longest word in a group of semi-random letters.
inflatable beach toys HAS appeared a contest element in a French show. But not this one.
ENTREE IS STARTER. It comes from the verb "enter". PLAT PRINCIPAL is main dish. Appetizer is close, but starter is closer. HORS D'OEUVRE for appetizer, but i havent seen that term in Montreal at least for a while., but it is the usual translation
14-12 for G

So why do all the menus list the entrees as the main dishes?

I think the "gotcha" in this question, was that he was looking for properly written FRENCH menu. I guess us Yanks just don't get it!
yup. Entree for main dish is an mericanism.
The Yanks get peeved at the little plates they get when they order an entree from a properly done French menu.

OK - now that was weird. I didn't write the part that says:
yup. Entree for main dish is an mericanism.

How did somebody add that to my post???

I'm hearing Twilight Zone music, Nancy!
That is weird. Maybe as moderators we have special powers...and the special power got mixed up.

Submitted for your approval. Hermillion. A normal but highly intelligent woman who just logged on for what she assumed would be a light, friendly Friday Night game testing knowledge of facts both important and trivial. Little did she know that she would soon find herself on a message bored in....The Twilight Zone.

Can you imagine what this could do to the outcome of a game here?
Not that anyone here would even think of such.
If someone edits me, will you please edit with the correct answer so I can look smart? Thank you!!
