It was indeed to avoid a paternity suit, and this just got a few lines in the agate type of The Sporting News, at that time.

Of course, the team moved to Oakland in the off-season, and the suit had to be settled, for Campy to play and live in the Golden State.

14-12 for B, I think.

Hurray for Bob####s. His arrival was like the appearance over a hillside of the U.S. Cavalry.

Q4 MORE 1967.

#28 Post by etaoin22 » Fri Mar 28, 2008 9:19 pm

B - Walt Bond, a power-hitting reserve outfielder, won the first game of the season for one of the better teams in the American League, with a pinch-hit home run.

This team was at that time the northernmost major league team.

Which team?

G - Bond was unavailable down the amazing stretch drive of that team, having

1 - died of leukemia
2 - signed up as a Marine
3 - joined a Cistercian monastery
4 - had a sex-change operation.

Joined a monastery, selected because of its specificity.

I'm guessing this would be a team in the northeast...I don't think there were many northern teams on the left side early on...but who knows? Maybe Detroit?

Wild guess on leukemia. That would be sad.

As I like to kid AD - Minnesota and Wisconsin are way north of Southern Ontario.

I kinda liked the sex change operation choice thrown in there as well.

Great job, doctor!

So, do Canadians think that folks from Kitchener have southern accents?

They're free at the golf course. Not that getting a free stubby pencil is worth playing golf for.

At any rate, Walt Bond of the Minnesota Twins died of leukemia during the 1967 season. Again, never really got much of a play in the media, so I don't know the story in any detail. The Twins could have used his bat, losing the pennant to Boston in the final weekend.

I am calling scores even for Q5.

Another 1967 story.

We don't have accents in Ontario. It's all the others that do.

When we were in Newfoundland in 1984, I talked to some people there and you can't understand a word they're saying and they're speaking English.

So poor Walt went on to his reward without a "Brian's Song" movie.

Q5 - More 1967

B Dennis Dale "Denny" McLain was one of the better pitching talents in the American League that year, combining with Lolich, Wilson and Sparma to form the four-man starting rotation of another very good team. That team and Minnesota just were edged out by Boston at the end of the season.

Which team?

G - However, McLain was unavailable for two weeks in September with a bad foot injury of uncertain cause. The best public guess by now of what happened, is

1 - Bad LSD trip
2 - Dropped 3 cases of Pepsi-Cola on it (his favorite beverage)
3 - Woke up with a kink in his leg (the story at the time)
4 - Stomped on by the boss of the local Mafia.

I haven't been to Newfoundland, so I can't compare, but the only time I've been completely stumped by English was when I tried to talk with Cockney guards in the Tower of London. (I'm presuming they were Cockneys. It's not like it would have done me any good to ask them.)
