I wonder

#1 Post by Sir_Galahad » Fri Sep 19, 2008 1:42 pm

Does the town of Milford, CT live up to its name?

The Encyclopedia Britannica thinks it was named for Milford Haven, Wales or Milford, England. The Milford Haven, Wales seems to be more likely as many of the first settlers in this part of what is now Connecticut were Welsh.

I guess you could consider the location of Milford as a ford. The river does narrow there between its mouth on Long Island sound and "Upper Lagoon". It appears to have been named Milford before any actual mills were built there, though.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Okay, hands up if you think you know where the heck Galahad's drift is supposed to be drifting.

No idea.

Mill and ford seem to be the operative words. They do not seem especially interesting without context.

I think he wants you to drop the "ord" from the town name.

I used to live in that neck of the woods. Basically, New Haven (and its assorted compass havens) prevent Milford and Guilford from abutting each other. I will leave it as an exercise to the deranged readers to make up their own particularly filthy acronyms.

Hey Beavis! Uh, I looked up the word milf in the dictionary, and like, uh, there was a picture of your mom in there. Huh, huh, huh!

Shut up Butt-head! You don't even know how to use one of those dictionary things!

And I'd love to see Sir G go back to making dirty posts as opposed to posting all the political crap. That's the way I'll always remember him.....

If you are in NYC, and someone annoying asks you for directions to the Milford Plaza, the evil thing to do is direct them to Grand Central and get a train ticket to Milford.

I live in Stratford, the next own over is Milford. Husband1111 works there.

I knew what a MILF is and I still didn't get it.

So maybe Sir G's answer is no.

But then the mother thing might throw me off a bit. I can't think of many FILF over there either, but that would be a different town.

<LOL>

Ah, those were fun times, weren't they lb?

I just don't get that same sense that I used to have when I bantered with samcat in The Old Days.

Sometimes I wish I hadn't become so wound up in this election. But, god damn it, our country is at stake here and (please forgive my brief political rant in this otherwise clean thread) I find it so difficult to believe that so many people can't or refuse to see that and what Obama represents. It's not fear-mongering or kool-aid drinking. It's truth. It's all there in black and white if you just seek it out. [/ rant]

I believe that people have been making this statment since the first Presidential election (and I'm sure that they will making for many years to come), and still our Republic survives.
