This just in: You can't buy a VCR anymore. I spent a good deal of the afternoon trying.

When ghost was giving their diatribe about needing two new VCRs and assorted cables and channel changers and various WTF, I personally thought if somebody watches that many programs that they would need two dedicated VCRs capable of multiple channels without even having cable, then it was time to spring for a DVR. But it's none of my concern and I'm sure they would give 4850380233 reasons for their decisions, so whatever.

I, on the other hand, watch maybe 6 shows a week during my peak viewing season. But they are only on two nights of the week. See the problem? So, nothing a 20 buck VCR and a one dollar tape wouldn't solve. Right? Apparently not.

It's just all a big conspiracy to make me blow 2 wheels and 8 bucks a month just so I can watch both How I Met Your Mother and Dancing with the Stars. Ha!

You can still buy a VCR, but they are quickly disappearing. If you think you'll ever need one during the rest of your life, now would be a good time to buy one.

Here's one from Best Buy for $69.99. It's a VCR plus DVD player combo unit, which is probably the main way to find a VCR these days.

A reasonable assortment of VCRs (with or without DVD players) is still available for purchase over the internet, although with shipping, you probably would go well beyond your $20 price target. This also might not be of much use to ghost, who doesn't like to buy things over the internet.

They had a pile of $29 DVD players, so I was hoping for a $19 pile of VCRs. No such luck.

I had a horribly disappointing pilgrimage today in so many different ways. It made me feel dreary and cold inside. But that's a story for another post (besides, I have a chemical question for you).

That's the problem. Everybody had combo players, but nobody has a plain old unitasking VCR anymore! I already have three dvd players and a dvd recorder, so if I'm going to have to spend that much, I'd rather just put it towards the monthly DVR fee. I'm going to have to see if I can sweet talk Directv into a deal on the receiver.

I looked at all the main stores (with the exception of Amazon) before I went and innocently thought that maybe they just didn't have them on their online sites. Ha!

I might have to troll through ebay but, being a seller myself, I know how drastically postage costs have increased along with the newly doubled (again!) final value fees, so I doubt I could get a reasonable price.

The guy at Circuit City suggested Goodwill or a pawn shop, which is probably the best bet.

What I did a year ago with Dishnetwork:

I called them and told them I wanted to cancel my service (I had been a loyal customer for 5 years). I said I was thinking of switching to DirectTV or cable, they offered me free upgrades on everything to keep me! They came out and moved my dish so I would get less interference ( I was having a little problem with pixeling) they ran all new cable through the house and I was able to upgrade to the DVR, plus 3 months of free HBO etc. I LOVE my DVR!

I wish I had known you needed one. I went to my very first estate auction this weekend. I had a lot of fun. There were two VCRs that were available. After dropping the starting price to the lowest amount of $2.50 (for both!) the auctioneer finally gave up and added a box of tools to the deal. That clinched it, and the VCRs just got thrown in for free.

I've got one that still works. My mother, may she rest in peace, bought one to listen to music with and used it for years even though the technology was outdated. She didn't see any reason to change. I've got the tapes to go with it, too - mostly easy listening and country.

I just bought my fifth VCR last week for $60. It's my second VCR - DVD combo player. I will use the DVD part in the basement for my grandson to watch Diego and all his other favourites.

I tried to find a DVR but the guy at Future Shop didn't even know what a DVR was! He finally found 2 and explained in broken English I couldn't understand all about how I could put this on my hard drive and a bunch of other stuff. How can I do that when my computer is upstairs and my DVR would be downstairs in the family room?

Cable wants $25. a month for a PVR so I just decided to get the VCR til TIVO actually gets started here in Canada.

BTW, anyone know where to get a CD player? Ours is shot and you can't find one anywhere. My Son-In-Law is in the speaker business and has been asking all over North America to no avail. He goes to quite a few electronics trade shows and still can't help me.

A CD player that's standalone or one that plugs into your stereo system? You should be able to play a CD in your DVD player.

People don't realize what a great resource Craigslist.com can be. Not as good of a selection as Ebay of course, but just about anything you're seeking can be found right in your own neighborhood, and no shipping fees to boot.

VCR's, CD players, 8 track players.... I just checked, and could pick up any of those items right now, within 3 miles of my house. There are "for sale" categories for electronics, furniture, appliances, jewelry, collectibles... you name it. --It's like perusing a perpetual neighborhood estate sale, right at your fingertips with the click of a mouse. There are also "free" and "barter" sections, as well as a place to post what is "wanted."

You'll also find... Concert tix, carpools, pets, housing, jobs, cars, sporting goods, childcare, local services... the list just goes on and on.

Also Freecyle (i'm not sure if it's .com or .org)...it's basically a series of Yahoo groups set up for different regions. You join one (or more) near your house and you can give away or ask to receive just about anything - for free. The idea is to keep it out of landfills. I have given away a ton of stuff that is nice but not worth the hassle of trying to sell for a few bucks, it has been great. I have seen a few VCRs in the last few months, but if you sign up you can specifically ask for one and see if anyone has one they don't need. It's worth a shot!

Well I guess I need to get on down to the pawn shop and get me a few spares.

I think I might have an old VCR that still works. I used it for years, waiting for it to break down so I could buy a DVD/VCR combo, but I got tired of waiting and got one while Old Faithful seemed to be still going strong. If I do still have the machine and the box that goes with it (I won't know for sure until Friday), I could send it to you for free (or maybe a little help on shipping), if you were interested. Let me know.
