I played bridge last evening during our STAC with a local lawyer with whom I've been playing a bit. I actually didn't play all that well (I made a couple of dreadful judgment calls -- walking my partner into -800 on a part score hand, and correctly doubling a contract but then failing to beat it), but we still had a pretty decent game of 62.4%. Judging from Monday night's scores, I think it's realistic to hope for an overall award. I should know by tomorrow.

By the way, did anyone see today's Peanuts Classic? --Bob

We didn't play STAC last night and had a 58.3% to take second. Winner had 59.2%. I hope you got an award. That was bad luck on the -800. I had one piece of great luck -- I went down three on a 1S overcall and got high board out of it. Pard and I had 11 points between us.

Yes, I saw today's Peanuts Classic! What a great comic strip.

Thanks, but walking partner into -800 wasn't bad luck. I just made a bad decision and the opponents made us pay. Even -300 would have been a bottom on the board. --Bob

That's great news! So I get to call my 1S overcall high board "brilliant" instead of "lucky."

Let's see 40-11 leaves 29. Usually reuired for game 26-27. Even if they are split someone had al least 15 points and couldn't find a bid at the 2 level. No offense but I'll go with lucky

If you don't go for at least one 5-800 against a part score every month you aren't bidding enough. That's one bottom against all the good boards you get when you outbid them or push them one more

None taken, I'm going with lucky also. All the other E-W pairs made game with overtricks, none of them bidding spades, of course.

Yep, East had 18, West had 11. I felt even more lucky to take four tricks when dummy came down. Here's how the bidding went:

East: 1D
South (me): 1S (9 points and five spades, what the heck)
West: Pass
North: Pass (2 points)
East: Pass

It took them forever to get the results posted, but they're finally up. We ended up fifth overall, and second in Flight B. It could have been a little better (if we'd beaten that contract I doubled, it would have been a top -- most pairs beat it, but no one else doubled), but I don't think we'd have finished better than about third. Still, four and a half points is nothing to sneeze at. --Bob
