Is there any way to allow each user to select the maximum number of posts shown on each page of a thread? If not, can an administrator change the default from the current 15 to something more reasonable, say 30?

The users can't, but the administrator can.

The downside is that it takes more bandwidth when someone is looking at just the last messages in a topic.
