Answers and Points Timeline, Game 19 Thursday September 25

So, the more observant among you might have read yesterday's Timeline and thought "WTF? Wednesday is supposed to be Reverse Timeline Day!" And you would be right. Except I persisted in thinking that yesterday was Thursday. Ha!

So, a day late, but here's the Reverse Timeline for the week! This was originally going to be more involved, but since countries seem to gain independence and lose it and get it back, I felt I needed to actually give the years with this topic. Plus I promised that the date of independence for my beloved Lietuva would be in a Timeline this month!

So, you got the dates, you got the Country Well, just match them up for 10 points each. You'll also get an additional 10 points by giving the country from which they gained their independence at that time (if multiples, you only need to name one country). That, with two 10 point bonuses, makes a possible 200 points today. Format should be as usual, country and former sovereign in bold under the year. Please do NOT put the years in the Well, it takes me three times as long to figure out your scoring like that. (Almost everybody is great about answering in the requested format and making it easy for me to score, and thank you for that!)

Either I'm confused or you are. I don't know which. Twelve freed countries @ 10 points = 120. Twelve former oppressor countries @ 10 points = 120. Two bonuses @ 10 points = 20. Total = 260.

Am I missing something?

I was just going to say I'm confused, since that's usually the case. Ha! But I looked back at my notes and I had originally planned on the additional 10 points per country to be just 5 points. When I later decided to up them, I didn't update my total possible and just typed from what I had written.

"What a Country!"

1. 1825

Brazil - Portugal

2. 1847

Liberia - United States

Originally founded as a colony for freed slaves in 1922

3. 1868

Cuba - Spain

4. 1911

Mongolia - China

5. 1922

Ireland - United Kingdom

mel gets a 10 point bonus for the Irish Free State answer! I had originally put that down, but thought it would confuse people and I didn't want it to seem like I was trying to trick anybody, so I just used Ireland.

6. 1945

Indonesia - Netherlands

7. 1956

Sudan - England and Egypt

Although depending on the year, it was England, Great Britian, United Kingdom, I accepted any of them for all years.

8. 1962

Algeria - France

9. 1968

Mauritius - United Kingdom

A lot of people had France, but that was Mauritania

10. 1975

Angola - Portugal

11. 1986

Micronesia - United States

12. 1990

Lithuania - Soviet Union

Same as with England. USSR, Soviet Union, Russia were all acceptable.

Hmmm, seems like that was just the start of Cuban liberation, not the end.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Years'_War
The Ten Years' War (Spanish: Guerra de los Diez Años, (1868-1878), also known as the Great War, began on October 10, 1868 when sugar mill owner Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and his followers proclaimed Cuba's independence from Spain. It was the first of three liberation wars that Cuba fought against Spain, the other two being the Little War (1879-1880) and the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898). The final three months of the last conflict escalated to become the Spanish-American War.

That's why I put in the header that, since some countries seem to gain independence, lose it, get it back, etc., I was giving the specific years.

October 10, 1868 is the day Cubans recognize their independence.
