Direct from Paris: mental arithmetic done for speed, as per Des Chiffres et Des Lettres. But this one is my doing.

I got the same thing you did, BB. The trick is, did we do the parentheses in the right order?

You see, the trick is that MOST of Des Chiffres et Des Lettres is lettres (8 scrabble-type determinations of the longest word in a random draw of letters) and only four arithmetic type questions. And some years ago they added a duel-section in which you didnt get a full 60 seconds, but the faster of the two players wins. And about 90% of those questions are wordy (find two related words which together make up nine letters, or orthography (speliing) and so on).So the contestants tend to be wordy types not math nerds. Actually they are both, but nevertheless when they get mental arithmetic, they usually groan a bit. The key to the mental arithmetic questions in that game is always the multiplaication at the left.

oh by the way''

Even if there is an extra on on the right, it really doesn't count

It took me a full semester to get the parentheses rules right. Once I got them, it is something I have never forgotten.

Like:

always split aces and eights

stop drop and roll

never, ever let them take you to a second location
